Abstract: A hand tools similar in design to the commonly known locking pliers. The present invention includes an offset in the jaw, placing them in a separate but parallel plane to the plane of both the handles. This offset provides clearance between the present invention and the installation surface of the material to be grasped; e.g. screws, bolts, nuts. By removing this interference the tool can more effectively engage the item thereby increasing the opportunity to manipulate the material. The offset also increases the ability of the operator to utilize the tools by providing clearance for the operator's hand. By providing clearance for the operator's hand the tools can both be clamped with more force and more force can be applied while manipulating the article in the jaws of the tool.

Abstract: A pair of locking pliers includes a first assembly defining a first handle and a first jaw, a second handle, and a second jaw rotatably coupled to the first assembly and the second handle. The second handle is movable relative to the first handle to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw. An improved lock and release mechanism has a first setting wherein the second jaw is freely movable relative to the first jaw, a second setting wherein the second jaw locks at a preset distance from the first jaw when the second handle is moved toward the first handle, and a third setting wherein the second jaw unlocks when the second handle is moved toward the first handle.

  • Patent number: 6116124
Abstract: Adjustable pliers having a pair of handles, each handle having a jaw portion, an intermediate portion and a hand-grip portion. The handles intersect each other and are pivotally mounted to each other so that movement of the hand-grip portions in one direction will move the jaw portions in the same direction. Holding means in the form of a pin extends from one of the intermediate portions and a slot is in the other intermediate portion. The holding pin extends into the slot and is slidable along the slot. The slot has receiving means in the form of notches which will receive the said holding pin when the jaw portions are placed in a predetermined position and hold them in that position. A locking assembly is also provided on the handle members to lock the two in position.

  • Patent number: 5591176
Abstract: A clamp is provided for castrating livestock. The clamp includes a pair of opposed elongated members, each having a curved jaw and a handle. The members are pivotally coupled so that the clamp may be moved between a released position with the jaws spaced apart and a clamped position with the jaws spaced apart slightly. The clamp also includes a locking mechanism so that the jaws can be locked in the clamped position. At least one of the members includes a shank for engagement with the chuck of a power rotary device such as a drill. The clamp is used to rapidly twist the spermatic cord to cause it to break and form a knot which reduces bleeding from the cord.

  • Patent number: 5176702
Abstract: Releasable ratchet mechanism for medical instruments such as endoscopic instruments are disclosed. The ratchet mechanism includes: a leaf spring with a locking barb which is located on a handle of the medical instrument; a ratchet on a lever arm of the medical instrument which lever arm is pivotally engaged to the handle; and a latch on the handle of the medical instrument. The latch on the handle engages and resiliently deforms the leaf spring to cause engagement of the locking barb in a groove of the ratchet when the latch is in a first position. When in a second position, the latch releases the locking barb from the ratchet groove. Preferably, the locking barb has an extending edge surface on an axis which is substantially parallel to the pivoting axis of the handle and lever arm, and the teeth of the ratchet have extending edge surfaces on axes substantially parallel to the extending edge surface of the locking barb.
