  • Patent number: 4386511
Abstract: In a method and a system for controlling a plate width in a hot rolling mill having a front stage including a horizontal roll stand; and a rear stage including a vertical roll stand and a horizontal roll stand, the thickness of a thickened portion of the plate thickened as a result of rolling by the vertical roll stand of the rear stage and the plate thickness at the entrance of the vertical roll stand of the rear stage are determined; the ratio of the thickness of the thickened portion to the plate thickness at the entrance of the rear stage is calculated; the plate width at the exit of the vertical roll stand is determined; the plate width at the exit of the horizontal roll stand of the rear stage is calculated taking account of extension of the plate width as a result of reduction of the thickened portion; and the roll gap of the vertical roll stand of the rear stage is controlled in such a manner as to bring the plate width at the exit of the horizontal roll stand of the rear stage closer to a target valu

  • Patent number: 4272977
Abstract: A container body is simultaneously necked-in and flanged at the marginal edge adjacent to an open end by a tool assembly having first and second freewheeling rollers supporting the inside of the body while a die ring moves eccentrically between the rollers. An encapsulating annular nest ring circumferentially surrounds the open end of the body on the second roller to provide metal control, and the first roller innermost in the body is tapered at its end adjacent the second roller to define, in cooperation with a circumferential container body holder ring on the outside body surface, a volume for receiving metal reverse-flowing from the necked-in portion to prevent the metal from bulging. Compressive forming forces are minimized by the use of springs biasing the two rollers together that are characterized by spring force that increases with increased spring compression at less than a linear rate.

  • Patent number: 4226107
Abstract: A device for edging points of ball point pens wherein three equiangularly spaced rollers run on a conical surface. The point to be worked is moved into a working zone defined by regions of the three rollers in a direction along the axis of the conical surface in a direction from the apex of the conical surface towards the wider end of the conical surface. The rollers either react against a rotatable disc or a fixed shaft, in which latter case the conical surface is rotatable.

  • Patent number: 4143535
Abstract: An apparatus for performing an operation upon the end of a cylindrical workpiece consists of one or more tools mounted by a frame for rotation about a mounting axis along which the workpiece is moved. Each tool is mounted for longitudinal movement along a respective tool axis inclined inwardly toward the mounting axis in the engaging direction of movement of the workpiece and is engaged by the workpiece and pushed by it along the inclined axis. The longitudinal movement of the tool is thereby accompanied automatically by movement radially inward toward the mounting axis to perform the desired operation. Preferably a plurality of tools are provided each spring urged for movement in the direction opposite to that of the workpiece, and each freely rotatable about their tools axes, so that they gyrate about the workpiece. The tools can each be provided with a radial flange that is engaged by the workpiece in its movement to move the tool.

  • Patent number: 4103527
Abstract: An apparatus is described for forming a circumferential annular groove into a round workpiece. The workpiece may comprise two or more cylindrical members to be joined together in an overlapping relation by means of a rolled annular crimp. The apparatus or machine includes a portable main body part having an annular platform rotatable within the main body part about a centerline axis. The annular platform inner circumference defines a co-axial bore into which a workpiece may be received. A ball bearing is introduced part-way into the bore in the radial direction to contact the workpiece whereby a circumferential groove may be formed into the workpiece. The depth of the groove may be automatically controlled and the apparatus itself is circumferentially mounted about the workpiece to facilitate the application of the apparatus to the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4096722
Abstract: A roll-type thread cutting die capable of cutting threads in shafts of varying diameters is disclosed. A plurality of threaded rollers are rotatably mounted on the smooth end portion of a plurality of bolts, each bolt having an intermediate main body portion, a smooth end portion and a grooved end portion. The main body portion of each of the plurality of bolts is supported by a different circumferentially spaced bore in a support plate having an axial bore capable of accommodating a shank on which threads are to be cut. Each of the plurality of circumferentially spaced bores is positioned a distance from the axial bore sufficient to enable the threads of its associated roller to contact the shank on which the threads are to be cut. A positioning plate having a plurality of grooved bores adapted to engage the grooved end portions of the bolts is positioned adjacent to the support plate and holds the bolts in a preselected angular orientation.

  • Patent number: 4083215
Abstract: The method disclosed herein briefly includes the steps of (1) forming a pair of nestled cup-like pulley hubs having radially extending flanges in side-by-side relationship and (2) rotating the nestled hubs about a rotating axis while simultaneously urging a tapered projection on the inner surface of a rotatable, annular forming tool between the side-by-side flanges to spread the flanges and form a V groove with only minor relative rotary motion between the flanges and forming tool in their areas of contact. By having the working portion of the forming tool formed on the inner portion of a rotatable, annular tool, relative rotary movement between the flanges and tool and hence galling of the flanges is kept at a minimum. The tool disclosed herein is an annular groove forming tool having the working portion thereof formed on the inner surface of the tool, the tool including the means for mounting on the same on a spinning lathe so that the tool can be used while the pulley is rotated on the lathe spindle.

  • Patent number: 4033163
Abstract: The method and tool of this invention functions to reduce the ends of tubular material, such as oil or gas well drill pipe, particularly pipe having a flared end. The tool consists of a mandrel sleeve having an inner tapered surface, a series of conical rollers mounted in a roller cage within the mandrel so the rollers bear against the tapered surface. With the pipe inserted between the rollers and with relative rotational and axial movement between the pipe and the mandrel, the rollers will engage the surface of the pipe applying a swaging force to the pipe which is increased by the decreasing diameter caused by axial movement of the pipe and rollers along the tapered surface.

  • Patent number: 3991599
Abstract: Three cylindrical rollers are rotatably mounted equidistant from the center of a hollow tool head on radii spaced 120.degree. apart. Each roller has a thin flange; the three flanges lie in a single plane to form an internal circumferential rib in a rotating tubular workpiece. The tool head has two complementary parts with two rollers in one part of the head and one roller in the other part; the two parts are joined by a hinge. A second hinge, located so the rollers are between the two hinges, connects one of the parts to a tool bar mounted in a lathe tool holder. The axes of rotation of both hinges and all three rollers are parallel. A hole exposing equal portions of the three roller flanges is located in the center of the tool head. The two hinges permit the tool head to be opened and rotated slightly downward, taking the roller flanges out of the path of the workpiece which is supported on both ends and rotated by the lathe.

Abstract: A thread-rolling head comprises three crank-like support pieces, each bearing a thread roller, protruding from a support member in which they are mounted. A control member is held unrotatably on the support member while a bearing member held in front of the support member is rotatable and stop means are operative between the bearing and the support member to transmit to the latter a torque received from the workpiece through the thread rollers; the stop means is rendered inoperative when the bearing means is caused by the workpiece to move forwardly, whereby the torque will aid a spring in rotating the bearing member to pivot the support pieces in order to remove the thread rollers from the workpiece.
