  • Patent number: 6033289
Abstract: An apparatus for processing a ceramic laminate comprising an array of unfired ceramic substrates having intersecting slots in at least two directions formed on a side thereof. The apparatus includes a frame and a vacuum chuck fixture movable with respect to the frame for securing the laminate. A plurality of the blade assemblies are independently movable and adapted for passage through different slots in the laminate to loosen debris therefrom. Each blade assembly comprises a pair of blade portions having opposed and spaced tapered cutting edges biased against the wall of the slot by a spring. The pair of blade portions is adapted for lateral movement during passage along the slot toward and away from the slot wall, wherein one of the blade portion pairs guides the other of the blade portion pairs for contact with the slot wall.

Abstract: A compensating link arrangement is operatively associated with one of two blades in a shear assembly. The angular position of the links may be selectively adjusted to alter a horizontal force component that counteracts a separation force associated with the blades during a cutting stroke. According to one arrangement, the compensating links are disposed on the lower blade or bed knife. Providing the compensating links on the bed knife is particularly useful in a servo-controlled version of the shear assembly since inertial forces associated with the servo-controlled, movable blade do not affect the bed knife.

  • Patent number: 4771666
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a food processing machine for processing a sheet of gelatinous food material into a fibrous product. The machine includes a knife roller having a plurality of parallel annular disk-like blades, a counter roller having a cylindrical outer surface, and a nozzle for jetting a stream of a fluid from the sheet feeding side of the rollers. The jet of fluid flows between the annular blades of the rotating knife roller and prevents the food material from sticking to the blades.

Abstract: A refillable dispenser for web materials has a housing 1 and a snap-fitted cover 2. A slidable cutter 3 rides in a slit 25 of cover 2. A vertical cutting support surface 11 is formed as an integral extension of a horizontal roll support plate 9. Baseplates 9 may also be integrally formed with back wall 8 of housing 1. The junction of plate 9 and cutting surface 11 define with the adjacent edge of cover 2 a dispensing slot 14, so replacement of rolls 17 is facilitated and threading of web material is simplified. A cooperating lip 18 and recess 19 on surface 11 facilitate grasping the end of the web, and a labyrinthine web path 20 defined by ribs 15, 16 prevents retraction of web material, particularly clingly plastic wrap, back onto the roll after cutting. A leaf spring 29 inside cover 2 urges a disk-shaped blade 23 into a slot 24 of surface 11 while a housing surrounding the blade protects the user.

  • Patent number: 4656904
Abstract: A cutter apparatus is disclosed for cutting elongated food products such as french fry potato strips, to cut them in two or to remove defects. The cutter apparatus includes two independently operated knives which are actuated by pneumatic cylinders controlled by solenoid valves that apply air pulses to such cylinders for fast operation. The valves are operated in response to control signals produced by light sensor means which senses the defect and causes a central processing unit of a computer to produce the control signals. The knife blades are each connected to the piston rod of the cylinder by a flexible resilient connector for causing the blade to move in a non-linear manner downward in response to linear movement of the piston rod for cutting the defect from the food product while such product is moving along a conveyor belt beneath such cutter, without arresting movement of the food product.

Abstract: A guillotine assembly is provided wherein a blade is insertable between two halves of an anvil to cut a paper web. The blade is provided with teeth which engage triangular grooves in a resilient member of the anvil which is pressed against a rigid anvil plate. Points on the teeth first penetrate the web. Thereafter, tooth mid-sections form a series of slits in the web. Thereafter, points of contiguity between the teeth jam the slits to sever the web. The teeth each enter one of the grooves in the resilient member for the points of contiguity to engage and displace the resilient member in the final stage of cutting.

  • Patent number: 4587875
Abstract: A portable sawing device having a frame attachable by clamping means against the underside of a workpiece support bench. A portable circular power saw is supported on and engaged by an adapter plate hinged to a bearing plate at the forward part of a supporting arm. The adapter plate with the saw is movable about the horizontal hinge axis, between a lowered cutting position and a raised, tilted-up, non-cutting position, and is spring biased upwardly. The supporting arm comprises two concentric telescoped cylinders: the inner, bearing the saw, is rotatable within the outer and lockable thereto for bevel cutting; the outer is cantilevered forwardly from a support column vertically disposed behind the bench. The column is carried by a horizontal cross member secured between the ends of two parallel rods horizontally and forwardly disposed beneath the frame and slidably mounted in sleeves which are secured to a plate rotatably and lockably attached to the frame.

The arm is moveably connected to the frame and is guided into position to engage the workpiece by tracks and followers. The workpiece is engaged on opposite sides by a tool and an anvil which perform an operation thereon. The forces applied by the tool and the anvil are equalized by a pivotable member to prevent distortion of the workpiece while performing the operation. The pivotable member engages a biasing spring which is connected to the frame on its lower end and engages the arm on its upper end to urge the arm in one direction relative to the frame.

  • Patent number: 4510841
Abstract: A paper shear mechanism consists of a guillotine having a fixed blade and a pivoted blade. The cutting edge of the fixed blade is concavely curved so that paper to be cut as fed between the blades assumes a corresponding curvature and is given some longitudinal rigidity during the cutting operation. The pivoted blade is of composite structure to simplify the manufacturing process and thus reduce cost. Essentially, it includes a cutting section stamped from flexible sheet steel shim to provide a cutting edge with the desired nip angle. The flexible steel section is spot welded to a mild steel backing member with an elongated spring member sandwiched between the two. The spring member has a number of spring teeth which exert a force along the length of the flexible section to deflect its cutting edge laterally towards the fixed blade. By this means contact between the cutting edges is maintained along the length of a cut and relief between the facing surfaces of the two blades is provided.
