  • Patent number: 5732582
Abstract: Apparatus and method is disclosed for forming a variety of shapes and sizes of shaped structural members. The apparatus and method includes a first portion on a traveling plate having successive sets of opposed upper and lower roller sections arranged so that the roller sections of one side are adjustable to the roller sections of the other side to partially form the sheet member and cut the member to a selected length. A second portion has successive sets of upper and lower rollers and also has movable roller sections along one side for adjustability. Adjustable entry guides in the front portion establish the lip dimension. The front portion is reoriented relative to the rear portion to establish flange height and the rear portion position determines the web width. Separate drive motors are provided for the first and second portions that are synchronized in operation by using hydraulic motors and hydraulic controls.

  • Patent number: 5664451
Abstract: A machine for forming a metal roof panel of indeterminate length from a uniform width supply strip of sheet metal having a pair of parallel straight longitudinal edges. The machine has a series of spaced forming stations each having upper and lower shaping rollers between which the sheet metal strip is passed so as to impart a desired shape to the sheet metal strip which is uniform the length of sheet metal strip after it exits the apparatus. A stamping station located in the path of the sheet metal strip before the series of spaced forming stations is effective to form linear impressions in the sheet metal strip. The linear impressions are transverse to the longitudinal edges of the sheet metal strip, with each such impression having its lateral extent limited such that the succeeding series of shaping rollers do not impinge thereon.

  • Patent number: 4969346
Abstract: A cold-forming method is disclosed for thinning localized, longitudinally extending portions of sheet metal by lateral shear deformation without any substantial longitudinal deformation. With such method, it is possible to produce elongated members which are thinned in zones of low stress and are thicker in zones of higher stress so as to provide high metal use efficiency. The method is performed by an apparatus including a rotating mandrel providing opposed conical surfaces and pressure rolls operable to apply forces substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the mandrel to cause a portion of the sheet metal to yield in shear to reduce the thickness of longitudinally extending portions of the sheet metal. The forces are applied in a plane normal to the length of the strip in order to avoid longitudinal elongation.

  • Patent number: 4947671
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for manufacturing conical poles or conical pole members by roll forming sheet metal wherein said device (1) includes a conveyor path (5) along which sheet metal is transported, and a plurality of groups (10) of forming rolls (11, 12) positioned in succession along the conveyor path (5). In order to facilitate the roll forming and eliminate the risk of bending the sheet metal during the roll forming, the forming rolls (11, 12) in at least one of the groups (10) thereof are mounted on frame members (13) which are pivotable about vertical axes (26) such that the forming rolls (11, 12) can be set to run at angles (.alpha. or .beta.) relative to the center line (6) of the conveyor path (5) necessary to achieve a desired conical form of the finished pole or pole member or portions thereof.

Each of the shaping stations extends in a generally transverse direction relative to the longitudinal direction and includes an upper row of forming rolls and a lower row of forming rolls which are disposed in spaced relationship along the transverse direction for respectively bending the plate advancing therebetween to form the profile. Some of the shaping stations include centrally located forming rolls being longitudinally displaced forwardly of the other of forming rolls in the upper and lower rows for initially bending the plate by these centrally located forming rolls. Additonally, the forming rolls respectively combine with corresponding other forming rolls to form generally converging longitudinal rows of the forming rolls.

  • Patent number: 4899566
Abstract: A roll forming apparatus disclosed has a series of roll forming stations with a first group of stations having rollers that are adjustable to different width settings using the same rollers to form more than one width of ogee type gutter. A cutter uses interchangeable cutting blades and die plates for shearing different gutter sizes to selected lengths. The cutter uses a rotary drive member to move the blade in a path having a relatively short stroke that performs a scissor-like cutting action to successively cut the walls of the formed gutters for each revolution of the rotary drive member. A crank member for manually moving the cutter blade is collapsible and the crank handle is demountable for transport purposes.
