Abstract: A microtome method and apparatus includes a microtome blade configured to oscillate in a direction transverse to a direction of advancing a cut, and a first flexure to support and guide the blade. The first flexure is compliant in the transverse direction while being stiff in the cut direction. A second flexure operatively engaged at one end portion with the first flexure, is stiff in the transverse direction while being compliant in the cut direction. The other end portion of the second flexure is rotatably engaged by an eccentric driven by a rotatable actuator, which oscillates the blade in the transverse direction while effectively isolating non-transverse motion from the blade. The second flexure is configured to move independently of any guides or other stationary objects during oscillation.

  • Patent number: 5826479
Abstract: A cutting device capable of obtaining high speeds, approximately three times faster than known cutting devices by using a structure employing an internal positive cam. A rotary slider rotates upon rotation of a spline shaft via a gearbox, and the operation is such that a track of a wedge-shaped blade tip of a male cutter lies along a workpiece via cam followers slidably rotating over a sliding surface of an internal positive cam, cutting the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5791222
Abstract: A tool including two flat parallel flanges (2 and 3), defining between them a space (4) which corresponds to the thickness of a cutting blade (5) and including two symmetrical slots which have profiles that are roughly identical to that of a gutter (7) so as to constitute a guiding cradle for cutting the gutter by operation of the cutting blade (5) between flanges (2 and 3). The guiding cradle is defined by slots delimited in an upper zone by a convex contour (6b) of a fixed part of the flanges, and in a lower zone by the concave contour (6a) of a movable part, so that a movable part can be articulated at one of its ends around a fixed axis of rotation (8) like a jaw (9) in the open position (0), to allow free passage of the gutter (7) and in the closed position (F) constitutes a fixed support for cutting.

  • Patent number: 5718528
Abstract: A cutting mechanism for a printing apparatus is described. The cutting mechanism is particularly suitable for tape printers. In the cutting mechanism, one of a cutting blade and an anvil is mounted for rolling motion with respect to the other so that as the rolling motion occurs a cut is made through the tape. Moreover, the cutting mechanism can be actuated by a handle which lies flush with the printer casing and which can be actuated externally of the casing.

  • Patent number: 5479711
Abstract: The housing of the reciprocating saw includes rectilinear guide bars mounting a drive block for reciprocating movement by the motor of the power tool. The drive block has a recess defining arcuate cam surfaces. A blade clamp has a cam follower engaging the arcuate cam surfaces of the drive block. When the blade engages the work, relative movement between the cam follower and the arcuate cam surfaces on the drive block causes orbital movement to be imparted to the working end of the saw blade. Means are provided for clamping the blade holder to the drive block in two different positions. This clamping deactivates the orbital mechanism and permits the blade to be locked in two different cant positions relative to the axis of reciprocation of the drive block.

  • Patent number: 5375492
Abstract: A stack of folded and glued corrugated paperboard boxes is slit in unison with a thin cutting blade having a linear cutting edge disposed parallel to the plane of the boxes and moved through the stack in an angular direction to slit essentially one box at a time. The stack is squared before slitting to align the box edges, however, the force of the blade on the stack as it moves therethrough holds the receding stack together such that the cut halves of each box may part laterally as the blade passes therethrough to avoid any crushing of the corrugated paperboard media.

  • Patent number: 5261262
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting corrugated webs having louvers from a strip which is continuously formed to define undulating fins or corrugations extending transversely of the strip. The method and apparatus comprises periodically interrupting the movement of the corrugated strip, locating the strip, and severing the corrugation along an apex by moving a shearing cutting blade such that the blade is moved to engage and cut beginning at one longitudinal edge and progressively across the apex of the corrugation to the other edge of the corrugation. The apparatus functions to lift the knife blade initially to separate the corrugation thereby moving louvers out of contact with one another such that the louvers would not be severed by the movement of the knife blade.

  • Patent number: 5223277
Abstract: An improved apparatus for cutting an enveloped body, which consists of an assembly having at least three circumferentially disposed cutting members, each cutting member having at least two sliding surfaces. The cutting members are assembled in sliding contact with each other such that the sliding surfaces of adjacent cutting members are slidable along each other so as to form or close a central opening surrounded by the cutting members. The opening is opened and closed for cutting the enveloped body passing therethrough. One sliding surface of a cutting member forms a convex surface, and the other sliding surface forms a concave surface complementary to the convex surface, so that the convex surface of a cutting member slides on the concave surface of an adjacent cutting member.

  • Patent number: 4934236
Abstract: A sheet slicing mechanism includes a rigid frame member supporting a stepper motor coupled to a drive gear. A rotatably supportable rotary member includes a driven gear coupled to the drive gear and is rotatably supported upon the frame. A blade frame having a generally cylindrical configuration is received within the rotary member and is freely movable in the vertical axis. The blade frame supports a cutting blade and a cutting force weight. The rotary member defines a vertical slot which cooperates with an outwardly extending pin in the blade frame to permit the blade frame to be vertically movable with respect to the rotary member while locked thereto as to rotational motion. A solenoid activated lifting means is supported upon the frame and is operable to raise the blade frame to a noncutting position.

  • Patent number: 4736661
Abstract: A cutting apparatus for cutting material into a desired shape has a first travelling member and a second travelling member which are arranged on a holding stand, on which the material to be cut is placed, and which approach and separate from each other. A cutting tool for cutting the material is mounted on each of the first and the second travelling members so as to be movable in a direction that is perpendicular to the travelling direction of each travelling member. Movement corresponding to a cutting profile required for the cutting tool to cut the material to a desired shape is imparted by controlling the first travelling member and the second travelling member and the cutting tools mounted on both travelling members. In addition, such a cutting process can be carried out by driving a numerical control to spread the cutting tools mounted on both travelling members in a laterally symmetrical relation so that an annular portion can be cut to produce shaped articles.
