  • Patent number: 5409356
Abstract: Fluid wells, particularly oil wells, exert heavy shock loads on the string of sucker rods extending down to the fluid pump located adjacent to the producing formation. A conventional rocker arm must lift the sucker rods the column of oil in the casing plus the weight of the fluid pump, overcome the inertial load and then come to a stop before reversing the stroke. The employment of linear induction motors to reciprocate the oil well rocker arm and then operate as a generator on the reverse stroke reduces the shock loading and the returns the generated electrical energy to the well pumping system. The instant invention greatly reduces the maintenance costs of a conventional oil well and provides greater efficiency of the well pumping system.

Abstract: A connection between a drive member and a driven member comprises a first nickel titanium alloy wire interconnecting the drive member and a rigid link and a second nickel titanium alloy wire connecting the rigid link and the drive member. Such a wire, when properly heat treated, has a high tensile and also a high compressive strength while at the same time the wire will bend readily if there is misalignment between the longitudinal movements of the drive and driven members. Thus the assembly functions as a two-ball joint drive line similar to that used in automobiles. A preferred usage is in driving the plunger of a syringe in a dosage metering system from a moving machine element where the syringe bore and direction of movement of the machine element may be slightly out of alignment. Wear of the syringe seals is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5179871
Abstract: A memory cartridge unloading system in which a memory cartridge inserted into a connector provided in a main body of an apparatus using a memory cartridge can be pulled out from the connector by use of a leverage mechanism. In the unloading system, the memory cartridge is moved in the discharge direction thereof by the leverage mechanism. In the leverage mechanism, the leverage thereof can be changed according to the positions of movement of the memory cartridge in the discharge direction, so that a first force can be generated until the memory cartridge is pulled out from the connector. Thereafter, a second force less than the first force is generated which can pull out the memory cartridge from the apparatus main body, the second from being an amount necessary for a finger catch.

  • Patent number: 5167107
Abstract: There is disclosed a pinch sealer drive mechanism for a form fill and seal machine, or the like, wherein a bi-directional rotary actuator is employed to rotate a crank with two oppositely disposed levers, each of which is linked to a slide. Thus, there are two substantially identical symmetrically disposed linkages consisting of a lever, a link and a slide, whereby the slide is caused to have a relatively low velocity at the extremes of its motion, thereby producing a smooth vibration free operating mechanism to which the heat seal bars or other pinch sealing apparatus may be attached. A preferred embodiment of the apparatus has a duplicate of the above described crank, lever, and link mechanism for the distant end of the slide, and the second mechanism is driven from and synchronized with the first by an endless belt drive to one of two sprockets fixed on a rotatable shaft and then from the second sprocket on such shaft to a sprocket connected to rotate the crank of the second mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5161925
Abstract: A tool head for moving a tool to a workpiece and applying an axial force thereto includes a grooved tubular spindle mounted on a fixed shaft for relative axial and rotational movement. The spindle is rotated by a timing belt transmitting power from a driver timing pulley. The timing belt is fitted around the timing pulley and grooved spindle with a pair of 90.degree. twists in the loaded and unloaded sections between the two pulleys. As power is applied to the timing pulley, the belt migrates toward the end of the pulley and the spindle closest to the unloaded section of the belt; and when a resistant torque is applied to the spindle the timing belt migrates to a stable position with respect to both the timing pulley and the grooved spindle and transmits torque and an axial force to the spindle.

Abstract: A device for positioning objects within a sealed vacuum chamber (112) comprises a stationay housing (114), which is sealingly attached to the vacuum chamber (112). Located within the housing (114) is a tubular body (158) capable of rotating and translating within the stationary housing (114) through the interaction of an outer magnet (116), which slides and rotates on the surface of the stationary housing, and an inner magnet (118), which is attached to the tubular body (158). A shaft (198) is located inside the tubular body, but cannot be shifted axially with respect to this body. The front end of shaft (198) extends into the vacuum chamber (112) and may carry a specimen or any other object to be treated or tested in the vacuum chamber. The shaft (198) is driven from an external drive mechanism (124). Rotation of the shaft can be converted into opening and closing movements of the jaws (218 and 220).

  • Patent number: 5125307
Abstract: A cropping mechanism for a surface mount machine is disclosed which cuts the feed tape supplying electronic components. The displacement of an actuator in one direction between end positions cycles the cropping blade from a start location to the cutting location and back to the start location. The actuator has a cam which rides in selectively configured slots defined in opposed, pivotally supported levers which support a pin received by the cutting element and controlling its displacement.

Abstract: A transfer robot for removing molded pieces provides a telescoping robot arm having a pneumatically activated gripping device mounted to a remote end. The robot arm comprises two tubes mounted coaxially inside a housing. The first tube is driven outwardly of the housing by a rodless cylinder drive; the second tube is mounted coaxially to the inside of the first tube and is itself driven by a rack and pinion arrangement which doubles the projecting speed of the second tube with respect to the projecting speed of the first tube. The robot arm is movably mounted to a cantilever rack which is itself rotatably mounted to a supporting stand.

  • Patent number: 5125290
Abstract: A device with one or more actuator racks carried by a housing for reciprocation and each meshing with a separate pinion gear having a non-circular central hole in which a complimentary coupling shaft can be removably received for rotation in unison with the gear(s). The pinion gears are carried and journalled for rotation in the housing by a pair of co-axial bushings with generally opposed and spaced apart axially projecting rims received in mating peripheral shoulders in the side faces of the gears. The gear teeth extend generally axially continuously between their side faces with the shoulders in their side edges. Preferably the radial extent of each shoulder is less than the radial extent of the teeth. When the coupling shaft is removed from the gears each pinion can rotate independently of the shaft and each other to initially position its associated rack at a desired location and when the shaft is inserted in the pinion gears they rotate in unison to simultaneously actuate the rack(s).

  • Patent number: 5111659
Abstract: In order to avoid energy losses, particularly in the case of actuating operations characterized by energetic cycles, it is suggested to insert a double-lever cam-and-roller transmission mechanism between a hydraulic accumulator and a hydraulic pressure consumer which mechanism has the effect that the accumulator pressure and the consumer pressure are always balanced. The consumer is therefore actuatable by means of slight control forces, the energy used thus remaining at a minimum. Thus, only the slight actuating energy of the control forces and the unavoidable hysteresis loss of the system need to be compensated for.

  • Patent number: 5088365
Abstract: A cut-off die set of the double cut type, in which sections of tubing are successively severed from a length of tubing, utilizing a notching cut followed by a severing cut. A rack and pinion assembly is used to transform the vertical reciprocating motion of the upper and lower platen into the horizintal reciprocating motion used for the notching stroke. The rack and pinion assembly comprises a rack mounted to the upper platen and a gear sector mounted to the lower platen, the gear sector includes a drive roller which engages a cam track on the cross slide. As the upper platen and lower platen are vertically reciprocated, the rack member causes the gear sector to rotate, sliding the drive roller through an arcuate path. Movement of the drive roller through the arcuate path causes the cross slide to move in a reciprocating manner in relation to the reciprocating motion of the upper and lower platens.
