  • Patent number: 4617714
Abstract: A process and apparatus for finishing the surface of a guide roller uses a drive belt under tension to ensure a uniform surface finish. Prior to surface machining, bearings at el. are inserted into the central bore of a guide roller sleeve to form a guide roller assembly. The assembly is mounted loosely on a stationary shaft and driven to rotate by an endless drive belt at a known tension. A cutting bit machines the outer surface of the sleeve as it rotates. The bit pressure against the sleeve is less than the frictional force of engagement between the guide roller and the belt.

Abstract: A steady rest is disclosed for alternatively supporting the interanl and external surfaces of a tubular workpiece during a machining operation. Each outer end of a plurality of movable fingers includes first and second workpiece contact devices such as rollers. The second contact device is offset from the longitudinal axis of the finger so that it may engage the inner periphery of the workpiece. The opposite inner ends of the outer fingers ride in slots having opposing arcuate cam surfaces. One cam surface provides backup support for its finger when externally contacting the workpiece while the other cam surface insures stability when its finger is contacting the inner periphery of the workpiece.

Abstract: Cutting tools 12 are individually connected in common to rollers 2b supporting a rotationally driven tube T to be cut. The tools and rollers are paired mechanically such that the cutting edge of each tool and the tangent point G between the associated roller and the surface of the tube lie in the same radial plane passing through the longitudinal axis T--T of the tube. This arrangement makes it possible to maintain constant the penetration depth of the cutting tools into the surface of the tube even if the tube is oval or elliptical.

  • Patent number: 4302958
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for making rings from tube stock (10) by a part-off rolling tool (12,15) which is advanced radially into the tube stock to form successive rings, e.g. annular blanks for subsequent roll forming into bearing rings. The tube stock is indexed forward after separation of each ring. Errors in the length of tube stock indexed forward each time are contained by forming a locating groove (47) on the tube stock by means of a groove-rolling tool (40) set at an appropriate axial distance from the part-off rolling tool (12) and moved radially with it. In the next cycle the groove (47) automatically centers the part-off tool as the latter begins its advance into the tube stock, so as to give the correct axial length of the finished ring. The part-off tool is stopped before fully penetrating the tube wall, which is then machined. Final separation takes place during this machining or in a subsequent finishing pass by the part-off tool.

  • Patent number: 4082020
Abstract: A tool-clamping device especially for a pipe cutoff machine, and a method of setting up a pipe cutoff machine. The clamping device includes a base and an overlying cap between which the tool is clamped. Spring means within the base and cap urge the cap to a tool-releasing position. Hydraulic means within the base pull the cap to a tool-clamping position against the action of the spring means. In setting up the machine, a tool is lightly clamped in the device, moved into contact with a pipe chucked in the machine to adjust the overhang, and firmly clamped for cutting.

  • Patent number: 4072072
Abstract: A device is provided which permits the simultaneous cutting or bisecting of a plurality of tires. Large, vertically mounted, circumferentially slotted wheels each adapted to receive a circular cutting blade in each slot, receive the tires. The cutting blades are mounted overhead on a shaft which traverses a pivotally mounted beam which is raised and lowered by a piston. A brake is provided for engaging the tread of the tire, and tensioning means engages the lower rim of the tire to exert a downward pressure when the overhead beam is lowered. Turning power is provided to the cutting blades by means of belts or chains which connect a motive source with the shaft on which the blades are mounted. Collars on either side of the cutting blades engage the tire tread when the blades are lowered to turn the tire. A plurality of slots and corresponding cutting blades can be provided for each wheel with spacers to determine the width of sections cut from the tire.

  • Patent number: 4072073
Abstract: A pipe cutting machine having a pair of driven rollers and a free wheeling cutter wheel with novel means for advancing the cutter radially into the work. A single column with rack and key adjustment arrangement accommodates different pipe diameters rapidly. The cutter advancing hand lever operates with an eccentric for large mechanical advantage. Unique hole, keyway and split-ring clamping means are included for properly aligning the cutter wheel axis parallel to the drive roller axes at any predetermined column height. The rollers are both driven from an all spur (or parallel shaft helical) gear arrangement and are supported from a cantilevered spindle and bearing arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4030385
Abstract: A washer cutting machine is disclosed wherein a sleeve of an elastomeric material suitable for use as a washer is placed on a mandrel and rotated. A predetermined length of the sleeve extends beyond the end of the mandrel, and a knife-edge moves in a radial direction to cut a ring from the end of the sleeve of a width such that it may be suitable for use as a washer. The machine is programmed so that the steps of loading the sleeve on the mandrel, cutting a washer from the sleeve, advancing the sleeve the width of a washer to be cut at the completion of each cutting operation, and stopping operation of the machine after the last washer has been cut therefrom, are all carried out automatically.

  • Patent number: 4014228
Abstract: Method and apparatus for trimming cylindrical articles, particularly can bodies, to a predetermined longitudinal length by sequentially feeding such cylindrical articles into carriage pockets rotating around a main shaft synchronously with an axially aligned plunger at one end of each carriage pocket and a similarily aligned mandrel at the other end of the carriage pocket. At predetermined positions, the plunger moves into the aligned carriage pocket and pushes a cylindrical article therein onto an aligned mandrel which is rotated around its own axis as well as around the main shaft. As the mandrel rotates, a fixed arcuate blade which cooperates with a cutting edge defined in the mandrel is engaged to shear an annulus portion from the end of the cylindrical article thereby trimming the cylindrical article to a predetermined and repeatable length. Upon severing of the annulus, a fixed cutter blade engages the annulus to transversely cut the annulus into an open ring.
