  • Patent number: 6130927
Abstract: A grid with coolant deflecting channels for used in nuclear fuel assemblies is disclosed. In the grid, two sets of intersecting grid strips are arranged in sets at right angles to each other prior to being encircled by four perimeter strips, thus forming a plurality of four-walled cells individually placing and supporting an elongated fuel rod therein. Each of the grid strips is made up of two narrow sheets which are deformed at a plurality of regularly spaced portions to provide nozzle-type coolant deflecting channels. The channels individually have an upright Y-shaped or reversed Y-shaped configuration capable of so deflecting coolant as to mix low temperature coolant with high temperature coolant. The channels thus form a uniform temperature distribution within a fuel assembly. The channels are so inclined with respect to the axes of the fuel rods as to form wide and linear positioning springs at middle portions thereof.

  • Patent number: 4687566
Abstract: A collar for protecting the iron spade of an anode rod for a carbon block that serves as an anode in the electrolytic production of aluminum comprises a plurality of shaped carbon blocks each with two close-fitting, abutting end faces and recesses which jointly correspond in cross-section to that of the anode spade or pin and surround the anode spade or pin projecting out of the anode block; the base areas of the said carbon collar blocks form a plane which is in contact with the carbon anode. The shaped carbon blocks are manufactured out of 60-90 wt % carbonaceous solids and 10-40 wt % bitumen binder. Because of their low pore volume the protective collars exhibit a low absorption capacity for sodium and a favorable combustion behavior during the electrolytic process.

  • Patent number: 4539561
Abstract: The surface of a material is inspected for defects by visual examination of a television picture of the surface produced by at least one camera focused on the material and transmitting an image to a screen in the form of a video signal. The connection between screen and camera is made only when a defect is detected on the surface of the material. The video signal is delimited by an upper and a lower signal level which, if exceeded, results in a trigger signal being activated. In addition a trigger mechanism and an image storage facility are provided between the screen and the camera. Appearing on the screen are only pictures of surface areas showing defects; areas without defects are not displayed on the screen.

  • Patent number: 4534834
Abstract: Pretreatment of aluminum strip or foil for lacquering, adhesive coating or laminating processes involves heavy metal compounds which are considered undesirable for many packaging purposes, in particular for foodstuff packaging. These disadvantages are avoided if the strip or foil is pretreated in an electrolyte by subjecting it to a three phase alternating current of which one phase is rectified and the side of the strip or foil to be treated is made to pass in sequence three electrodes of which at least one is connected to the rectified phase while the others are connected to the other phase of the alternating current. Such a pretreatment has the advantage over an alternating current treatment that the oxide layers offer high strength of adhesion and the treatment can be performed faster.

  • Patent number: 4525105
Abstract: The device permits controlled batch feeding from a silo with at least one outlet opening and is particularly suitable for supplying alumina from a day's storage silo to the break in the crust on a fused salt electrolytic cell for producing aluminum. Flanged on to the silo outlet is a feed pipe running at an angle steeper than 45.degree. and joining up to the upper half of a containment pipe, likewise inclined steeper than 45.degree.. This containment pipe features at the bottom a compressed air supply line, at the top a receiving or braking chamber and connecting up to that a discharge pipe. By briefly opening the control valve at regular intervals, compressed air is forced into the containment pipe and the plug of particulate material lying there ejected into the receiving or braking chamber.
