  • Patent number: 6476707
Abstract: By using a two-part assembly of a rotary member (10) bearing one or more wipers (14) clipped on to a substrate member (1) bearing one or more tracks (3), subassemblies may be supplied which can be used by manufacturers of articles (20,21,22) in which it is desired to sense the angular position of one member (20) relative to another (22), but which are easy to install and reliable in use. The assembly provides substantial savings in terms of the number of individual components used, thus reducing manufacturing and assembly costs. Manufacturing costs may also be reduced by using track material as a bearing material, as both track and bearing may be applied simultaneously, e.g. by screen printing.

  • Patent number: 6460397
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process and device for determining the surface friction coefficients of bodies, in particular of catheters. In the invented process, the to-be-examined catheter (1) is pulled with a defined velocity through a gel-like viscoelastic substance (2) and the frictional force required therefor is measured. A defined pressure is applied to this viscoelastic substance in such a manner that a defined surface normal force acts on the catheter surface. By applying a given, defined pressure on the substance, the surface pressure on each area element of the catheter surface is precisely given and can be held constant. By holding the area to which pressure is applied constant, the entire acting normal force can also be held constant and the friction coefficient can be determined for any catheter diameter and for any catheter consistency. Determination of the friction coefficient is reproducible and only depends on the surface friction.

  • Patent number: 6458225
Abstract: The novel methods, apparatus and reworked rotary braking surface product, for example those exhibited on interior cylindrical braking surfaces of a cast iron brake drum, serve to replace manufacturing defects exhibiting residual tensile stresses and outwardly directed tool marks with smooth compressed braking surfaces in a final manufacturing stage. The plastically deformed surface shape with reduced roughness and surface irregularities furthermore presents improved braking strength above the yield point and approaching the ultimate material strength of the base drum material. An ultrasonic transducer drives individual freely moving impact elements of a set at frequencies up to 55 kHz into the braking surface to effect plastic deformation at surface and sub-surface layers.

  • Patent number: 6451668
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing calibration structures in semiconductor substrates in the manufacture of components, specifically micro-mechanical systems with integrated semiconductor electronic systems. In the method a first layer (3) is structured on a first substrate (4, 5, 6) to produce first areas (2) which are required for the function of the components. Moreover, second areas (1) are produced in the first layer (3), which represent the calibration structures. The second areas (1) present a refractive index different from the refractive index of adjoining areas. Subsequently, the first substrate (4, 5, 6) is joined with a second substrate (12) such that the first layer (3) will be enclosed between the two substrates. Then either the first or the second substrate is thinned down to a residual thickness. The substrate layer with this residual thickness constitutes, for instance, the membrane in a pressure sensor.

  • Patent number: 6449857
Abstract: An electronic inclinometer and a centrally controlled network of inclinometers are disclosed. A resistive or capacitive inclinometer sensor measures inclination in two orthogonal axes. Measuring electrodes can be provided on the exterior of a dielectric sensor cell isolated from a sensor fluid. In another embodiment, measuring electrodes comprise pins partially immersed in a cell fluid contained in a metal housing and reference electrodes are provided to compensate for temperature and electrochemical changes in the sensor. Sensor signals are converted to frequency signals that are processed by a microprocessor having a unique logical address and preferably having an external solid state memory. A plurality of inclinometers can be arranged in multiple logical branches to be centrally controlled. The controller operates the network in real time or in a programmable timed autonomous mode. Network data can be presented in a graphical 3D format using software provided on the controller.
