  • Patent number: 4340121
Abstract: A pneumatic motor for rock drills and the like having a reciprocating piston with valves at its opposite ends for valving motive air to the piston head from both ends of the cylinder. Large receivers are provided near the respective valves to accommodate availability of air on demand from the valves and to dampen pressure fluctuations. One of the receivers is connected to an external source of fluid under pressure; while the two receivers are interconnected by tubing external to the pneumatic motor itself. This permits the cylinder for the piston to comprise a simple tube provided with exhaust ports only. Additionally, exhaust air and oil from an air motor, which rotates the rock drill, are directed into the area between the lower end of the reciprocating piston and a striking bar for the drill rod to lubricate the reciprocating parts.

  • Patent number: 4338919
Abstract: A solar collector system including a particulate energy collecting medium for receiving solar energy. The medium cooperates with a solar collector which is adapted to expose the particulate energy collecting medium to solar energy. A heat exchanger permits transfer of the heat from the particulate energy collecting medium to another medium and transport means deliver the particulate energy collecting medium from the solar collector to the heat exchanger and subsequently returns it to the solar collector. An energy storage reservoir may be provided. In one embodiment a conveyor system transports the particulate energy collecting medium within a passageway system. The conveyor may be an endless cable having a plurality of conveyor elements having recesses for receipt of the particulate energy collecting medium.

  • Patent number: 4337853
Abstract: A cover for the body and a similar cover for the lid of a luggage case, each of which covers is made up of a number of pieces of sheet material pre-cut so that when the pieces are sewn together the cover assumes a three dimensional form which enables it to be manually fitted over the corresponding body shell and lid shell and fastened in close tight-fitting relation to the shell. The side panels are of relatively thin sheet material and the end areas are constituted by several parallel strips of relatively thick sheet material stitched together and also stitched in overlapping relation to the side panels. The edges of the end strips are sewn together so as to form a projecting rib surrounding the body and the lid for a pleasing appearance and for assuming wear and abrasion of the end of the luggage case. Overall weight of the luggage case is reduced by employing relatively thin sheet material for the major area of coverage and relatively thick sheet material only at the ends of the luggage case.

  • Patent number: 4334944
Abstract: The present invention provides a method to improve the rupture stability of polyurea foam materials to such a level that they can be applied on a commercial scale. This is achieved by incorporating 0.5 to 50 parts by weight of at least one alkanolamine having at least one amino group, one hydroxyl group and a molecular weight of from 47 to 2000 per 100 parts by weight of polyisocyanate used for the preparation of said polyurea foam materials. Preferably the foam material prepared is cut into pieces by cutting it in the rise direction, more particularly in the rise direction that is perpendicular to the machine direction of the foam, and subsequently crushing said pieces at least once.

  • Patent number: 4334798
Abstract: A hole in a road, airfield runway or in the ground is filled or partly filled by partly filling the hole with a plurality of separate bodies of concrete, rock or other solid material, and filling interstices between the separate bodies and wholly or partially filling the remaining space in the hole with a hardenable mixture of cold setting synthetic resin and filler, which hardenable mixture sets and bonds firmly to the surfaces of the separate bodies. Preferably, before the hardenable mixture is introduced, a flexible fluid--impermeable covering is applied over the partly-filled hole and is sealed to the surrounding ground surface to form a fluid-tight enclosure, and air is evacuated from the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 4330056
Abstract: A man crossover for belt conveyors used in underground mines, the conveyors comprising spaced groups of belt-supporting rollers connected along each side of the conveyor by cables, comprises a light-weight frame and deck spanning the conveyor belt and supported above the upper flight thereof on the side cables. The supporting member at each end of the man crossover rests on its cable and is contoured to fit over it. The supporting members are locked in place on the cables with removable fittings. The man crossover deck is provided with handrails on each side. A man using the man crossover grasps the handrails with both hands, leans over the man crossover on his stomach and pushes himself onto the deck with his feet. He pulls himself over by the handrails swinging his legs around to the other end, and slides off, feet first.

  • Patent number: 4330681
Abstract: Risk that metal particles carried by flowing oil in an oil-filled cable joint or termination will settle along an oil path between a cable conductor and the space bounded by the joint or termination enclosure is substantially reduced by making at least part, and preferably the whole, of the boundary wall of the path of a fibrous insulating material, e.g., paper, and by providing, at at least one end of the path, for filtering from flowing oil particles of metal and other undesirable materials that may be carried by the oil, filtering means comprising, in combination, electrically insulating filtering material and a fine metallic mesh, serving as an electrical screen. Fibres of the boundary wall so formed protrude into the path and restrict mobility of metal particles carried by the flowing oil; some metal particles will penetrate the fibrous insulating material which will also absorb from the oil some types of dissolved contamination, e.g., moisture.

  • Patent number: 4329203
Abstract: A heating system for tall horizontal slot type coke ovens wherein the heating walls are provided with flues in which combustion occurs at multiple levels. The improvement lies in having a single flue stack of two channel design, each channel having port openings located at corresponding different heights or levels above the flue floor. When lead gas is employed for fuel, lean gas and air are supplied from different regenerator chambers to the separate channels respectively whereby a mixture of fuel gas and air is effected and combustion occurs at the port exit openings at each successive level. When rich gas is employed as a fuel, both regenerator chambers are employed to supply air for combustion through both channels of the stack and rich fuel gas is supplied by a separate distribution system to each vertical flame flue. Regulation of the flow of rich gas or lean gas from the two channels is provided by an adjustable brick means, such as a slide brick at the top of the two channels.

  • Patent number: 4328002
Abstract: Methods of treating coal to remove sulfur and ash are provided which involve the steps of preconditioning coal particles in the presence of an aqueous solution of an oxidizing agent, washing said pretreated coal with water, contacting said coal with an aqueous solution of an oxidizing agent until an exothermic reaction between the coal and oxidizing agent peaks and the pH drops to the range of 2 to 3, removing the coal from the oxidizing agent, contacting the coal with a passivating agent until the temperature of the coal drops and the pH rises into the range 3 to 5, neutralizing the coal up to a pH of about 9, washing said coal with water and drying said coal.

  • Patent number: 4325532
Abstract: In a formwork system frames are mounted between horizontal supports. The support means on the frames are offset relative to the horizontal axis so that the inversion of the frames enables the level of the upper surface thereof to be adjusted. Thus the same components can be used to make a formwork for fine finish concrete or standard finish. In an alternative embodiment the support means on the horizontal support is offset so that the adjustment can be effected by reversing the support.
