  • Publication number: 20080229522
Abstract: Customers obtain customized textile materials by selecting style, shape, size, pattern and color for an undyed textile product. Based on a selection made by the customer, the textile product is transformed by a dyeing operation performed on a single item to yield a product, such as a shirt, pants, or jacket, which has a color and pattern of his or her own choosing, in the size and style he or she desires. The process can be performed in a retail setting using a dye machine which allows the process to be viewed by the customer. Preferably, the textile material is constructed from yarns which include cationic cotton alone or in combination with natural cotton or other natural or synthetic fibers, and using anionic dyes, such as a fiber reactive dye, such that the dye is exhausted during the process and effluent from the dye machine is environmentally friendly without excess dye, salts, and alkalis.

  • Patent number: 7320766
Abstract: Dyed yarns typically have inferior color fastness compared with pigmented yarns. However, dyeing offers a virtually infinite selection of colors, flexibility and more uniformity than constructions of pigmented yarns in residential carpet and other yarn applications, such as apparel. It has been found that relatively small amounts of pigment (10 to 1000 ppm) incorporated into polymeric fibers, and particularly nylon fibers used in carpets, creates lightly pigmented yarns which, when overdyed, are highly uniform and have a higher degree of apparent dye light fastness compared to normal dyed yarns. This effect is observable for both anionic and cationic polyamide polymers, and dyeing of these slightly pigmented yarns can be conducted to produce yarns of almost any color of greater depth than the base yarn.

Abstract: A method of selecting a dye for use with a spreading vehicle can comprise the steps of evaluating a first dye having polar atoms and a second dye having polar atoms to determine a first polarity index and a second polarity index, respectively; and selecting the first dye or the second dye for inclusion in the spreading vehicle based upon a comparison of the first polarity index and the second polarity index. Further, a method of evaluating a dye and formulating an ink-jet ink can comprise the steps of providing a spreading ink-jet ink vehicle; selecting a dye to be evaluated for inclusion in the spreading ink-jet ink vehicle; determining the ratio of polar atoms to carbon atoms within the dye; selecting a desired polarity index ratio range; and admixing the dye with the spreading ink-jet ink vehicle if the ratio is within the desired polarity index ratio range.

  • Patent number: 6322596
Abstract: A method of decolorizing a dyed material in a predetermined pattern, which method involves providing a dyed material and ink jet printing a solution of an oxidoreductase onto the dyed material in a predetermined pattern. The present invention further provides a dyed material which has been decolorized in a predetermined pattern by a method of the present invention. The dyed material may be, for example, a dyed textile. Also provided is a method of simultaneously decolorizing and printing on a dyed material in a predetermined pattern. The method involves providing a dyed material and ink jet printing on the dyed material in a predetermined pattern with an ink jet ink which contains an oxidoreductase and one or more dyes which are not significantly decolorized by the oxidoreductase. The oxidoreductase may be, for example, a laccase, peroxidase, or diaphorase. If desired, the dyed material may be heated after printing the solution of an oxidoreductase or an oxidoreductase-containing ink jet ink thereon.
