  • Patent number: 4161384
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a heated end of a plastic pipe into a bell having a sealing groove therein arranged to receive a seal so that it may be sealingly joined with a plain end of a second pipe inserted therein. The apparatus comprises a mandrel base rigidly secured to a mandrel core having annular grooves formed thereabout communicating with a vacuum source through a passage formed in the core and base. A mandrel shell comprising four separable segments is secured on the core. The mandrel shell has a plurality of apertures formed therein communicating with the annular groove on the core such that a vacuum may be drawn through the apertures. A heated plastic pipe is forced over the mandrel shell until it engages a tapered shoulder formed on the mandrel base, thus forming a seal between the end of the pipe and the base. A vacuum is drawn on the cavity formed between the plastic pipe and the mandrel shell thus drawing the plastic pipe to the shell, forming an annular internal groove in the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4160163
Abstract: A flame sensing system according to the invention makes use of infra-red rays produced by resonant radiation of carbon dioxide in a flame and gives no wrong information due to discharge of thunder or sunlight and has high sensitivity with good S/N ratio. The flame sensing system is characterized in that when a ratio of an output of intensity of a first radiation produced by resonant radiation of carbon dioxide to an output of intensity of a second radiation having a wavelength located in the vicinity of the wavelength of said first radiation in the region of wavelength in which there is little absorption by the carbon dioxide in the air exceeds a predetermined value, difference in intensity between said first radiation and said second radiation is detected either by increasing the output of said first radiation or by decreasing the output of said second radiation thereby to give a warning.

  • Patent number: 4159892
Abstract: A method for preparation of the final film used for engraving a flat screen, belt screen or rotary screen for a printing machine. The final film is prepared from a photograph of the image to be reproduced and engraved by known techniques on a screen so as to provide a continuous repetitive pattern on the face of a pile fabric dyed in a continuous print dyeing process.Select areas of photographic images are montaged and put into a repeat pattern within a predetermined outline to establish the basic repeat. Four continuous tone color separations are made of the selected pattern to provide yellow, blue, red and black continuous tone negatives which represent the four colors of the original image. Each color separation is posterized and half toned to provide eight positive films. The films are selectively combined, blown up to the desired repeat size to provide a negative or positive which is used to prepare a flat bed screen or rotary screen for an otherwise conventional printing process.

  • Patent number: 4160164
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a flame sensing system utilizing infra-red rays by resonant radiation of carbon dioxide which system gives no erroneous information due to discharge of thunder, solar light or the like and has high sensitivity and S/N ratio. The flame sensing system according to the invention is characterized in that a flame is detected continuously for a short time in terms of difference in intensity between a first infra-red rays of a first wavelength produced by resonant radiation of carbon dioxide and a second infra-red rays of a wavelength located in the vicinity of said first wavelength in the region of wavelength in which there is little absorption by carbon dioxide in the air and then a warning device is actuated while the intensity of said second infra-red rays remains beyond a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 4156629
Abstract: Process and apparatus for cooling the wall of the vessel of a fast neutron reactor comprising a main vessel which surrounds a second vessel containing the core and separating a volume of liquid metal contained in the main vessel into two regions called the hot collector and the cold collector respectively. The liquid metal drawn into the cold collector and passed through the core to the hot collector is circulated by means of pumps distributed around the core. A baffle and a counter-baffle are arranged concentrically to the main vessel wall and respectively define a first and second annular space issuing into the cold collector. The first annular space is traversed by a tapped flow of cooling liquid metal circulating from bottom to top in the first space in contact with the main vessel wall up to an upper constant level adjacent to the edge of the baffle.

  • Patent number: 4153961
Abstract: Multiple strands of undyed yarn are fed continuously from supply spools or bobbins supported on a creel to a skein winding apparatus. The strands each pass along a substantially horizontal path through one or more spaced dyeing stations where they are engaged by an oscillating frame and caused to oscillate laterally back and forth from said paths while streams of dye individual to the yarns are continuously directed onto the yarns from a series of overhead tubes at the dyeing stations. The strands thus periodically interrupt the dye stream of the associated tubes and receive dye at a multiplicity of spaced portions along their lengths with intervening portions of the yarns remaining uncolored. The space dyeing can be varied by changing the speed of movement of the yarns, by varying the amplitude and speed of movement of yarn guide means which produces the lateral oscillation of the yarns and by selectively operating varying numbers of dye stream feeders at one or both dyeing stations.

  • Patent number: 4149417
Abstract: A distance measuring arrangement has an accelerometer transducer of the force balance type in which a switch closed by the action of an acceleration force causes a constant current to flow in a coil to oppose the force and open the switch. The switch opens and closes in a repetitive cycle at the resonant frequency of the system, the closed switch gating clock pulses to integration means. The transducer may take two forms. In the first the proportion of time that the switch is closed in each cycle is proportional to the acceleration value. Distance measurement comprises counting the clock pulses to effect a first stage of integration and summating the counter totals every 1000 clock pulses to give a distance travelled signal. In the second, the proportion of time that the switch is closed in each cycle is proportional to the square root of the acceleration value and distance measuring comprises counting the clock pulses to give a signal proportional to the square root of distance travelled.
