Abstract: According to the method for characterizing fancy yarn, at least one characteristic of the fancy yarn is scanned along the longitudinal direction of the fancy yarn. Values of the scanning are evaluated and the results of the evaluation are outputted. The results of the evaluation are the fancy yarn parameters such as base yarn mass, base yarn diameter, slub distance, mass increase of a slub, slub diameter increase, slub diameter, slub length and/or slub total mass. On evaluation, a measurement curve is produced from the values of the scanning, and an area (A(x)) between the measurement curve and a previously determined base yarn mass is computed. A permanent increase in the course of the area (A(x)) is used as a criterion for the presence of a slub. Slubs may be differentiated from yarn imperfections in a reliable manner by way of the area (A(x)).

  • Patent number: 6595047
Abstract: An instrument is provided with several sensing elements to enable several parameters of a processed yarn to be measured or determined. In order to minimize the total sensing element/guide contact with the yarn within the complete process threadline, the yarn is guided through the instrument by contact only with the inlet and outlet guiding elements of the instrument and contact operative sensing elements. One particular instrument consists, in succession, of an interlace sensing device, a tension sensing device and an oil content sensing device. The electrical resistance of the yarn is measured between two pins of the oil content sensing device and in this case, the first pin is also a tension sensing pin of the instrument, and the second pin of the oil content sensing device is also the outlet guide of the instrument.

  • Patent number: 6561019
Abstract: In a fiber splicing device, an adjustment apparatus for moving a first fiber-section perpendicular to its end face is designed such that it is composed of at least one piezo-actuator and a drive. After the splicing of the two fiber ends, the piezo-actuator is charged to a preset electrical voltage and the electrical voltage at the piezo-actuator is subsequently measured while the first carriage is moved away perpendicular to the fiber end face and is compared to the preset values. As a result thereof, the tensile stress acting on the fiber can be identified dependent on the movement of the first carriage, so that the drive can be arrested after a preset tensile testing stress has been reached.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process and a device for monitoring the quality of a strip (37, 44, 50) made of textile fibres which is moved in its longitudinal direction. In order to create a device and a process which allow flaws in a strip to be dealt with in a targeted manner and which facilitate the production of a strip which is as free as possible of variations in the cross-section or mass, variations in the mass of the strip are to be continuously detected and converted into an electrical signal. This signal should also be compared with a plurality of predetermined limiting values, limiting values for variations transverse to the longitudinal direction being provided and limiting values for variations in the longitudinal direction of the strip being provided.

  • Patent number: 6550323
Abstract: An apparatus for testing the fatigue of a sample of cord or filament (12) by bending it over a fixed surface (19). The apparatus comprises a tensioner (14), a fixed bending surface (19) and a driving mechanism (24), whereby the driving mechanism (24) causes a non-twisting bending of cord or filament (12) over bending surface (19) while tensioner (14) maintains a constant tension on cord or filament (12). In a method of the invention, a cord or filament (12) is attached to a tensioner (14), the cord or filament (12) is mounted on fixed bending surface (19) and attached to non-stationary roller (20), and driving mechanism (24) is activated to cause a back and forth movement of roller (20), thereby causing filament or cord (12) to bend back and forth over fixed bending surface (19) until it breaks.

The housing surface is covered by a metallic coating such that the electronic components are surrounded by the coating (21). At least a portion of the surface inside the measuring gap (16) is free of the coating (21). The metallic coating is connected with a heat conductor to remove heat via the metallic coating (21). Undesirable effects on the measurement results can be substantially reduced, and the quality of the measurement results can be increased.

  • Patent number: 6536643
Abstract: A yarn breakage position detecting device and method of detecting a yarn breakage position involves a running yarn tension detector arranged at a reference position and that outputs a tension signal by which occurrence of yarn breakage is detected, and passage of the end of a broken yarn through the reference position is then calculated based on the time period from occurrence of yarn breakage to passage of the broken yarn end through the reference position. The yarn breakage time is stored as a time at which the tension signal becomes a peak value and/or a time at which the tension signal begins to decrease below a steady state tension value. The time when the yarn passes through the reference position is stored as a time at which the tension signal becomes lower than a lower limit value and/or a time at which natural oscillation begins.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for assessing the effect of yarn defects on textile fabrics, which are to be produced from a given yarn, by simulating an image of the fabric. So that assessment of simulated textile fabrics may be carried out with greater reliability and more easily, a first image (51) of the fabric is generated by simulation based on parameters or measured signals of the given yarn. A second image (52) of the fabric is generated by simulation based on parameters of a reference yarn and finally the first image is compared with the second image.

In use drawn fiber is guided about the first bobbin to the second bobbin and the bobbins are rotated to wind the fiber about the first bobbin and onto the second bobbin during initial drawing of the fiber. Subsequently the fiber between the bobbins is cut and the drawn fiber is wound onto the first bobbin.

  • Patent number: 6449008
Abstract: Interlaced or twisted yarn is passed between an optical transmitter and receiver to produce an original signal which varies in response to the changes in dimension of the yarn. Such original signal is compared using cross-correlation with an expected signal as produced by an ideally processed yarn to produce a processed signal indicating by its value the degree of matching of the original signal with the expected signal. The amplitude of the processed signal is noted relative to a predetermined threshold value representing an acceptably processed yarn. The expected signal is devised by performing a frequency analysis on the original signal to establish a peak frequency which is used to determine the distance between nodes in an ideally processed yarn.

In order that further aspects of the quality of a yarn may be taken into consideration and explained by measured values so that the quality of a yarn is as a whole substantially detectable, measured values relating on the one hand to the yarn exposed to friction and on the other hand to the yarn not exposed to friction are to be derived from the yarn. Both measured values are used to form a further measured value which represents a further qualitative feature.
