  • Patent number: 8127645
Abstract: A machine and method for machining parts of partial revolution. The machine has a driving sheave rotatable about a first axis and a first driven sheave rotatable about a second axis fixed relative to the first axis. An eccentric link is rotatably connected to the first driven sheave at a pivotal connection that is spaced a predetermined distance from the second axis. A belt is wrapped around the driving sheave and the first driven sheave so that rotation of the driving sheave causes the first driven sheave to rotate. A second driven sheave is rotatable about a third axis fixed relative to the second axis. A second driven sheave contacts with the eccentric link. The eccentric link moves in a reciprocating motion when said first driven sheave is caused to rotate and causes reciprocating rotary motion in the second driven sheave, which is transferred to a part being machined.

The hot pierce and tube process converts a standard solid round billet by heating it well beyond its annealing temperature. The billet is then pierced with a lance and hot rolled into a seamless tube. The tube is then precision flow formed as an incremental metal forming technique in which a tube of metal is formed over a mandrel by a multiple rollers using tremendous pressure. The rollers deform the work piece, forcing it against the mandrel, simultaneously lengthening the part axially and radially thinning the cross-sectional wall of the workpiece.

Abstract: A stationary frame is positioned in surrounding relation with the surface of a polyethylene conduit to be prepared for scraping preliminary to performing electrofusion on the conduit by a keyhole operation in an excavated underground location. A scraper tool is mounted on the frame in a fixed longitudinal position to rotate around the surface of the conduit. A cutting blade of the scraping tool extends longitudinally a preselected length on the conduit into contact with the surface of the conduit. Rotation of the scraper tool carries the cutting blade completely around the surface of the conduit to remove a uniform layer of material from the surface of the conduit. Any out of roundness existing in the conduit is removed before the scraping operation is commenced. Uniform compression is applied by split clamps surrounding the conduit. Compression of the clamps restores the conduit to a concentric configuration preliminary to the electrofusion operation.

Abstract: A turning insert formed for chip-cutting metal machining of a workpiece that rotates in a direction of rotation at a first speed of rotation around a workpiece axis, the turning insert including a front surface, an envelope surface, and a circular cutting edge located where the front surface meets the envelope surface. The cutting edge extends around the front surface and lays in a plane that forms an angle ? with the envelope surface. A tool axis extends through the turning insert in a normal direction in respect of the plane, and the turning insert, during the chip-cutting metal machining, is formed to rotate around the tool axis at a second speed of rotation. The envelope surface forms a chip surface and is arranged to meet chips formed in the chip-cutting metal machining, and the chip surface includes chip breaking means.

Abstract: A device for laser-optical generation of mechanical waves for processing and/or examining a body includes a laser light source for generation of laser light and a modulator, on which a generated laser light falls and with which, from an incident laser light, a predetermined laser light intensity distribution can be generated on or in the body, in such a way that mechanical waves are excited on or in the body, with which the body is processed and/or with which, via detection of said waves, the body can be examined. According to certain aspects of the invention, the modulator is formed as a diffractive optical element wherein a height profile structure is formed on the surface of the diffractive optical element, with which the phase of the incident laser light is varied, thus generating a predetermined laser light intensity distribution.

Abstract: There is provided a roll surface machining method and apparatus for using a cutting tool to carry out ultra-precision machining in the surface of a roll with a reduced amount of data. The apparatus and method for roll surface machining includes setting a machining start position of a cutting tool with respect to the surface of the roll by C-axis indexing of the roll and positioning of the roll in the axial direction (Z-axis direction) both with respect to the cutting tool. Also the cutting tool and the roll are moved relative to each other in the axial direction of the roll by position control using C-Z axis interpolation, thereby forming a three-dimensional pattern in the surface of the roll.

  • Patent number: 7942086
Abstract: A process for hobble lathing, and preferred process applications, for the cutting of workpieces with non-circular or discontinuous contours on programmable lathes. The use and combination of a special program e.g. of thread cycles and hobble values for the diameter and/or the longitudinal axis or the pitch, the angle of the spindle, in option of a reciprocal-step technique and interleaved machining sequences opens up virtually infinite possibilities. The preferred applications of the process allow special threads to be cut on screw-in bodies, e.g. screw-in artificial hip joint sockets and bone screws for example with neutral or virtually any angle of pitch or relief of the thread blade as well as e.g. internal and external contours on workpieces for circular wedge connections. A particularly beneficial hip joint socket is presented comprising so-called screw or threaded surfaces.
