Abstract: A synthetic slag is produced by melting the mineral content of an organic carbon-containing mineral, for example, oil shale or tar sands, with a source of lime such as cement kiln dust. The organic carbon, especially hydrocarbon, content of the mineral is oxidized by oxygen gas, which typically is derived from air or an air/oxygen combination, in an exothermic reaction and the heat generated provides the thermal energy for the reaction between the mineral content and the source of lime. In this way the gaseous products will typically comprise nitrogen, unreacted oxygen, water vapor and carbon dioxide, and heat energy can be readily recovered from the hot off gas products evolving during the combustion reaction. The synthetic slag may be pelletized and employed as lightweight mineral aggregate or milled, or atomized and then milled, to cement fineness to provide slag cement.

Abstract: A method of controlling a magnetization easy axis of a ferromagnetic film, an ultrahigh-density, low power, nonvolatile magnetic memory using the control method, and a method of writing information on the magnetic memory. The method includes the step of arranging an electrode layer, a piezoelectric layer and a magnetic layer in a layered structure. Voltage is applied to the electrode layer to generate an electric field. Thereafter, lattice change is caused in the piezoelectric layer using the generated electric field. A magnetization easy axis of the magnetic layer is reversibly switched between in-plane and out-of-plane by exerting stress generated by the lattice change onto the magnetic layer.

Abstract: There is provided a sample inspection casing capable of easily and surely inspecting an object to be inspected. The sample inspection casing 1 includes: a sample mounting table 5 for mounting thereon an object 11 to be inspected; a prism cut portion 14 serving as an optical path changing portion for allowing the object 11 on the sample mounting table 5 to be irradiated with illuminating light; and an image magnifying lens 15 for transmitting light, which is reflected on the object 11 on the sample mounting table 5, to magnify an image of the object 11.
Abstract: A number drawing apparatus includes a rotating unit and collecting holes. Each ball, supplied from a supply unit provided in the central portion of the rotating unit when it rotates, randomly rolls on a surface of the rotating unit. A centrifugal force by the rotation causes each ball to move outwardly from the rotating unit, and each ball is caught in one of catching holes. Unique identifying symbols are assigned to the catching holes. This enables the draw.
Abstract: A hydraulic transfer valve system has a main valve selectively placing one of a primary and secondary hydraulic system in communication with a hydraulic load. A pilot valve provides a toggling action between the primary and secondary systems with respect to pressure changes in such systems.
Abstract: A turbine blade has a platform and an airfoil extending from a root at the platform to a tip. The airfoil has an internal cooling passageway network including at least one trailing edge cavity. A group of trailing edge holes extends from the trailing edge to the trailing edge cavity and a group of tip holes extends from the tip to the trailing edge cavity.
Abstract: A spring clutch has an arbor, a spring, and a sleeve. The spring at least partially surrounds the arbor and has a first portion coupled to the arbor to confine relative rotation of the first portion and arbor about an axis. The sleeve at least partially surrounds the spring and cooperates with the spring. The cooperation is sufficient so that an initial relative rotation between the arbor and sleeve in a first direction about the axis tends to uncoil the spring and bias the spring into firmer engagement with the sleeve. The cooperation is sufficient such that relative rotation in an opposite direction tends not to uncoil the spring and maintains the clutch in a disengaged condition.

Abstract: An encoding method for enabling a decoder to decode a structured document having a structure defined in a first schema not accessible to the decoder and resulting from a change of a second schema accessible to the decoder, the first schema defining at least one information element which is derived from a corresponding element defined in the second schema, the encoding method comprising the steps of: encoding the document using said first and second schemas into a binary stream comprising for each elements of the document a binary sequence encoding the element, and inserting in the binary sequence encoding the derived element a reference designating the first schema in which the structure of the derived element is defined, said reference designating the first schema being defined in a schema reference list containing references to all schemas used for encoding the document, the schema reference list being made accessible to the decoder.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of electroplating a Ni—Fe—P alloy using a sulfamate solution and, in particular, a method of electroplating a Ni—Fe—P alloy using a plating solution containing nickel sulfamate, iron sulfamate, phosphorous acid, and a buffer agent. The method is advantageous in that a residual stress of a deposited layer is very low and has stable mechanical properties, and excellent thermal and corrosion resistance because the deposited layer is obtained by electroplating the Ni—Fe—P alloy using the sulfamate solution useful in a high rate plating process. Furthermore, the method can be applied to various parent metals such as stainless steel, Inconel and iron alloys, and to various fields because the chemical compositions of the deposited layer are readily controlled by varying the concentration of the plating solution.
