  • Patent number: 8050911
Abstract: A system, method, apparatus, signal-bearing medium, and means for transmitting speech activity in a distributed voice recognition (VR) system. The distributed voice recognition system includes a local VR engine in a subscriber unit (102) and a server VR engine on a server (160). The local VR engine comprises a voice activity detection (VAD) module (106) that detects voice activity within a speech signal, and comprises an advanced feature extraction (AFE) module (104) that extracts features from a speech signal. The detected voice activity information is transmitted over a first wireless communication channel to the server (160). The feature extraction information is transmitted over a second wireless communication channel, separate from the first wireless communication channel, to the server (160). The server (160) processes the received information to determine a linguistic estimate of the electrical speech signal, and transmits the linguistic estimate to the subscriber unit (102).

  • Patent number: 7715822
Abstract: A mutual authentication method is provided for securely agreeing application-security keys with mobile terminals supporting legacy Subscriber Identity Modules (e.g., GSM SIM and CDMA2000 R-UIM, which do not support 3G AKA mechanisms). A challenge-response key exchange is implemented between a bootstrapping server function (BSF) and mobile terminal (MT). The BSF generates an authentication challenge and sends it to the MT under a server-authenticated public key mechanism. The MT receives the challenge and determines whether it originates from the BSF based on a bootstrapping server certificate. The MT formulates a response to the authentication challenge based on keys derived from the authentication challenge and a pre-shared secret key. The BSF receives the authentication response and verifies whether it originates from the MT.

  • Patent number: 7577256
Abstract: A method for protecting traffic in a radio access network connected to at least two core networks. The method comprises maintaining a core-network-specific authentication protocol and a radio-bearer-specific ciphering process, and generating, for each ciphering process, a count parameter comprising a cyclical sequence number and a hyperframe number (HFN) which is incremented each time the cyclical sequence number completes one cycle. For each core network or authentication protocol, a first radio bearer of a session is initialized with a HFN exceeding the highest HFN used during the previous session. When a new radio bearer is established, the mobile station selects the highest HFN used during the session for the core network in question, increments it and uses it for initializing the count parameter for the new radio bearer. At the end of a session, the mobile station stores at least part of the highest HFN used during the session.

  • Patent number: 7006036
Abstract: A system for maintaining time in a satellite positioning system (SPS) receiver that relies on almanac data to maintain a reasonably accurate time. The approximate time based on almanac data is sufficiently accurate to bound the unknown parameters when a request for position is received. The receiver may automatically update the internal time and/or position. When a time update is required, the approximate time based on almanac data is sufficiently accurate that the receiver need only acquire the code phase from the satellites and can internally determine the code period into the bit and the bit into the week based on the almanac data.

  • Patent number: 6975868
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for maximizing throughput of a data call in a wireless communication system in which data is transmitted from a wireless station, such as a mobile station, on multiple assigned channels in accordance with a known transmission standard, such as IS-95B. The multiple assigned channels include a fundamental channel and at least one supplemental channel. Data is formatted into variable rate data frames and transmitted on the fundamental channel and the supplemental channel. A wireless receiver, such as a base station, receives the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver demodulates and decodes data frames associated with each of the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver determines a likely initial data rate for each demodulated and decode data frame.

  • Patent number: 6829485
Abstract: A system determines if a primary paging channel should be received based on an examination of a quick paging channel. A first QPCH symbol is examined (102) and the normalized pilot energy is determined (104). If the normalized pilot energy is above a first threshold (106), the symbol is demodulated and the QPCH-symbol-to-pilot-energy ratio is determined (110) and compared against another threshold (112). If the normalized pilot energy is below the first threshold, the system proceeds to the second QPCH symbol immediately. Depending on the resulting values, a second QPCH signal is examined (108), the system sleeps (114), or the system decides (116) to process the primary paging channel directly (118). If the second signal is demodulated, and if its normalized pilot energy is high enough, it also is demodulated and the ratio of the sum-of-the-combined-QPCH-symbols to the sum-of-the-combined-pilot-energies is determined (122).

  • Patent number: 6822952
Abstract: Techniques for maintaining packet data connectivity in a wireless communications network are presented. A mobile station detects a change from a first packet control function (PCF) to a second PCF. The first PCF is connected to a first packet data service node (PDSN). The second PCF is connected to a second PDSN. The mobile station consults a database configured to map at least one previously visited PCF to a servicing PDSN. Based at least in part on the consulting, the mobile station observes one from among a plurality of predetermined origination patterns, wherein an origination pattern defines origination functions to be performed by the mobile station. As such, zombie PPP and mobile IP instances may be detected and handled.

  • Patent number: 6819660
Abstract: In one disclosed embodiment, a mobile unit receives an assigned reverse supplemental channel data rate, for example, as part of a supplemental channel assignment from a base station to the mobile unit in a cdma spread spectrum communication system. The mobile unit utilizes a profiling table to determine a maximum feasible reverse supplemental channel data rate corresponding to a given forward supplemental channel data rate. For example, the profiling table can be constructed by testing the mobile unit to determine what combinations of forward and reverse supplemental channel data rates and operating conditions cause the mobile unit's processor to “crash”. The mobile unit communicates data over the reverse supplemental channel at a data rate which does not exceed the maximum feasible reverse supplemental channel data rate, for example, by constructing service data units using filler to lower the communication data rate below the maximum feasible reverse supplemental channel data rate.
