  • Patent number: 5893035
Abstract: In a mobile communication system comprising at least two base stations coupled to a common base station controller, each base station with which a particular mobile station is communicating sends its received frame quality message to the common base station controller. The base station controller combines the received messages to provide an improved estimate of the correct message and thus a correct power level for the forward link signal. Each base station preferably responds independently to error messages it receives from the mobile station and also sends the error message to the base station controller. After receiving power control commands from the base station controller, the base station then determines whether it responded properly at the time when it received the error message from the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5892916
Abstract: A system and method for network management, including a message handling process, having a network manager and at least one network element is described. The network management messaging system sends and receives multiple concurrent messages between the network element layer and the network management layer. Support of concurrent messaging greatly speeds and simplifies network management. A client request is received at a first managed object, at least part of the client request is fulfilled by a second managed object. A major row is created in response to receiving the client request, and a minor row associated with a managed object request sent to the second managed object. The minor row has an index that associates the minor row with the major row, and correlates a response to the managed object request with the client request.

  • Patent number: 5892774
Abstract: A subchannel within a CDMA signal is provided together with a system for receiving and decoding this subchannel. A message is transmitted over the subchannel by applying a sequence of phase rotations to the user data. A single subchannel message can be transmitted during each 1.25 ms segment of user data, resulting in a transmission rates of up to 800 messages per second over the subchannel. Each message corresponds to a fixed sequence of phases, called a phase codeword, used to rotate the user data each time that message is sent. When only two phase codewords are used, the effective data rate for the subchannel is 800 bits per second, but higher data rates may be achieved by increasing the number of codewords used by the subchannel. The subchannel may be decoded by correlating the user data with each of the possible phase codewords.

  • Patent number: 5884187
Abstract: A method and apparatus providing centralized power control in a multiple base station communication configuration. Each base station in a system operates to control both over the forward link power it transmits and the reverse link power from the remote units. A radio link manger provides a common threshold for determining the proper power level of the reverse link signal at each base station. The radio link manager also provides a ratio of the forward link signal strength to a pilot signal strength to control forward link power control. The radio link manager provides the threshold and the ratio uniformly to all base stations thus providing a uniform operating point for all base stations in a system and thus increasing capacity. The same centralized power control is easily expanded to provide a mechanism for intersystem soft handoff.

  • Patent number: 5884157
Abstract: An HLR Interface Facility (HIF) is disclosed which is disposed between the HLR and the different customer service data bases. The HIF resolves the two problems associated with the single HLR solution. It provides controlled access to the HLR, preventing secondary service providers from accessing or modifying each other's subscriber records. The HIF also offers interworking facilities, allowing to independently modify the interface into the HLR, and the new interface point between different customer service data bases and the HIF. Therefore, if a new feature is introduced in the MSC and only some of the secondary service providers wish to make use of it, only the interfaces between their customer service data bases and the HIF need modification while the other resellers need not change their own interfaces to the HIF.In addition, a means for interfacing the billing output of the MSC to the multiple billing centers is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5881053
Abstract: A conference calling system for a wireless communications channel. The system is adapted for use with a channel having first, second and third participants communicating via first, second and third transmitters and receivers respectively. The system includes a circuit for receiving an encoded signal from at least one of the transmitters. A second circuit determines which of the participants is speaking from the received encoded signal. A third circuit is provided for re-transmitting an encoded signal received from the speaking participant to the other participants. In the illustrative implementation, the encoded signals are variable rate speech vocoded signals in which speech is vocoded at full rate, silence is vocoded at 1/8th rate and the 1/2 and 1/4 rates are used as transitional rates. In the illustrative implementation, the speaker's signal is identified by examining the rate of the received vocoded signals.

  • Patent number: 5872775
Abstract: A system and method for determining the transmission rate of a data signal at a receiver of a variable rate communications system. A vocoder at a transmitter encodes a frame of data into symbols according to one of a set of discrete data rates. When the data rate is lower than the maximum, each symbol is repeated a number of times as required to achieve a constant number of symbols in each frame. The data signal is transmitted at a power proportional to the data rate of the frame. A reference signal is also transmitted. The reference signal is transmitted at a constant power. Further, the data signal has the same carrier frequency as a reference signal so that they exhibit the same fading characteristics as they are transmitted through the channel. At a receiver, the power of the data signal and the power of reference signal are measured as received.

