Abstract: An assembly for maintaining alignment of a metal strip between successive roll forming means in an apparatus for forming a metal tube is disclosed. The apparatus includes a first set of roll forming means, which form the flat strip of metal into a generally U-shaped cross-sectional configuration, and a second set of roll forming means which form the U-shaped strip into a generally annular cross-sectional configuration. The assembly includes a pair of cylindrical hold down rolls which engage the guide respective marginal edge portions of the U-shaped strip into the second set of roll forming means. The cylindrical hold down rolls are rotatably supported by appropriate shaft means. The end portions of each of the shaft means are supported by vertically adjustable bearing means for adjusting the angular disposition of the shaft and the associated cylindrical hold down roll with respect to the marginal edge portions of the formed strip of metal.

  • Patent number: 4142393
Abstract: A machine for shaping elongate strips, especially of metal, into a variety of profiles comprises a cascade of working stations in which the strips are subjected to progressive deformation between rollers, some or all of which may be driven to advance the strips along their transport path through the several stations. Each working station has an annular or star-shaped carrier, rotatable on a support about a horizontal axis, with a plurality of peripherally spaced roller mountings adapted to hold a pair of coacting rollers, the various roller pairs on each carrier being differently shaped to produce a selected profile upon being brought into an operating position -- e.g. horizontal on a level with the axis -- by rotation of the carrier. The operatively positioned roller pair can be coupled with a drive mechanism, individual to the respective station or common to all working stations, for positive rotation thereby.

  • Patent number: 4085490
Abstract: A rolled steel oil control piston ring for internal combustion engines is of generally U-shaped cross section with a pair of opposed rigid sidewalls projecting inwardly of the ring from a central peripheral wall thereof. A pair of flat-faced solid scraper rims formed by closed pleats rolled from the peripheral wall extend outwardly of the ring. The ring is made by rolling flat strip steel stock through a series of profiled rollers by guiding the edges of the stock without deforming the same, while taking up dimensional variations of the stock by displacement of the central portion of the strip. Pleats are formed in the central portion by the profiled rollers and the pleats are closed on themselves to provide the solid scraper rims. An extrusion-like profile-reducing rolling step provides dimensional accuracy to the finished strip which is then punched to provide the vent openings in the peripheral wall, and coiled and cut to form individual piston rings.

  • Patent number: 4045989
Abstract: An apparatus for bending sheet metal wherein a plurality of forming rolls are utilized. The rolls are situated at succeeding stations, and a first bending station includes a roll having forming protrusions in spaced apart relationship on the roll surface. The roll also defines drive elements which are engageable by the sheet so that movement of the sheet against a roll drive element operates to drive the roll and to thus move a forming protrusion into contact with the sheet for bending the sheet. Shift means are associated with this roll for locating the drive elements and protrusions in different positions to thereby control the particular drive element engaged by the sheet whereby the particular forming protrusion which performs the bending function can be pre-selected.

  • Patent number: 4020666
Abstract: A mobile roll forming machine for the production of embossed metal siding at a siding installation site with the machine including a pair of adjustably mounted embossing rolls. A guide bar serves to divert the continuous sheet stock away from the embossing rolls to enable the optional production of unembossed or plain siding. A forming station removes sheet imperfections by imparting a transversely extending bowed configuration to the metal after passage of same past the embossing rolls. Adjustment means are operable to open or close the embossing rolls to vary the embossing action which may vary across a section of sheet stock for the purpose of contracting the metal to remedy linear curvature inherent in the rolled sheet stock. The run of sheet stock is reversed subsequent to embossing and passage past the first forming station for travel thereafter through the remaining roll sets of the machine which form marginal areas of the stock into siding configuration.

  • Patent number: 4006617
Abstract: A plurality of forming stations, each individually numerically controlled to sequentially roll form a blank into a tapered structural member, is disclosed. Each forming station includes upper and lower assemblies of forming rolls mounted on a pair of adjacent shafts so as to generally define an orifice through which the blank passes as it is roll formed. One of the shafts is continuously position adjustable, as are selected forming rolls of the forming roll assemblies. Thus, both the size and shape of the orifice are continuously adjustable. Position sensors continuously sense the positions of the position controllable shaft and forming rolls of each station and generate feedback signals related thereto. The feedback signals are continuously compared with numerical control signals received by a controller. The results of the comparisons produce error signals that are used to continuously control the position of the position controllable shafts and forming rolls.

Abstract: This specification discloses a method of and apparatus for forming concrete reinforcing elements having enlarged ends and also discloses a reinforced composite incorporating such elements. In one embodiment the enlarged ends are formed by folding the edges of a strip of sheet metal onto itself while in another form the enlarged ends are formed by edge rolling a strip. In both cases the reinforcing element is formed by transversely shearing the strip after its edge has been modified. The reinforcing elements as described above are shown to have a greater pull-out resistance than plain elements.
