Patent number: 8433511Abstract: A rush hour modeling system that is configured for modifying existing travel time/distance data to reflect special traffic conditions, such as rush hour traffic conditions. The system is configured to receive information defining one or more time windows, geographic areas, and road segments in which special traffic conditions occur. The system is also configured to receive travel rules that reflect the special traffic conditions. The travel rules are used to modify a travel time/distance matrix to reflect the effect of the special traffic conditions on “normal” travel times and distances. Existing routing and scheduling systems can then use the modified travel matrix to plan and schedule routes for delivery vehicles more accurately. Additionally, the modified travel matrix can be used to model traffic conditions through a particular geographic area or on a particular road segment.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2008Date of Patent: April 30, 2013Assignee: United Parcel Service of AmericaInventors: Charles Heaps, Clifton Kraisser, Ralph Clementi, Thomas Mudd, Stephen Simon, McClellan Francis

Patent number: 8396615Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for changing the path followed by an aircraft, the aircraft initially following a predefined path on the basis of a sequence of waypoints, the method allowing a subsequent return of the aircraft to the predefined path in the same direction or in the reverse direction. The method allows a possible return of the aircraft to the predefined path in the same direction such that the waypoints of the predefined path are projected onto a new path according to a projection function ensuring that the order of the sequence of the projected image points complies with the order of the sequence of the original waypoints. The projection of a waypoint already reached by the aircraft also is considered as having been reached. The projections of the waypoints on the new path are considered reached by the aircraft progressively as the latter progresses along the new path.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2007Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: ThalesInventors: Christophe Caillaud, Guy Deker

Patent number: 8396658Abstract: The accuracy of a reverse geocode for a GPS fix in a mobile phone navigation device is improved significantly by considering together the user's last known location on an original route, the elapsed time between the last known location on the original route and the latest GPS fix, and the likelihood that the user could have traveled from the last known location on the original route to one of numerous candidate locations (generated from the reverse geocode) in the elapsed time. The navigation server relies only on a GPS fix, timestamps, and a back-end routing database to provide improved or superior accuracy of reverse geocoding a GPS fix (selection of a point on a road) when a relevant user has deviated from the intended route. Publication number: 20130006519Abstract: The described method and system provide for GPS navigation utilizing an EHPE (estimated horizontal positioning error) timer for reducing route calculation failures. By utilizing an EHPE timer, a GPS unit may continue to check for GPS signal until the EHPE timer expires before reporting route calculation failure to the user. Thus, in situations where GPS signal is only temporarily lost and current location information is only temporarily degraded, user route requests will not necessarily result in route calculation failure. In preferred implementations, the system and method are implemented within the context of a telematics unit in a vehicle or in the context of a call center.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2011Publication date: January 3, 2013Inventors: James Doherty, Shpetim S. Publication number: 20120310523Abstract: A point-to-point shortest path technique supports real-time queries and fast metric update or replacement (metric customization). Arbitrary metrics (cost functions) are supported without significant degradation in performance. Determining a shortest path between two locations uses three stages: a preprocessing stage, a metric customization stage, and a query stage. Preprocessing is based on a graph structure only, while metric customization augments preprocessing results taking edge costs into account. The preprocessing partitions the graph into loosely connected components of bounded size and creates an overlay graph by replacing each component with a “clique” connecting its boundary vertices. Clique edge lengths are computed during the customization phase. The customization phase can be repeated for various different metrics, and produces a small amount of data for each. The query phase is run using the metric-independent data together with the relevant metric-specific data.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2011Publication date: December 6, 2012Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Daniel Delling, Renato F.
