  • Patent number: 4742725
Abstract: In a bevel gear device, wherein bevel gears are provided which are fixed to forward ends of shafts crossing each other, respectively, and in mesh with each other, and a turning force applied to one of the shafts is imparted to the other, at least either one of the shafts is made movable in the axial direction thereof, and a pre-load is applied to the movable shaft in the advancing direction, in which the bevel gears are in mesh with each other, by use of a first force. As a consequence, fluctuations of the backlash are reliably absorbed, necessity of the backlash adjustment is eliminated, and an excessively high pre-load can be prevented from being generated. Furthermore, another pre-load is applied to the movable shaft in the direction reverse to the first force, by use of a second force weaker than the first force. As a consequence, a tooth surface force applied to the bevel gears can be reduced.

  • Patent number: 4736645
Abstract: The invention is a further development of the gear-head unit for a manipulator described in German Open Patent Application No. 34 28 748. In order to increase the radius of action and range of applicability of the gear-head unit a structural arrangement with three concentric drive axes and four allowed rotational motions of front, intermediate and rear segments of the manipulator is set forth. These front, intermediate and rear segments are pivotally mounted together about first and second inclined pivot axes which are inclined to each other and to the main drive shaft axis. Along these inclined pivot axes two hollow drive shafts connected with each other extend which are supported by reduction gears in the front and/or intermediate segments. Because of that simultaneous opposing rotational motions of the intermediate and rear segments can be obtained from a single drive motor.

  • Patent number: 4735104
Abstract: An input shaft is keyed to a first bevel gear, in constant mesh engagement with a second bevel gear keyed to a countershaft and rigidly associated with a first clutch, for causing a first pinion to become rotatively engaged with or disengaged from the input shaft. The second bevel gear is rigidly associated with a second clutch for causing a second pinion to become rotatively engaged with or disengaged from the countershaft. The first and the second pinions are in constant mesh engagement with an output bevel gear keyed to an output shaft, so that by selectively engaging one of the clutches and disengaging another of the clutches, the input and output shafts can be selectively caused to rotate counter-directionally or co-directionally. The axes of the shafts converge towards a common point to simplify the gear arrangements.

  • Patent number: 4712983
Abstract: A pneumatic pump has provision for being driven by a conventional electric hand drill and chuck that are un-modified so that they can be detached by loosening the chuck jaws and used for other purposes. The provision includes first and second input shafts protruding at right angles to each other and connected by a bevel gear on each. In addition to improving drive access, to provide a choice of drive ratios, the bevel gears have different diameters. The rotary output of the shaft and bevel gear arrangement drives a reciprocating piston in a cylinder that, in association with check valves and a hose connection, can inflate a pneumatic tire, at a speed and to a pressure, determined by which drive ratio is chosen. The drill can be freely swiveled about either input shaft to which attached. A gauge indicates cylinder pressure. A frame permits the assembly of drive and pump to be used to pressurize a tank for storage of compressed air.

  • Patent number: 4413865
Abstract: A lower unit for a marine propulsion device includes a drive shaft housing having a lower end, a gearcase housing connected to the lower end of the drive shaft housing and having an interior wall defining an elongated cavity, the interior wall including a first surface portion transverse to the longitudinal axis of the elongated cavity and a second surface portion transverse to the longitudinal axis and spaced circumferentially from the first surface portion. A propeller shaft is located in and extends axially through the gearcase housing cavity, and a propeller is supported on the propeller shaft. A hollow bearing carrier member encircles the propeller shaft for rotatably supporting the propeller shaft inside the gearcase housing. The bearing carrier member is supported by the interior wall of the gearcase housing and carries a bearing rotatably engaging the propeller shaft.

  • Patent number: 4402234
Abstract: A three-axis wrist mechanism has three independent rotational axes with a point of mutual intersection. A stationary housing contains one of the axes while another axis is disposed in a tool support member. An intermediate axis is disposed in an intermediate housing. A plurality of gear trains provide the independent rotation of components about the three axes to permit selective positioning of a tool mounting surface within a substantially hemispherical envelope. The gear trains are arranged so that an unobstructed gear passage is maintained between the stationary base and the tool support member for accommodating hoses and/or wires which are used to transmit fluid and power to a tool mounted on the mounting surface of the tool support member.

  • Patent number: 4321838
Abstract: A power transmission device adapted to be employed with a chain saw for providing a rotary output in a plurality of directions. The device includes a housing having an input shaft coupled with an output shaft where the input and output shafts are right angles to one another. The housing serves as the support for the driven mechanism and provides mounting flanges about both the input and output shafts. The mounting flange associated with the input shaft cooperates with a chain guideplate to adjustably mount the housing to the chain saw. By simply loosening two screws, the orientation of the output shaft relative to the chain saw can be changed by up to substantially 180 degrees. The mounting flange around the output shaft is designed to allow a 360-degree range in orientation of the driven device about an axis coincident with the axis of the output shaft.

  • Patent number: 4311435
Abstract: A balanced power transmission device having specific utility for windmill applications utilizing conventional propellers on a horizontal shaft. The horizontal propeller shaft is located on a tower and drives a pair of freely rotating gears in opposite directions mounted on vertical coaxial shafts. The opposite rotating gears are each variably connected to counter-rotating coaxial shafts through individual ratchets that cause the shafts to rotate in opposite directions and thereby balance out any residual torque. The counter rotating shafts extend to the base of the supporting tower and are connected in a driving relationship through a pair of gears each directly connected to the coaxial shafts. The pair of gears drive a single bevel gear which in turn is connected to a suitable generator located on the ground for generating electric energy. The counter rotating coaxial shafts prevent any tendency of the propeller shaft to rotate about the drive shafts due to torque caused by propeller rotation.

  • Patent number: 4297907
Abstract: In a gear drive for drivingly connecting two rotatable shafts the transmitted power and torque is split between two parallel paths to reduce the size and required power handling capacity of the gears and other components. The power and torque is divided between the two paths by an axially shiftable torque distributing member carrying two gears each meshing with a respective one of two other gears each comprising part of a respective one of the two parallel power paths. The torque distributing member is rotatably supported relative to the frame or casing of the drive by a bearing surrounding and engaging the member itself. This accurately locates and fixes the axis of rotation of the member and reduces the bearing requirements for its associated shaft.

Abstract: A jointed drive unit is provided having a power output shaft used for driving a socket or the like, and an input shaft which transmits power to the output shaft through a gearbox permitting any angular orientation between input and output shafts greater than about 20.degree.. The mechanism is more than merely a gearbox for transmitting rotational motion at an acute angle because due to the gear arrangement and a ratchet mechanism incorporated in the preferred embodiment the output shaft can be made to rotate, not only by rotating the input shaft, but also by pumping the input shaft in a plane parallel to the output shaft, or alternatively, moving the input shaft back and forth in a plane perpendicular to the output shaft in conventional open end or box end ratchet wrench fashion.
