  • Patent number: 6443549
Abstract: A method for improving tone reproduction in a digital printing system is provided. First, an image to be printed is defined. The image will have areas of minimal ink density and areas of medium to high ink density. A randomized dot placement scheme is used for dispersing ink drops in the minimal ink density areas of the image. An ordered structure scheme is used for dispersing ink drops in the medium to high ink density areas of the image.

  • Patent number: 6435637
Abstract: A system and method are provided for improving the control of vacuum and pressure in an ink jet printing system. The control is positively affected by reducing response time of the system, minimizing overshoot of the controlled parameters, such as ink pressure or system vacuum, eliminating steady state oscillations, and reducing the magnitude of the excursions of the controlled parameter in response to load changes.

  • Patent number: 6426672
Abstract: A signal processing circuit can be used to select between a high bias current and good noise performance or a low bias current and poorer noise performance. The circuit comprises an input device having high impedance and low noise characteristics. A first current source provides a minimal current level through the input device. Additional current sources provide additional current through the input device to improve noise performance of the circuit. The additional current sources can be switched into the circuit when improved noise performance is required, and switched out of the circuit to conserve power when improved noise performance is not required.

  • Patent number: 6398351
Abstract: A system for flushing ink residue from a fluid system is provided for use with a continuous ink jet print station. Ink is rapidly drained from the fluid system, and the fluid system is refilled with a flush fluid. The flow of flush fluid is directed through all fluid system components which normally contain ink. Subsequently, the flow of flush fluid can be diverted to a waste tank rather than re-circulated into the ink tank.

  • Patent number: 6363774
Abstract: A vehicle brake leakage detector installs between a vehicle brake pedal and a reference point such as a steering wheel, for testing vehicle hydraulic brake systems, and, specifically, for detecting brake fluid leaks. A brake contact at one end of the detector contacts the vehicle brake pedal and a reference end at the opposite end of the detector contacts any tangible reference location, such as a steering wheel. Force means are associated with the detector for applying force for pressurizing the vehicle brake fluid when the detector is installed. A sensor detects relative movement between the brake contact and reference end to determine whether any brake fluid leaks are present. An output source indicates whether any brake fluid leaks are detected.

  • Patent number: 6350361
Abstract: Precise control of deposition or etching of thin films on a transparent substrate is particularly useful for electroformation of nozzles and formation control. A computer based measuring system is used to measure, in real time, a test feature such as one such nozzle. The rate of material deposition and removal is controlled based on the measured value of the test feature. In particular, a video camera and microscope are used to produce images of the test feature. During the electroplating process, metal is plated onto a conductive layer, and as the plated metal layer grows up from the conductive layer of the mandrel, the plated layer can also encroach on transparent openings produced by the absence of the mandrel conductive layer. The amount of encroachment on the transparent openings is directly related to the thickness of the plated layer.

  • Patent number: 6341857
Abstract: In a continuous ink jet printing system, bleed and pullback are minimized by selecting an ink set having a particular print order, with each ink having its components selected to equalize the surface tensions of the inks. By equalizing the surface tensions, the percentage of density of the primary ink which can be printed increases, thereby increasing the secondary and tertiary color gamut.

  • Patent number: 6328920
Abstract: A plastic part having a complex structure as a first layer and a simple structure as a second layer, is formed using a method for molding. Initially, a single mold is provided, the mold having an interior cavity and a runner reaching from an exterior of the mold to the cavity. The mold is kept closed while a quantity of a first plastic material is injected via the runner into the interior cavity to form a first layer of the plastic part. The mold is then partially opened, creating an increased interior cavity section, into which a quantity of a second plastic material is injected, via the runner, to form a second layer of the plastic part. The solidified plastic part can then be ejected from the mold.

  • Patent number: 6322204
Abstract: In an ink jet printer having a printhead and a printhead docking station, an improvement is provided in installation and retention of the printhead in the printhead docking station. Straight line travel of the printhead relative to the printhead docking station is ensured using guide posts or other guiding mechanisms. Non-abrupt actuation, such as a screw drive actuator is used to translate the printhead relative to the docking station. The screw drive actuator is oriented at near right angles to the direction of translation of the printhead relative to the printhead docking station. The printhead and the printhead docking station are then aligned so that electrical and fluid connections can be made concurrently. During the installation, a consistent insertion force, such as a spring loaded toggle mechanism, is applied to the printhead, regardless of part tolerances.

  • Patent number: 6273103
Abstract: A system and method are provided for cleaning the printhead of a continuous ink jet printing system. A cleaning fluid is introduced and used to flush ink residues and debris from the interior of the drop generator, the exterior of the orifice plate, the charge plate face and the catcher face. This system and method removes dried ink residues and other debris and deposits by providing a cleaning fluid with a low surface tension to dissolve or flush away the unwanted material from the orifices. This is particularly advantageous in that the flushing and rinsing is accomplished without mechanical contact which could abrade or damage the orifices.

  • Patent number: 6274829
Abstract: A device is provided for allowing detection of a switch closure across an air gap between components. The device comprises a wireless inductive coupled switch designed for use with any suitable proximity sensor. The switch and sensor transmit a switch closure at a closable switch across the air gap. When the wireless inductive coupled switch is moved into the sensing range of the inductive proximity sensor, the ferrite core portion of the inductive coupled switch and the coil surrounding the ferrite portion are inductively coupled by the alternating field generated by the inductive proximity sensor. The alternating magnetic flux lines of the inductive proximity sensor move back and forth through the ferrite core portion and the coil. As long as the closable switch is open, no current is induced into the coil.

  • Patent number: 6274057
Abstract: Metallic bumps are formed for electrical interconnection between the charge plate and the charge drive electronics. This is achieved by having improved electrical connection between an ink jet charge plate and associated charge leads is promoted. First, a mask is aligned to permit plating of an etch mask on the charge plate coupon on the side opposite the charge plate circuitry, so as to place masked regions directly across the coupon from the contact pads of the charge plate circuitry. All the copper alloy charge plate coupon is then etched away except the small portions between the termination and the etch mask. The bump thus formed is used to provide a high pressure point electrical connection to the charge plate.