  • Patent number: 5872774
Abstract: In the present invention, the slave base station attains synchronization with the reference base station through messages transmitted from and received by a mobile station in the soft handoff region between the reference base station and the slave base station. First, the round trip delay between the mobile station and the reference base station is measured by the reference base station. Once the mobile station acquires the signal from the slave base station, it measures and reports the difference between the amount of time it takes a signal to travel from the reference base station to it and the amount of time it takes a signal to travel from the slave base station to it. The last measurement necessary is a measurement by the slave base station of the time difference between the time it received the reverse link signal from the mobile and station the time it transmitted a signal to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5870674
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with geographic region of the subscriber station. The subscriber station first attempts to determine its geographic region. It does so by attempting to acquire a system which covers the region. Once the subscriber station has determined its geographic region, the subscriber station then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station registers with the acquired system. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system.

  • Patent number: 5867763
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for integrating a personal communication system with a cable television plant. A set of radio antenna devices (RAD) are connected to the cable plant. The RADs provide frequency conversion and power control of signal received from the cable plant for wireless transmission to the remote units. The RADs also provide power control and frequency conversion of wireless signals received from the remote units for transmission by the RADs onto the cable plant. In addition to the functions of standard base stations and centralized controller, the CATV base station must also compensate for gain variations in the cable plant. The downstream power control is regulated by a RAD reference signal which can be hidden within the CDMA signal for maximum efficiency. The upstream power control is regulated by an upstream gain reference signal which is individually transmitted by each RAD on the upstream link.

  • Patent number: 5867527
Abstract: An integrated search processor used in a modem for a spread spectrum communications system buffers receive samples and utilizes a time sliced transform processor operating on successive offsets from the buffer. The search processor autonomously steps through a search as configured by a microprocessor specified search parameter set, which can include the group of antennas to search over, the starting offset and width of the search window to search over, and the number of Walsh symbols to accumulate results at each offset. The search processor calculates the correlation energy at each offset, and presents a summary report of the best paths found in the search to use for demodulation element reassignment. The search is done in a linear fashion independent of the probability that a signal being searched for was transmitted at any given time.

  • Patent number: 5859838
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring and managing the loading conditions in a CDMA wireless communication system. The system comprises a load monitoring device such as a CDMA mobile station connected to a data logging and processing device such as a diagnostic monitor. The monitoring device is placed within the service area of a base station. The monitoring device periodically initiates a call, is assigned to a traffic channel normally, and logs a power control parameter such as mobile station transmit power or the number of closed-loop power control commands received per unit time. From this information, the load monitoring device can infer the real-time traffic loading conditions of the base station. If the loading of the system exceeds a predetermined threshold, an alarm may be sent to the system management center in order to take some action to limit additional loading on the base station.

  • Patent number: 5828661
Abstract: In a communications network, a remote unit communicates with another user via at least one base station. The network has a plurality of base stations controlled by a mobile switching center. Each base station of the plurality of base stations transmits an identifying pilot signal. To defining an area in which communication between a set of the base stations and the remote unit is forbidden, an auxiliary antenna transmits a silent region identifying pilot signal. The remote unit measures a signal strength of a set of identifying pilot signals corresponding to a neighbor set of base stations and measures a signal strength of the silent region identifying pilot signal. The remote unit sends a pilot strength measurement report to the mobile switching center via a first base station with which the remote unit has established communication.

  • Patent number: 5687163
Abstract: An efficient method and apparatus for determining, recording, and analyzing the phase history of a Line-in signal. The Line-in signal is coupled to a conventional demodulator. I and Q components are output by the conventional demodulator and coupled to an IQ quantizer. The IQ quantizer determines a quadrant on an I/Q plot from the amplitude of each component. A histogram is generated which indicates in which quadrant the Line-in signal was for a first sample, and in which quadrant the Line-in signal was for a second sample, the second sample having been taken immediately after the first sample. From this histogram, the number of times the Line-in signal transitions from one quadrant to another over a predetermined period of time is known.
