Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting the concentration of toner in a multi-component developer of an electrophotographic copying machine utilizes a source of illumination for projecting light onto the developer, and a receiving element for measuring the intensity of light of a predetermined wavelength reflected from the developer, the predetermined wavelength being of a value selected to maximize the intensity of reflected light in response to variations in toner concentration substantially independently of the reflection characteristics of the developer. The amount or concentration of toner in the developer is varied--by the addition of suitable amounts of toner--with the measured intensity of the received reflection of light of the predetermined wavelength.
Abstract: An electrophotographic copier is provided with a reciprocable copy board. An illuminating lamp is located between a pair of spaced frame members which have rails for guiding the copy board. An improved reflector for directing light from the lamp toward the copy board is formed as a single, unitary structure including a rearwardly-extending ledge directly and rigidly supporting the lamp on the ledge at a fixed, predetermined position and orientation with respect to the reflector such that relative adjustments between lamp and reflector are eliminated.
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling the density of a reproduced image of an original to be copied in an electrophotographic copying machine by maintaining a fixed, predetermined image-developing bias voltage during development of a reference patch image and controlling the bias voltage in response to settings of image density selectors during the development of the original image.

Abstract: A suture cutter comprising a member and a blade, said blade having a knife edge and a back remote from said edge, said blade being adapted to shearingly contact said member, said member having a depth and comprising an arm, an element, and a slot therebetween, said slot having a portion adapted to receive a suture but being too small to permit a knot in said suture to pass therethrough, whereby shearing contact between said member and said blade cuts said suture leaving a stub on the side of said suture away from the tissue in which said suture is tied substantially equal in length to said depth.Variations of the foregoing device are also disclosed, including forms in which the motion between the member and the blade is obtained by a scissor-like action as well as by a tweezer-like action; in addition, an embodiment wherein the handles or gripping area of the device is in a different plane from the working end. There is also disclosed a combination of the present invention with a surgical needle holder.
Abstract: An electrophotographic copying apparatus having a photosensitive medium for normal copying operations further includes an electric charge carrying medium for receiving and storing an electrostatic latent image in accordance with external electric signals, as from facsimile transmission. The charge carrying medium is moveable between a first position spaced from the photosensitive medium and a second position in image transferable relationship with the photosensitive medium. Latent image formation on the charge carrying medium is effected at the first position thereof so as to free the photosensitive member for concurrent normal electrophotographic copying operations.

Abstract: A magnetic brush developing apparatus for use in an electrostatic recording machine has a peripheral surface rotatable for carrying a single-component developer through magnetic field zones of adjacently alternating polarities including feed-in and feedback zones on opposite sides of a developing zone. The relative strengths of the fields are arranged so that the magnetic field density concentration point is offset from the developing zone so as to prevent image degradation by accumulation of excess developer at the developing zone.

Abstract: In a two or three anti-reflection coating, a .lambda..degree./2 layer is replaced by a composite layer. The composite layer is characterized by a higher equivalent inhomogeneity .phi.' than the inhomogeneity .phi. of the .lambda..degree./2 layer.
Abstract: A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl, is prepared by condensing a compound of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.2 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and R.sup.1 is same as above, or a reactive derivative thereof with 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid or an ester thereof to give a compound of the formula: ##STR3## wherein R.sup.3 is an ester residue and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are same as above, followed by hydrolysis or ammonolysis of said compound (IV). The compound (I) is useful as a diagnostic or therapeutic agent for angiotensin-related hypertension.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the recovery of gas evolved from fermentation is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a vessel containing the fermentation material, and a head slidably mounted on the vessel forming a substantially gas tight chamber therewith. Mounted on the head are a series of projections of various shapes which extend into the chamber. As the fermentation proceeds, the generation of gas causes the head to rise. When it has risen a sufficient amount, a gas outlet valve is opened and the gas is introduced into a collector. The reduction in gas pressure causes the head to drop. The movement of the head causes the projections to break through the scum layer at the surface of the fermentation broth, thereby enhancing the reaction. In a preferred form of the device, the projections are so formed as to urge the scum towards the discharge means, thereby breaking and removing the scum without the use of any additional energy. A method for using the apparatus is also disclosed.
