  • Patent number: 8336303
Abstract: A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine capable of decreasing the pressure or temperature of exhaust gas. The internal combustion engine includes at least two cylinders and an exhaust path. The exhaust path includes a convergent-divergent nozzle and an exhaust merging section provided upstream with respect to an upstream end of the divergent section arranged to connect only exhaust ports of combustion chambers for which the opening periods do not overlap. A shock wave propagating in a merging upstream section is branched at a connection section, and the branched shock wave is reflected by an exhaust valve of cylinder and collides against the exhaust gas. In accompaniment with the passage of the exhaust gas having the pressure increased by the shock wave through the convergent-divergent nozzle, a new shock wave propagating in a downstream direction in the exhaust path is generated and also an expansion wave propagating in an upstream direction in the exhaust path is generated.

Abstract: A V-type engine is disposed in an engine room of a vehicle so that each cylinder bank of the V-type engine extends substantially in a vehicle length direction. Exhaust manifolds are attached to both side of the V-type engine in a vehicle width direction, respectively. Catalytic converters are attached to both gathering portions of the exhaust manifolds, respectively, in a manner that an axial line of each of the catalytic converters extends substantially in a vehicle height direction. An auxiliary component is disposed above one of the catalytic converters in the engine room. An oil pan is attached to a lower portion of the V-type engine. The one of the catalytic converters is located lateral to the oil pan. A center line of lower portion of the oil pan is shifted with respect to a center line of the vehicle in the vehicle width direction so that the lower portion of the oil pan is away from the one of the catalytic converters.

The engine has two groups of cylinders: inside cylinders and outside cylinders. Each cylinder has at least one exhaust port, each leading to an individual duct. Individual ducts of outside cylinders converge to form an outside combined duct. In a four-cylinder, individual ducts of inside cylinders converge to form an inside combined duct with the inside combined duct remaining separated from the outside combined duct by the cooling jacket. The inside combined duct is farther away from the mounting surface of the cylinder head to the cylinder block than the outside combined duct. The cooling jacket includes: upper, middle, and lower cooling jackets and connectors between the upper and lower cooling jackets.
