  • Patent number: 4793304
Abstract: In a mixed cooling system for the piston of a rotary-piston internal combustion engine having a trochoid construction with a triangular piston and a liner surface in the form of a double arc of a circle, a fuel injector is arranged in a side-wall of the liner and its jet is directed toward the inside wall of the corresponding corner of the piston which forms the driving corner of the expansion chamber when the piston is about to reach its bottom dead point. The starting of the injection cycle is determined by a piston position in which the corner of the piston forming the driving corner of the expansion chamber intersects the straight line located in the axis of the injection jet, and the end of the injection cycle is determined by a piston position in which the driving corner of the expansion chamber has moved past the exhaust opening.

  • Patent number: 4791891
Abstract: A reciprocating piston engine having a sealing system between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner, or the cylinder block, using a metal gasket. It is proposed to improve such a system in a manner that, while large manufacturing tolerances are permitted, i.e. tolerances on the dimensional design of the cooperating parts as well as on the cylinder head bolt torque, reliable gastight sealing of the combustion chamber is ensured at all times. This is essentially achieved in that a circumferential raised portion on the liner flange is the only part that projects beyond the top end (sealing face) of the cylinder block and is matched to the metal gasket in a manner that when the cylinder head is tightened down on the cylinder block, the cylinder head gasket is always stressed above the yield point, with the metal gasket having such a stress/strain characteristic that once the yield point is exceeded, the horizontal deformation range (i.e. where the compressive stress is constant) is as great as possible.

  • Patent number: 4788819
Abstract: An apparatus for removing soot from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine using a loose material filter. The object is to confine the loose material in a particularly effective manner so as to produce a very high degree of soot separation in the filter. This is achieved essentially in that the (loose material) fixing element is composed of two vertically and coaxially disposed perforated tube members that form a first annular chamber, with those surfaces of the perforated tube members that face the first annular chamber being each provided with a fine-mesh screen and adjacent thereto, a coarse mesh screen. The exhaust gas passes through the filter insert transverse to the gravitational effect of the granulate particles. To compact the granulate fill, the first annular chamber can be charged with compressed air via a second annular chamber that is adjacent thereto and is provided in the upper region of the filter housing.

  • Patent number: 4788686
Abstract: A gas-laser arrangement in which the laser medium is optically pumped. An arc or spark discharge is formed to a helix, particularly by an axial magnetic field. The volume surrounded by the helical arc or spark discharge is optically excited, unimpeded by a physical wall, by radiation from the discharge, especially in the vacuum-uv spectral region, or by resonance lines. Due to the temperature difference between the helical discharge and the gas column along the helix axis, an inversion may be produced in the vicinity of the axis by appropriate choice of gas and the gas composition.
