  • Patent number: 4289890
Abstract: 1,2 Dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilane is synthesized in high yield and good purity starting from a crude mixture of chloromethyldisilanes formed as by-products in the manufacture of silicones. The new method uses less than half as much Grignard reagent as previous methods required. The synthesis can also be used to produce other haloalkyldisilanes such as chloropentamethyldisilane or 1,1,2 trichloro-1,2,2-trimethyldisilane.

  • Patent number: 4289534
Abstract: A novel silver powder paint composition characterized by a very low fusion, or film-forming temperature, probably assignable to the relatively small amount of oxides or other undesirable occlusions within coatings formed of the powder. The invention also relates to a new process for forming such a powder; the process is believed to involve the formation of a fatty-acid silver reaction product of the surface of the silver powder before it is subjected to fusion into a metallic coating. During fusion the decomposing reactant seems to act as a flux aiding the formation of a metal film of superior appearance and strength.

  • Patent number: 4281043
Abstract: Polymodal magnetic information-recording articles formed with at least two different populations of magnetic powders, whereby at least one of the powders, being of lower intrinsic coercivity and forming means to accept a noise interference pattern, accepts a pattern which serves as a means to verify the authenticity of, or means to detect previous tampering with, the magnetic recording device. More generally, the disclosure relates to polymodal recording media characterized by incorporation of a plurality of independently-erasable ferromagnetic powder populations and processes for making and using said media. Particular advantage is disclosed for such media having a relatively small ratio of coercivity between easier and harder axis and for material wherein shape anisotropy is absent from adjacent modes in a polymodal system.

  • Patent number: 4280658
Abstract: An inexpensive, liquid-supplying and liquid-cleaning apparatus capable of functioning through capillary action. Such apparatus finds use in humidification systems, or life-support systems of varying types. It is characterized by the use of a microporous membrane having pores of a nominal size of less than 10 microns which act as capillaries in the liquid supply means, and also as means to exclude algae, fungi, etc. from the liquid being supplied. The more advantageous embodiments of the apparatus comprise a novel vacuum/pressure seal to help avoid leakage of water conducted from a flexible hose into a rigid container.

  • Patent number: 4273362
Abstract: An information-bearing article for conveying indicia from one person to a second person in such a way that the information cannot be surreptitiously detected by an intervening person. Thus, the information-bearing means is so constructed that detection thereof necessarily requires some irreparable and detectable disfigurement or mutilation of the information-bearing article. Use of the article in lottery ticket distribution and use in connection with the transfer of highly confidential governmental or business information, are typical applications. The most advantageous construction of the invention combines means to avoid surreptitious detection of the hidden indicia by optical, chemical, thermal and mechanical processes.

  • Patent number: 4269881
Abstract: A novel carpet material or mat which is characterized by an extraordinary ability to quickly and comfortably discharge any build-up of a static electricity charge on a person who has built up such a charge, say, by walking across conventional carpeting. The novel material is constructed with a backing which has a low dissipation factor and relatively low volume and surface conductivity, with a conductive thread in the pile and with an electroconductive tufting substrate sheet.

  • Patent number: 4268302
Abstract: Improved processes and products based on the discovery that metal atoms in complex relationship with complexing agents can be used to moderate the formation of organic salt seed crystals which promote an exceptionally well-ordered acicular growth of organometallic salts such as oxalates of the metal. Some acicular, i.e., needle-like, products have particular utility for being reduced to ferromagnetic metal particles which retain a surprisingly large degree of acicularity and possess extraordinarily favorable properties for use in magnetic recording applications.

  • Patent number: 4268467
Abstract: An improved process for molding fiber-reinforced articles and in particular, those articles which are formed from monofilaments such as metal fibers and processed mineral fibers of the slag type. The fiber-containing molding composition is enclosed in a restraining means, such as a bag, and placed in a mold and formed during which time the bag advantageously deteriorates.

  • Patent number: 4268531
Abstract: A packaging material, and especially condiment-carrying packages prepared therefrom, which is characterized by its thinness and consequent ease of handling. Moreover, condiments packaged therein have greatly extended storage life. In general, the package comprises using a relatively thin coating formed of an ionomer and a polyethylene of relatively low softening point, this coating conveniently being coextruded and incorporated into a laminated structure which will normally also comprise layers of cellophane and aluminum foil.

  • Patent number: 4267206
Abstract: An improved, conventionally-spoolable, magnetic tape which can be unspooled and read after exposure to very high temperatures. The improvement is largely in a thermally resistant, non-adhering, anti-static backing system, used in conjunction with magnetic face coatings.

  • Patent number: 4265974
Abstract: Electrically-conductive films of tin oxide are prepared by a novel process utilizing gaseous chemical compounds which react to form a tin-fluorine bond at a temperature which is (1) high enough so that the newly-created tin-fluorine bond-bearing molecule remains in the vapor phase; and (2) low enough so that oxidation of the molecule occurs only after the indicated re-arrangement. Films prepared by the process of the invention are characterized by surface resistances as low as 1 ohm per square when the film thickness is as thin as about a micron. These films are also characterized by extremely good reflectance of infrared radiation.

  • Patent number: 4263080
Abstract: A thinner, less-expensive-to-produce, and more easily handled, opaque sheet is formed by coextrusion of two polymeric layers containing relatively low loadings of black pigment around a third layer of polymer which is pigmented at levels higher than would be practical using conventional extrusion processes, rather than a coextrusion procedure. The sheet is an improved product for use in packaging photographic film or like products to be protected from light.

  • Patent number: 4255807
Abstract: Process and apparatus for detecting and evaluating defects in memory-retaining characteristics of magnetic tape, said process and apparatus providing means for sensing an initial error in a first track of the tape and then relating the initial error to all other errors which are sensed in other tracks of the tape within a preselected segment of tape the start of which coincides with the location of the initial error. Each of the other sensed errors within the segment defined by the initial error defines its own error evaluation segment over which it is evaluated. Thus, depending upon the error content of the tape, a plurality of overlapping error evaluation segments may be defined. Each error sensed on the tape is processed and categorized as either a one-, two- or three-track error depending upon the number of other track errors sensed within its segment. The apparatus includes means for counting and reporting the number of each type of error sensed on the tape.

  • Patent number: 4244356
Abstract: An improved solar collector has a one piece monolithic fiberglass frame and back assembly in which all of the collector components are mounted. A mounting flange integral with the frame facilities securing the collector in place on a roof or other support. The frame has a double wall construction forming internal steps that support the absorber plate and anti-convection cover at the proper locations for maximum heat collection. Further, all fluid connections to and from the absorber plate are made through the frame so that the required plumbing can be brought out in any direction between the frame walls. Suitable insulation is provided in the panel between the absorber plate and the back as well as between the frame walls to minimize radiation losses through the sides and back of the collector.
