  • Patent number: 8294614
Abstract: A mobile communication device includes a GPS system and a communication system through a low-earth orbit communication satellites or geosynchronous satellite. The processing system periodically calculates from GPS a current position which is compared to a saved position and saved if the amount of movement is greater than a set distance and also transmits each calculated position. In order to reduce power consumption, in the event that at least one and preferably several calculated differences between the current position and the previously saved position is less than the predetermined set distance, the processing system is placed in an idle mode in which position is transmitted at a lower frequency. The position is periodically calculated and as soon as the position changes the system is returned from idle. In order to keep remote recipients informed signals indicating entry into and return from the idle mode are transmitted with the position signals.

  • Patent number: 8292623
Abstract: Systems and methods for setting posterior prosthetic teeth in production of upper and lower dentures feature tooth blocks each having inner and outer bodies having upper and lower rows of recesses therein corresponding maxillary and mandibular prosthetic teeth. The recesses of the inner and outer bodies conform to lingual and buccul surfaces of the prosthetic teeth respectively and are shaped and positioned to establish proper positioning of the prosthetic teeth relative to one another when clamped between the bodies. The two tooth blocks accommodate respective ones of left and right prosthetic poster teeth sets. Connection elements between the tooth blocks allow adjustment and subsequent locking of the relative positioning between the left and right teeth sets before setting on mandibular and maxillary casts in an articulator. The two tooth blocks eliminate the need to individually position posterior teeth on each side of the jaw.

  • Patent number: 8291684
Abstract: In a swather formed by a tractor and attached heeder for cutting standing crop to form a swath, reel speed and optionally draper speed are controlled relative to ground speed by a control system including a manually operable input and display available to the operator. The control system can be used in an automatic mode to set an index value for an actual difference in reel speed relative to ground speed and to vary reel speed accordingly. In this mode a manually operable control varies the index. The control system can be switched by the operator to manual in which case the same control varies the actual reel speed. Minimum reel speed can be set by the same control and when operative the automatic system does not allow reel speed to fall below the minimum set value despite the values of index and ground speed.

  • Patent number: 8281851
Abstract: A cable head for use with coiled tubing electric line in well operations has upper and lower housings attached by a shearable connection to allow release of the lower housing and any downhole equipment carried thereon. A piston is slidable within the housing by fluid pumped through the coil tooling to release a locking mechanism that otherwise prevents the shearing disconnect of the housings. Flow ports in the housing to allow pumping or circulation of fluid through the cable head are positioned to remain continuously open, regardless of the piston position, to maximize the range of flow rates over which fluid can be circulated. The electric line of coiled tubing is only stripped of its armor past sealed receipt thereof in a cable passage below the flow path of the fluid, thereby avoiding exposure of the conductor to the fluid to minimize the potential for damage or failure.

  • Patent number: 8281546
Abstract: A wind turbine is formed of a concrete tower which is erected by slip forming. A primary lifting device is erected onto the tower by being lifted together with the slip form and being subsequently transferred onto the tower from the slip form after the tower has been formed. The nacelle, generator, and rotor of the turbine are then lifted onto the tower using the primary lifting device. A secondary lifting device supported on the tower is used to lower the primary lifting device to the ground after the nacelle, generator and rotor are assembled. The height of the tower is therefore not limited by the availability of suitable cranes so that a greater height of tower can be erected to take advantage of winds at greater elevation.

  • Patent number: 8271796
Abstract: We present an apparatus which can be used so that one party learns the value of a string distance metric applied to a pair of strings, each of which is held by a different party, in such a way that none of the parties can learn anything else significant about the strings. This apparatus can be applied to the problem of linking records from different databases, where privacy and confidentiality concerns prohibit the sharing of records. The apparatus can compute two different string similarity metrics, including the bigram based Dice coefficient and the Jaro-Winkler string comparator. The apparatus can implement a three party protocol for the secure computation of the bigram based Dice coefficient and a two party protocols for the Jaro-Winkler string comparator which are secure against collusion and cheating. The apparatus implements a three party Jaro-Winkler string comparator computation which is secure in the case of semi-honest participants.
