  • Patent number: 5035107
Abstract: A rotary lawn mower having a trimming attachment for trimming around fence posts and the like is provided. The trimming attachment assembly includes an auxiliary trimming blade mounted in a housing and attached to a swing arm assembly mounted on the primary mower housing. In the forward position, the trimming attachment extends outwardly from, but slightly overlaps, the mowed path of the primary mower. The trimming blade preferably is driven by the primary mower motor. As a fence post or the like adjacent the primary mower is encountered by the trimming attachment assembly, the trimming attachment assembly is pushed rearwardly by the obstruction and swings into the mowed path of the primary mower, during which process the grass near the fence post is cut. As the fence post or other object is passed, an actuator assembly forces the trimming assembly back into its original forward auxiliary cutting position.

The housing includes a front wheel mounting member, a rear wheel mounting member, and a cutting blade mounting member. The cutting blade mounting member is offset from the front and rear wheel mounting members. A passageway extends along the upper surface of the cutting blade mounting member. The first end of the passageway is positioned adjacent the exhaust port of the gas operated engine. The second end abuts the rear wheel mounting member. The passageway directs the exhaust fumes from the gas operated engine underneath the housing thereby significantly reducing the noise of the invention. Further, harmful exhaust fumes are directed away from the operator. The cutting blade mounting member includes fixed and removable sections. The removable section can be secured to either side of the fixed section. Thus, an operator can trim from both sides of the power trimmer.

  • Patent number: 4711076
Abstract: An improved cutting blade structure and method of use is disclosed, characterized by use of a flexible, planar member formed of a plurality of interconnected elongate tubular segments which when rotated, contacts and effectively cuts vegetation. Due to its planar tubular segment construction, the cutting blade constantly exposes a multiplicity of new cutting edge surfaces during use and possesses an extremely low mass which reduces the possibility of personal injury to a user or property damage to structures located in the vicinity of use.

  • Patent number: 4706446
Abstract: A lawn mower having a housing and a cutter unit positioned below the housing. The cutter unit comprises an upper rotating cutting unit and a lower stationary cutting unit that is concentric with the upper cutting unit and which have a plurality of upper and lower blades at their borders. Each blade has a cutting surface with a near end close to the border, and a far end away from the border. The blades of the upper cutting unit extend in front of a line passing through the concentric axis and the near end, in the direction of rotation of the upper cutting unit. The upper blades rotate and slide over stationary lower blades, thereby cutting the lawn in a manner similar to a pair of scissors. The angle between the upper and lower blades is preferably 16-20 degrees.

Abstract: A carriage finding particular utility for support of a lawn trimmer is comprised of two frame members connected by a yoke. The yoke is made of two pieces which may pivot with respect to each other to allow insertion or removal of the handle of the trimmer. When it is desired to store the apparatus, the yoke may be broken into two pieces to reduce the area required for storage. The yoke is pivotally mounted to the frame members to permit angular adjustment about a horizontal axis, and various mounting holes are provided in the frame members to permit further adjustment of the yoke.

Abstract: Improvements are described for power mowers comprising a prime mover, a rotatable drive shaft driven by the prime mover and rotatable grass cutting means adapted to be driven by power from said drife shaft. The improvements involve including in the mowers (a) a centrifugal clutch interposed between the drive shaft and the cutting means, (b) apparatus enabling the prime mover to operate at a rate of speed at least high enough for the clutch to engage, and alternatively at a rate of speed low enough for the clutch to disengage, and apparatus including a pulley and at least one stationary belt frictionally engageable therewith for stopping rotation of the cutting means concurrently with the disengagement of the clutch.

  • Patent number: 4688376
Abstract: A plural-castor-mounted lightweight tubular frame has a central resilient housing-clamping mechanism adapted for holding a string trimmer having a tapered or other conventional-shape housing at a desired level for trimming weeds or grass. Mechanical advantage and threaded adjustment are provided by the clamping mechanism. The handle of the string trimmer is employed as the handle by which the castor mounted frame and the trimmer held in it are directed. Quick detach/quick attach features enable the string trimmer to be used conveniently by itself when desired. Two height-adjustment provisions can be used, a coarse adjustment of clamping-height, and a fine adjustment of threaded connection between threaded shanks of the castor and clamping nuts at the frame that also provides convenient tilt-adjustment of the string trimmer relative to the ground.

Abstract: An electric lawn mower and power cord combination in which the power cord has a central portion that is self-coiling. This central portion of the cord comprises the predominant length of the cord, and is constructed with an elastic memory, so that, when in its relaxed state, it automatically coils itself into a continuous spiralling helix that is too large to pass under the electric lawn mower. A cord grip is also disclosed that locks the cord to a stationary object to prevent the cord from inadvertently becoming disconnected during use.
