Patent number: 4464152Abstract: A chain-belt adapted for use in a pulley drive system and comprising a plurality of connected ranks or sets of interleaved links having generally trapezoidal load blocks between adjacent pivot means which join the adjacent ranks or sets of links together to permit articulation of the chain belt. The load blocks are of generally laminated construction of a plurality of plates and resilient means are located between adjacent plates in at least some of the load blocks. Preferably an elastomeric material such as rubber is chosen as the resilient means and each load block incorporates the resilient means. The structure is effective to reduce noise generated upon engagement and disengagement of the chain-belt with the pulley flanges when compared to a chain-belt of connected ranks of links and with laminated load blocks therein but without the resilient means.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1982Date of Patent: August 7, 1984Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: John M. Patent number: 4453923Abstract: A variable diameter pulley assembly for use with a power transmission belt and adapted to be connected to a shaft comprising opposed sets of axial and radial movable generally triangular or trapezoidal-shaped flange members, the sides of opposed sets being in substantial engagement to provide at all pulley diameters a generally cylindrical and continuous surface for belt engagement. A pair of axially movable hubs supports the flange members, and each hub has guides for guiding the flange members in their axial and radial movements. A central cam member with conical cam surfaces may be provided which cooperates with cam follower surfaces of the flange members whereby axial movement of the flange members causes radial movement thereof.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1981Date of Patent: June 12, 1984Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Edward H. Cole, Jr.

Patent number: 4448428Abstract: An improved mechanical seal assembly comprising a generally stationary seal ring and rotatable seal ring, each with opposed seal faces, the stationary seal ring being connected to a stationary housing by elastomeric keys. One of said seal rings is constructed of a material such as a carbon graphite composition which is more brittle than the other which is constructed of a much harder less brittle material. As in most seals of this character, the seal faces are lubricated by a fluid film flowing radially across the opposing faces. In the absence or upon failure of the film, the rings can seize, generally resulting in a breakage of or other damage to the more brittle seal ring. However, the elastomeric connecting keys provide a cushion for absorbing dynamic forces in the tangential direction, to distribute bearing loads substantially evenly and to allow radial deflections of the stationary seal ring relative to the housing due to thermal and pressure effects.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1982Date of Patent: May 15, 1984Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Joseph A. Marsi

Patent number: 4426092Abstract: A mechanical seal assembly having a rotatable sealing ring means mounted for rotation on a shaft and a stationary sealing ring means connected to a housing flange, the sealing ring means having opposed sealing surfaces. The assembly also has means urging the sealing surfaces toward one another. The rotatable sealing ring means is of stepped configuration and constructed as an integral pair of equal axial length ring portions, one portion having its inner and outer diameters larger than the respective diameters of the other. Generally, the ring portion having the smallest inner and outer diameter is that ring portion having the sealing surface--one that opposes the sealing surface of the stationary sealing ring means. The degree of deflection of the sealing surface because of hydraulic load or pressure can be selected by selecting the diameters of the pair of ring portions, i.e.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1982Date of Patent: January 17, 1984Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Winfred J. Patent number: 4395250Abstract: A chain tensioning device comprises a pair of arms 2, 3 which are pivoted together and urged apart, so that the arm 3 applies a tensioning force to a chain, by means of a block 9 biased by a compression spring 10 axially along the arm 2 in conjunction with links 14 coupled between the block 9 and the arm 3 and serving to pivot the arm 3 relative to the arm 2, in response to such spring biased axial movement of the block 9. A catch disc 12 and rod 6 arrangement is provided to prevent return movement of the spring loaded block 9 and hence collapse of the arm 3 under load reversals of the chain.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1981Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: Borg-Warner LimitedInventor: Alan G. Patent number: 4395248Abstract: A multi-part sprocket and a multi-speed transmission comprising at least a pair of the sprockets, the sprockets each comprising an external toothed drive member surrounded by a two part externally toothed ring member, one part of which is axially movable with respect to the other with both parts having internal teeth meshing with the external teeth of the drive member. Another similar two part member surrounds the first; the similar member having external and internal teeth.A chain connects a pair of sprockets, the chain meshing the external teeth. The speed ratio between the sprocket can be changed by axially moving parts of the ring member. The ring members have beveled surfaces facing one another to guide the chain during a speed ratio change.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1980Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: John M. Patent number: RE31361Abstract: A power transmission adapted to be connected between a prime mover and a driven means which comprises a variable pulley drive comprising drive and driven pulleys connected by a belt, each having at least one flange axially movable with respect to the other. The pulleys continously rotate when the prime mover is operational. The output of the prime mover is directly connected to the pulley drive. The prime mover may be an automobile engine, the driven means may include the wheels of an automobile. A speed-responsive friction starting device with means to shift between neutral, forward and reverse is connected between the driven pulley and the driven means. Shifting of a dry, i.e, non-lubricated, belt on the pulleys when the speed ratio is changing is enhanced because of the continuous driving of the pulleys. Also, because the direction of the rotation of the pulleys is always the same, shifting between forward and reverse is enhanced, this being true for any type of belt.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Richard L. Smirl
