  • Patent number: 6450104
Abstract: A robotic apparatus adapted for locomotion in an enclosed space such as a pipe includes a combination of articulated gripping and locomotive modules. Each gripping module includes an actuator mechanically linked to gripping members such that axial forces produced by the actuator are translated to radial forces in the gripping members, whereby the gripping members are caused to alternately hold and release the engagement of the robotic apparatus with surfaces of the enclosed space. Each locomotive module includes one or more actuators adapted to alternatively expand and contract the length of the locomotive module. The sequence of operations of the gripping and locomotive modules can be controlled such that the robotic apparatus can crawl through the enclosed space in an inchworm-like fashion and is capable of navigating turns and traversing inclines.

  • Patent number: 6327925
Abstract: A linear drive unit has a threaded rod, and in combing engagement with same a threaded nut (2), from the outer circumference of which a number of equally spaced cogs (3) project in a radial direction. Furthermore, connecting links (4, 5), which extend parallel to the axis of the threaded rod inside a housing, are driven via hydraulically or pneumatically actuated pistons, causing the connecting links (4, 5) to move in an axial direction. During this oscillating movement the connecting links act upon cogs (3) that project from the threaded nut (2). The force exerted via the cogs (3) located on the outer circumference of the threaded nut (2) causes the threaded nut (2) to be put into an incremental rotation, which, in turn, causes an incremental linear shifting of the threaded rod (1).

  • Patent number: 6328068
Abstract: A push-pull coupling for coupling a valve spool to a coaxial cable includes a lost-motion connection which operatively disconnects the coaxial cable from the valve spool when in a first mode and positively connects the coaxial cable to the valve spool when in a second mode. Switching from the first mode to the second mode is accomplished by energizing an electromagnetic actuator within the coupling which locks components to one another to transmit push and pull motion. When the actuator is deenergized, the components move relative to one another, disconnecting the coaxial cable from the valve spool. The push-pull coupling is used in hydraulic machines to prevent operation of hydraulic cylinders when a driver is not seated on the machine so as to close a seat operated switch which energizes the electromagnetic actuator.

Abstract: An actuator and first to fourth links constitute a first displacement magnifying mechanism. An input shaft which is fixed in a basal end of the first and second links, a support shaft which is fixed in a basal end of the third and fourth links, and a displacement magnifying lever constitute a second displacement magnifying mechanism. In the displacement magnifying lever, an intermediate portion is angularly displaceably coupled to a tip end of the support shaft, a tip end of the input shaft is angularly displaceably coupled to one end, and an output rod is angularly displaceably coupled to another end. The expansion and contraction of the actuator are magnified by the first and second displacement magnifying mechanisms so as to drive a flap angularly via output rod. According to this configuration, the displacement of the actuator can be largely magnified so that the flap can be sufficiently angularly displaced in the vertical direction and in a reciprocal manner.

Abstract: In a pallet transfer apparatus, a base is reciprocably supported in a frame so that a hydraulic cylinder provided in the frame can drive the base. A pair of large-diameter sprockets and a pair of small-diameter sprockets are disposed on the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the frame, with a first and second endless roller chains fitted over the pairs of sprockets. The first endless roller chain includes a securing member which fixes the chain to the frame. The second endless roller chain has engaging member projected upward therefrom. In addition, a slider having a block in the intermediate part thereof is slidably mounted on a rail above the base. The engaging member engages the block. Moreover, the slider is provided with a catch for disconnectably engaging a hook of pallet P. Abstract: A mechanical flexure with two legs in a symmetrical structure that provides straight line motion when a force is applied to one leg end, along an axis through both leg ends. Such a force translates leg ends solely along said axis in a straight line, without deviation in an orthogonal axis. Components attached to flexure leg ends will thus travel in a straight line in a single axis over a useful range. The flexure could also provide rotational translation over small angular ranges when used with appropriate hardware configurations. The flexure is capable of integral manufacture with other components and simultaneously provides alignment and translation functions.

  • Patent number: 5727757
Abstract: The present invention provides a slotted cam control system for controlling pitch angles of fan blades of a relatively low-pressure-ratio fan within a fuselage of a helicopter. The stream of air generated by the fan is directed into the tailboom of the helicopter, and is selectively discharged through the circulation control tailboom and left and right openings of a direct jet thruster. A force-receiving arm of a slotted cam control system receives left and right forces from corresponding left and right foot rudder pedals. An end of the force-receiving arm fits into a V-shaped cam. When the pilot depressed a left foot rudder pedal and releases a right foot rudder pedal, for example, the end of the force receiving-arm is first moved along a first predetermined distance of the V-shaped cam in order to decrease the pitch angles of the fan blades while the opening of the direct jet thruster corresponding to the released foot rudder pedal is closed.

  • Patent number: 5711496
Abstract: A short take off and landing (STOL) aircraft is optimized for STOL performance and flight at minimum airspeed. The aircraft includes leading edge wing slats that are extended and retracted under the direct manual control of the pilot. The aircraft further includes an aileron/flap mixing mechanism that automatically droops the ailerons when the flaps are lowered. A flap bellcrank, which pivots to lower the flaps, carries a pair of pulleys. Aileron control cables, that actuate an aileron bellcrank to raise and lower an aileron, are threaded around and between the two pulleys. When the flap bellcrank pivots to lower the flap, the pulleys vary the positions of the aileron control cables relative to each other to pivot the aileron bellcrank and thereby lower the aileron. The aileron control cables remain independently movable to maintain pilot control over the bank and roll of the aircraft.

Abstract: A machine element in the form of a screw gear having a threaded circumferential portion adapted to be engaged by a standard thread screw used as a worm is disclosed. Relative rotation of the standard thread screw with respect to the threaded portion of the screw gear causes the screw gear to also relatively rotate. Additionally, linear motions of the screw are possible wherein the screw gear acts as a pinion while the standard thread screw acts as a rack. This screw gear and its associated standard thread screw can be operated as either a worm and gear or as a rack and pinion. The screw gear and/or standard thread screw engaged therewith may be manually or power operated. The screw gear can be made by cutting or forming a threaded circumferential portion on the screw gear blank with a standard screw tap of the same size as the standard thread screw with which the screw gear is to be used. Additionally the screw gear can be formed in other conventional manner such as by molding.
