  • Patent number: 4630482
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measurement of time required for an ultrasonic tone burst to traverse a medium from a transmitter to a receiver is disclosed. Two transducers separated by a distance through which a medium flows alternatively act as a transmitter and then a receiver of ultrasonic signals. After a signal has been emitted from the first ultrasonic transducer, the second transducer is electronically checked for receipt of the ultrasonic signal. That checking is done at certain time intervals, preferably 4 microseconds, over a selected period of time. Samples are taken over each time interval. For each sample time slot the presence and strength of an output signal is measured. An address in a memory is selected which corresponds to each sampling time slot. Each input sample is stored in memory at an address which corresponds to the time slot at which the input sample was taken.

  • Patent number: 4621911
Abstract: An optical microscope and a method are described wherein a luminescent specimen is located in, and illuminated by, a nodal standing wave field. Luminescence (fluorescence or phosphorescence) is excited in a series of parallel equispaced laminar antinodal zones separated by a series of dark nodal zones that span the specimen. By controlling the node spacing and phase of the standing wave field, a set of luminescence images of the specimen can be observed and recorded. Means can be provided for computing a three-dimensional distribution of light emitters within the specimen from this set of images.

  • Patent number: 4614223
Abstract: A method for adding reactive metals to steel being continuously cast to eliminate the problem of tundish nozzle plugging is provided by the steps of continuously casting molten steel through a tundish nozzle while introducing a reactive metal into the molten steel in a form and at a point either above or below the tundish nozzle such that high melting oxides and/or oxysulfides of the reactive metal are not formed in an amount sufficient to cause plugging in the nozzle before passing through the nozzle. A flux can be introduced with the alloy or subsequent to the alloy addition that can lower the melting point of the reactive products below the temperature of the steel going through the tundish nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4614101
Abstract: Multiple strands of metal slit from strip which varies in thickness from edge to center are separately coiled on the same mandrel into uniformly tight coils by selectively working the strands so as to reduce the thickness and elongate thicker strands more than thinner strands. The working is preferably accomplished by imparting reverse bends to the strands while tensioning them in amounts less than the tensile yield strength of the metal.
