  • Patent number: 4112487
Abstract: Data processing apparatus includes a storage circuit or memory, and an addressing circuit for identifying word locations within the storage circuit into and from which a plurality of information items are to be written and read, respectively. Further, there is included an encoding circuit for encoding at least a part of each information item in one-out-of-n code, illustratively. In turn, the encoded part is successively shifted by a shift circuit so that it is stored in the storage circuit in a manner that the stored information in each word location has a bit order different from that order of any other information item as stored in the storage circuit. A translating or de-skewing circuit is provided for shifting the encoded data items as read out from the storage circuit in a direction opposite to that imparted by the first noted shift circuit.

  • Patent number: 4111276
Abstract: In a two-stage hovercraft skirt comprising an upper loop from which segments depend, operational movements of the skirt are effected by an adjusting tie extending at right angles and connected to generally radially directed ties by which the segments are secured to the hovercraft. By connecting the adjusting tie to the midpoint of the segment ties, holding the skirt against sympathetic movement with the adjusting tie and operating the latter by a lever system mechanically equivalent to the tie system the force required to cause movement of the skirt may be kept constant. Movements of the skirt may be used to cause or control rolling, pitching or heaving of the hovercraft.

  • Patent number: 4109153
Abstract: A source in which the neutron fluence can be varied makes use of a (.alpha.,n) reaction between a radioactive emitter in powdered form and a target in fluid form. The emitter is immersed in the target fluid between an upper and lower filter within a closed chamber. When the emitter rests on the lower filter in the quiescent state, radiation is limited by self-absorption and the source is in the state of minimum fluence. When the target fluid is circulated by means of a booster, the emitter is fluidized and maximum fluence is achieved. Variable intermediate values can be obtained by regulating the pressure and rate of circulation of the target fluid.

  • Patent number: 4104718
Abstract: An arrangement for sharing file information among plural processes in a multiprogrammed computing system. Source program file declarations are compiled into file control structures which are placed in skeletal segments, the segments forming units of potential sharing between active processes. Those segments which contain file control structures are placed in either the address space of (1) all processes, (2) related processes, or (3) a single process, depending upon the declared sharing level of the file. Job control language (JCL) commmands are expanded into JCL file control structures and merged with the source language structures to form a file request control structure. This request may be compared against a catalog of existing external files, a check being made to insure that the account on whose behalf a computing job is requesting file assignment is authorized to obtain the requested access to the file.

  • Patent number: 4103099
Abstract: Impregnation of a porous carbon body involving deposition of carbon from a as can be effected by establishing a thermal gradient across the body such that carbon is deposited at a boundary which advances through the body. The present furnace is for use in such a process and comprises a heater element with which, in use, the body is in contact and a cooled surface facing the element, characterized in that the latter surface is covered with a layer of thermal insulating material to reduce the thermal gradient across the body. This improves the economy of the process. The insulating material is suitably fibrous, eg graphite felt, and is protected by a layer of relatively low permeability, eg graphite sheet, to prevent deposition of carbon which would reduce its insulation properties.
