  • Patent number: 6449507
Abstract: A method of performing a medical procedure, such as surgery, is provided. A nerve is stimulated in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a first condition, such as a stopped or slowed condition. The medical procedure is performed on the heart or another organ. The stimulation of the nerve is stopped in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a second condition, such as a beating condition. The heart itself may also be stimulated to a beating condition, such as by pacing. The stimulation of the nerve may be continued in order to allow the medical procedure to be continued. Systems and devices for performing the medical procedure are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6420994
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for determining location information corresponding to a volume in space (VIS) that is occupied by a selected target from a remote observation platform through the process of collecting an identification signal from a source at or near the selected target and associating VIS location information data with that signal to identify location information corresponding to the VIS occupied by the target.

  • Patent number: 6418014
Abstract: The invention pertains to an anti-theft locking system that can be applied to a wide variety of electronic components. The locking system incorporates a locking assembly that is installed through a locking passage provided within each electronic component to be protected. The housings of each component and the internal circuitry are provided with the locking passage so that any attempt to remove the locking assembly will result with destruction of the internal components and the housing, making the item attempted to be stolen worthless.

  • Patent number: 6411370
Abstract: An optical system for measuring distance and for range-finding is provided. This single beam system uses a polarization selector and a retardation plate to take advantage of the polarization properties of light from a transmit source and of light reflected to a receiver. Another embodiment of the system uses the properties of certain types of transmit sources to further reduce the dimensions of the system. Methods for using the system are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6356147
Abstract: Dual amplifying circuits having a magnetic tunnel junction device and a field effect transistor configured in a complementing set are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the field effect transistor is operable to control a current level of a current operating signal flowing through the magnetic tunnel junction device. In another embodiment, the magnetic tunnel junction device is operable to control a voltage level of a voltage signal being applied to a gate terminal of the field effect transistor. The gain-bandwidth product of both embodiments is greater than the individual gain-bandwidth products of the individual devices through the elimination of noise contributing resistive type circuit elements.

  • Patent number: 6352544
Abstract: The present invention relates to devices and methods for removing veins in a venous system of a patient. One device for removing undesired veins includes an elongated member having first and second lumens extending longitudinally therein. The first lumen extends from the proximal end of the elongated member to a first opening at the distal end of the member. The second lumen extends from the proximal end of the elongated member to a second opening in the side of the elongated member. The proximal end of the elongated body is coupled to a connector having two separate tubes that communicate with the respective first and second lumen for the injection and removal of fluid. A vein attachment member, attached to the elongated member, is adapted to be secured to the vein.
