Publication number: 20010032448Abstract: A wire twisting machine and method provide a randomly varying lay to pairs of twisted wires forming a cable. A pair of wires are fed into a motor driven bow mechanism which twists the wires at a given rate of speed. The bow winding speed is sensed to provide a signal to a control system employing a computer which generates a randomly varying signal between a selected minimum and maximum range. The random signal is applied to an oscillator which provides a varying frequency signal to a power supply unit. A pulsed direct voltage signal then controls a stepping motor which applies the randomly varying lay signal to vary the speed of the capstan winding the wires with respect to the independent bow speed. This varies the length of lay of the twisted wires within controlled limits.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 23, 2001Publication date: October 25, 2001Inventor: John Doherty

Patent number: 5540041Abstract: Apparatus for stress relieving multistranded cable includes a rotatable cradle of a double twist strander which carries a plurality of guide sheaves, a dual wheel capstan, and a take-up reel and a pay-off reel arranged to substantially reduce the length of the path of travel of the advancing cable and to impart stress relieving rotation and tension to the advancing cable. After the cable has been payed off of a stationary pay-off reel, it is advanced to a pair of metering sheaves to fix the starting point of the stress relieving process. From the metering sheaves, the cable advances to the dual wheel capstan mounted for rotation with the take-up reel on the cradle of the strander.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1994Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventors: Steven R. Patent number: 4848078Abstract: A textile apparatus is disclosed wherein a cylindrical package of strand material is mounted on an elongated hollow spindle and the strand material is withdrawn from the package and through the hollow spindle for further processing. A flyer arm is mounted on an extremity of the spindle for rotation thereabout with the arm extending radially outwardly of the spindle to overlie the outer circumference of the package. An adjustable strand tensioning device is mounted on the flyer adjacent the longitudinal axis of the spindle and longitudinally spaced from the end of the spindle and within an envelope defined by the path of movement of the strand material as it is guided by the flyer arm from the package into the hollow spindle.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1988Date of Patent: July 18, 1989Inventors: Frances H. Patent number: 4603545Abstract: A yarn twisting and winding apparatus is disclosed which is adapted to produce a yarn ball, and which includes a yarn support spindle (12) and surrounding flyer (19). The flyer is rotatable about a central axis (15), and the yarn support spindle is mounted so that its axis (12') intersects the central axis. Also, the spindle (12) is rotated about the central axis (15), as well as its own axis (12') during the winding operation. A yarn delivery roll (4) is mounted coaxially about the central axis, and so that the yarn is adapted to advance to the flyer, around the yarn delivery roll, back to the flyer, and then to the yarn support spindle to form a yarn ball.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1985Date of Patent: August 5, 1986Assignee: Artec Design GmbHInventor: Georg Siebert

Patent number: 4590754Abstract: Making a cable core unit in which pairs of twisted conductors are formed upon individual twisting machines, the twisted conductor pairs then fed `in-line` to a core forming device by passing the pairs through a tension reducing means which reduces tension in each pair while allowing the lengths of the pairs to be different from pair-to-pair as they move into the core forming device. Built-in tensions and twisted core units are thus avoided. Also provided is a tension equalizing device which averages out the tensions between conductor pairs.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1983Date of Patent: May 27, 1986Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Jean Bouffard, Andre Dumoulin, Marc Seguin

Patent number: 4566264Abstract: Forming a telecommunications cable core unit in which conductor pairs change their relative positions along the core unit. The conductor pairs, as they are fed towards a core-unit forming device, are passed through individual guides which are movable independently of each other laterally of the feedpath of the conductor pairs and within certain confines. A fluid force is used to cause this guide movement. The fluid force may be the force created by an air flow, in which case the guides are buoyant.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1984Date of Patent: January 28, 1986Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventor: John N. Patent number: 4554782Abstract: Changing relative positions of conductor pairs along a telecommunications cable core by passing the pairs, as they approach a core unit forming means, through guides which are held in relative positions in a guide channel. The channel extends in a plurality of directions and has inner and outer channel portions which are preferably arcuate and lie upon arcs of circles. The guides are moved along the channel and from channel portion to channel portion, movement being alternately in each direction. This movement changes the positional relationship of guides in one channel portion to those in the other.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1984Date of Patent: November 26, 1985Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventor: John N. Patent number: 4107912Abstract: An improved capstan assembly for a rope making machine in which separate strands of rope are twisted together and drawn through a forming die by the capstan and then directed onto a take-up spool. The capstan assembly includes a single capstan having a smooth cylindrical peripheral wall and a hollow central shaft through which the advancing rope strand is directed. A separating comb is mounted adjacent the peripheral wall of the capstan such that adjacent windings of the advancing rope strand around the single capstan are engaged and kept separate by the comb teeth and thereby are prevented from overlapping and binding.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1977Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Inventors: William W. Patent number: 4085574Abstract: Disclosed is a spooling apparatus that can be threaded on the fly to anchor, controllably twist and wind filament onto a receiving spool. A receiving spool is non-rotatably mounted on a spool shaft for axial reciprocation. A lead-in pulley, whose rotational axis is perpendicular to the receiving spool axis, is spaced axially outboard with respect to the receiving spool. A flier is mounted to rotate concentrically about the receiving spool and presents a pick-up head adapted to engage the feed run of the filament as it passes between the lead-in pulley and an orienting pulley located in proximity to the inboard end of the receiving spool. The orienting pulley is canted such that the tailing run of the filament cannot be engaged by the pick-up head as it rotates with the flier although the canting of the orienting pulley disposes the feed run such that it will be engaged by the rotating pick-up head when the spool reaches a predetermined position along its range of axial reciprocation.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1976Date of Patent: April 25, 1978Assignee: Shakespeare CompanyInventors: Philippe Hardy-The McLain, Bob Gene Shepherd
