  • Patent number: 6112858
Abstract: An assembly line fixture includes an elevator having a mounting surface, and a turntable mounted on the mounting surface and rotatable about an axis of rotation with respect to the mounting surface. Also mounted on the mounting surface are a detent mechanism, a locking mechanism, and a clamping mechanism. The detent mechanism includes a roller that is spring biased against the turntable, and that is operable to resist rotation of the turntable at preselected angular positions. The locking mechanism includes a lever, a locking member, and a biasing member. The locking member engages notches in the turntable to prevent the turntable from rotating. The lever actuates the locking member and the biasing member biases the locking member toward the notches for engagement therewith. The clamping mechanism includes at least one clamp that is adapted to engage a portion of an apparatus.

Abstract: An assembly for carrying out operations in the transfer, manufacture, or assembly of components having an open center turntable, rotatable about a vertical axis, having a number of work positions adapted for alignment with component supply, assembly, and removal. The platform is movably borne on an open center fixed base support, by means of bearings journalled between the support and the turntable proximate the work force exerted on the component at the turntable work station. The platform is rotated about the open center fixed support by means of a substantially circular drive hub attached to the platform. A drive belt, coupled to the drive pulley of a motor, located beneath the platform peripherally engages the drive hub about a circular belt raceway attached to the hub. As the drive pulley rotates, the turntable rotates through a defined set of motions by means of the drive belt arrangement.

Abstract: A reloader for reloading cartridges. A reciprocating plunger carries a turret that rotates around the axis of the plunger. The turret carries a plurality of cartridges for reloading, the cartridges being symmetrically spaced around the turret axis and adapted to be indexed around the axis in a step-by-step sequence. An overhead die holder contains a plurality of dies spaced in a symmetrical pattern similar to that of the cartridges but in fixed positions. A center opening in the die holder houses a rotatable bushing. The rotation of the bushing is controlled in part by a one-way clutch. An indexing shaft affixed to the turret extends from the turret axis through the bushing. The shaft has a multi-sided cross section and is slidably fitted to the bushing in a manner that prevents relative rotation. The configured cross section has an axial twist and when forced through the bushing by the reciprocating plunger, causes turning of one or the other of the shaft and turret or the bushing.

  • Patent number: 4827801
Abstract: A rotatable offset indexable fixture is rotatable by being mounted on a work spindle. A faceplate is journaled on the fixture for rotation about an indexing axis parallel to but spaced from the workpiece spindle axis. A workpiece may be secured to the faceplate. First and second cooperable toothed coupling members are concentric with the indexing axis and one is fixed to the rotatable workpiece spindle and the other fixed to the faceplate so that they rotate together about the spindle axis when coupled together. A fluid-actuated piston is provided to relatively move the coupling members along the indexing axis to couple and uncouple the members and for independent rotation of the second coupling member when uncoupled. A first aperture may be machined in the rotating workpiece concentric with the spindle axis and then the faceplate indexed to a second position and a second aperture machined concentric with the spindle axis at a location spaced from the first aperture.

  • Patent number: 4785513
Abstract: A compound turret for machine tools such as latches or the like having rotating and non-rotating tooling turrets mounted on a single housing. The compound turret includes a primary drive and a secondary drive. The primary drive includes a compound turret indexing unit operable to index the rotating and non-rotating tooling turrets into the turret operating and turret storage positions. The compound turret indexing unit consists of a harmonic drive that enables the operator to incrementally vary the turret operating position. The harmonic drive achieves high reduction ratios in a single stage thus eliminating the cumbersome gear systems usually implemented to achieve the reduction ratios required. The primary drive further includes a non-rotating tool indexing unit. The non-rotating tool indexing unit is operable to index the non-rotating tooling. The non-rotating tool indexing unit consists of a harmonic drive unit similar to the compound turret indexing unit.

Abstract: A rotating and indexing mechanism (10) having two spaced apart, rows of toothed profiles (48, 52) which form camming surfaces for two spaced apart rows (62, 64) of cam followers (32). The toothed profiles (48, 54) and cam followers (32) are such that when there is relative movement between the toothed profiles (48, 54) and the rows (62, 64) of cam followers (32) in one direction, the camming action of the cam followers and toothed profiles pause incremental rotation of a shaft (16). A groove (66) is also provided for locking the two profiles and cam followers together when the desired incremental (index) position is reached. Two embodiments are shown, one where the toothed profiles are moved axially to give rotation to the cam followers and shaft, and the other where the cam followers move axially to give rotation to the toothed profiles and the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4730525
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a cutting tool having a cutting tool insert which is automatically rotationally indexable. The cutting tool includes a shank and an indexable cutting tool insert rotatably connected to the shank. The insert includes a plurality of cutting edges and side surfaces therebetween. The cutting tool is also provided with an indexing device, lock pin, cam plate and eccentric cam pin. The indexing device comprises a sliding key and a pair of spring metal legs attached thereto for engaging a serrated portion of the lock pin to which the cutting tool insert is attached. The indexing device is effective for indexing the insert on the lock pin upon rotation of the cam pin which effects a lateral movement of the cam plate along the longitudinal axis of the shank whereby the cam plate engages the sliding key causing it to also move laterally to engage the indexing legs on the lock pin resulting in rotation of the lock pin and the cutting insert attached thereto.
