  • Patent number: 4651733
Abstract: A surgical blood vessel holding device is described having shank means in a middle region with a holder on one end and a narrow prong on the other end. The prong is provided with a hook extending laterally from the side thereof. The prong is adapted to be inserted into the open end of a blood vessel until the hook reaches the distal end of the vessel. The hook then pierces the vessel wall, allowing the device to dispose the end of blood vessel in facing relationship with respect to an opening in the wall of another blood vessel. The blood vessel can be locked onto the hook. Thereupon, suturing of the vessels is initiated, but not completed. The prong is then unhooked and removed and the suturing process is completed without the device to provide a continuous blood flow path between the two blood vessels.

  • Patent number: 4637795
Abstract: Bulk materials containing volatile constituents are calcined in a two-stage process comprising a first heating stage at de-volatilizing temperature but below calcining temperature during which the material is turned over and mixed to accelerate its bulk heating rate without substantially accelerating local heating rate. The first heating stage is followed by a second heating stage at calcining temperature. A rotary hearth furnace adapted for the above process is divided into outer and inner connecting annular heating zones and has rabble means for turning over and mixing the charge in the outer zone and rabble means for transporting the charge through both zones.

  • Patent number: 4632702
Abstract: Metal powder of the desired composition having a particle size of -80 mesh is charged into an extrusion container, preferably a piece of carbon steel pipe, in successive layers about two inches thick. Each layer is compacted after deposition by a high energy rate forming ram so as to raise the tap density of the powder to about 80% of theoretical. An inner cover plate is then placed loosely on the compacted powder in the extrusion container, and is not attached to the container shell. On top of this inner plate is placed an outer cover plate which is welded to the container shell. Both plates are also of carbon steel, but are much thicker than the container wall. The container so prepared is heated in a heating furnace to a temperature below the melting temperature of the container and the powder alloy thus raising the density of the powder to about 90-93% of theoretical.

  • Patent number: 4631920
Abstract: A control drive is provided for the drive of a vehicle, whose steering is effected by a differential driving of the drive wheels of the two sides of the vehicle, where the drive wheels of each vehicle side are driven through a hydrostatic drive unit, whose final control element is connected with a servo piston capable of sliding in an operating cylinder and is acted upon from both sides, in which case the servo piston is acted upon from one side for controlling the travel speed and the control pressure determining the travel speed is reduced for effecting a turn on one side of the vehicle for large turning radii, and for smaller turning radii a pressure is additionally built up on the opposite side of the servo piston, the said pressure being derived from the control pressure determining the travel speed on the other side of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4630887
Abstract: An optical fibre ribbon structure suitable for use in an optical cable or other application where there is a risk that optical fibres will be subjected to a tensile force comprises a plurality of optical fibres and flexible reinforcing elements of resilient material arranged side by side and embedded in an elongate plastics body. Each resilient reinforcing element is set in such a form that the ribbon structure follows a path of smoothly curved undulations whose axes of curvature lie parallel to one another and normal to the longitudinal axis of the ribbon structure. When the undulting ribbon stucture is subjected to a tensile force, the ribbon structure straightens in a lengthwise direction against the action of the resilient reinforcing elements thereby reducing the tensile force otherwise applied to the optical fibres. When the tensile force is removed, the ribbon structure returns towards its original undulating form.
