Abstract: An autoinjector includes front and rear separable housing parts 10, 12. These are connected by a rotary coupling action such as by bayonet coupling and the relative rotation action turns a needle shield 20 from a locked position in which it is both locked against longitudinal movement and acts as a shutter obscuring the contents of the syringe to an open position where the contents of the syringe are visible and the shield portion is freed for longitudinal movement. Connecting and securing the rear portion 12 on the front portion 11 therefore unlocks the needle shield 20 for operation. On completion of an injection, uncoupling of the front and rear portions returns the needle shield 20 to its locked position so the front portion may be disposed of safely.

Abstract: A device for covering and protecting the hollow needle of a syringe after the syringe is used to inject a medicament into a patient includes a cylindrical adapter formed with a coupling. A syringe body formed with a medicament chamber is attached to the coupling. The hollow needle is also attached to the coupling in fluid communication with the medicament chamber. The adapter is formed with a plug that extends from the adapter. The adapter is disposed within a cylindrical barrel piece to allow axial movement between the adapter and barrel piece. A slot is formed in the barrel piece for engagement with the adapter plug. The specially designed slot regulates the distance the needle tip extends from the nose of the barrel piece during a sequence of steps that include filling the syringe with fluid medicament from a medicament vial and then injecting a patient with the medicament.

  • Patent number: 5830193
Abstract: A syringe in which one or more injectable materials are filled, comprises a cylinder or barrel in which a front partition stopper, which can be fixed or movable depending on the embodiment, and one or more intermediate partition stoppers are slidably disposed. In the simplest arrangement, a single intermediate partition stopper is disposed between the front partition stopper and a rear piston, to define first and second chambers within the cylinder in which first and second injectable materials can be respectively filled. An outer periphery of the intermediate partition stopper is provided with a plurality of circular lips between which at least one peripheral groove is defined. One of the first and second chambers is communicated with peripheral groove or grooves of the intermediate partition stopper by small passages to allow the first medicine, which is in liquid form, to enter and fill the groove or grooves and exclude air and bacteria therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5573514
Abstract: This invention relates to a holder for use in combination with a pre-filled cartridge-needle unit, the holder comprising a hollow body sized for housing the cartridge-needle unit therein, and means for permitting the body to move axially relative to the cartridge-needle unit. In one preferred embodiment, the distal end of the body is elliptical in cross section and the proximal end of the body is circular in cross section. In another preferred embodiment, the body comprises a pair of cam slots at the distal end and a pair or retaining slots at the proximal end, the slots being sized to accept a circumferential ring on the cartridge-needle unit and positioned to hold the cartridge-needle units in use and safe positions. The holder is easier to use and manufacture and reduces the susceptibility of health care workers to accidental needle strikes.

  • Patent number: 5505694
Abstract: The sight of a large I.V. needle makes one shiver with fright due to one's association of an I.V. needle with pain. An apparatus and method of anesthetizing the intended site for I.V. needle insertion is provided to reduce or eliminate the pain. In addition, apparatus and method may be used for diagnostic testing purposes to reduce the amount of pain associated with this procedure. The apparatus (10) comprises a storage chamber (12) containing an anesthetizing agent (22) and coupled to a seat member (14). The seat member (14) further holds a needle (16) in place and pierces the storage chamber (12). Alternate embodiments of the apparatus (10) include a seat member (46, 56) which allows the needle (52, 68) to penetrate the storage chamber (40, 62) just prior to use. The apparatus pierces the skin, injects the anesthetizing agent and induces a skin wheal at the intended I.V. site.

  • Patent number: 5250037
Abstract: A hypodermic syringe has a syringe barrel with a distal end and a passage therethrough communicating with a fluid-receiving chamber in the syringe barrel. A barrier extends across the passage to isolate the fluid in the chamber. A needle cannula is mounted to a needle hub slidingly engaged at the distal end of the syringe barrel. The needle cannula includes a proximally facing point for piercing the barrier in the passage to the chamber of the syringe barrel. A needle shield is mounted to the distal end of the syringe barrel, and cam means are provided for cam-guided rotational movement between the needle shield and the syringe barrel. The cam shape causes the needle shield and the needle cannula to move proximally for initially piercing the barrier and then to move distally to enable separation of the needle shield.
