  • Patent number: 8345254
Abstract: A method of imaging an optically thin sample is described wherein a collimated beam is directed through the sample and then reflected back through the sample one or more times. The beam is then directed toward a detector which collects and analyzes the spatial and spectral composition of the beam. In some embodiments, the detector is a focal plane array with a large number of detector elements. In other embodiments the relative position of a single detector or a small detector array and the sample is altered and the process is repeated, thereby tracing out a large virtual detector array. In either case, the spectral information received by the detector elements can be related, by methods which are elaborated below, to information about the spatial distribution of absorption in the sample.

  • Patent number: 8336808
Abstract: An aircraft features a nose mounted propeller on a fuselage having a typical helicopter rotor assembly. By reducing the amount of forward thrust needed from the main rotor, the propeller allows greater forward speeds as the angle of attack on the rotor's blades can be kept low to avoid the stalling and violent vibration experienced by conventional helicopters at relatively high speeds. By reducing the maximum angle of attack experienced by the main rotor during its rotation during forward cruising from that of a conventional helicopter but still using the main rotor to generate lift, the addition of wings extending from both sides of the fuselage can be avoided. The aircraft may be flown in a forward direction in a generally horizontal orientation, as the nose does not have to be pitched downward to create thrust from the main rotor.

  • Patent number: 8329042
Abstract: Sludge is treated in a treatment chamber by providing a pair of electrodes in the treatment chamber and applying an electrical current between the electrodes such that one of the electrodes functions as an anode and one of the electrodes functions as a cathode in proximity to the outlet. A flow of water is induced from the sludge towards the outlet by the electrical current. An ion exchange textile comprising exchangeable functional groups grafted thereon is located in proximity to at least one of the electrodes such that the ionic forms of the metals are exchanged with the functional groups on the ion exchange textile. Accordingly the sludge is dewatered and metals in the sludge are captured commonly in the treatment chamber while the electrical current simultaneously inactivates pathogens in the treatment chamber.

  • Patent number: 8316617
Abstract: A roof object is supported on a weatherproofing roof membrane of a building roof structure using a support device including a mounting block and a coupling sheet. The mounting block is a resilient block of material for damping vibrations mechanical roof objects. The coupling sheet is mechanically connected to the mounting block using threaded fasteners which clamp a portion of the coupling sheet to the bottom of the mounting block. The remainder of the coupling sheet spans the bottom side of the block to protect the roof membrane from wear resulting from relative movement between the block and the roof membrane. The coupling sheet is also formed of a bond compatible material with the roof membrane so that the block can be held down onto the roof structure even when the block is not bond compatible with the roof membrane by instead bonding the coupling sheet to the roof membrane.

  • Patent number: 8319508
Abstract: A leak in a membrane on top of a horizontal roof deck is located by applying conductive wires on the membrane underneath the aggregate in a grid pattern. A measuring and switching circuit generates voltage having a positive attached to the roof deck and a negative attached to the wires. The circuit has a relay for each wire which can be switched between a current sensor system and the negative potential. The sensor system is arranged to sense at each of the wires in turn the current flowing from the roof deck through any leak in the membrane to the wire. A micro-processor operates the relays in turn to connect all the other wires to the negative as a shield while each wire is sensed. From the output of the grid the changes in current in the x and y directions are analyzed to locate the leak in the membrane.
