  • Patent number: 5105154
Abstract: A cylindrical core sample of a subterranean formation is place into a sleeve under confining pressure. At least one electrode array extends through the sleeve and makes contact with the core sample. The array is in a plane normal to the core sample and has an even number of electrodes equally spaced about the sleeve. A current is passed through the core sample and voltages are measured across each pair of electrodes that are spaced 180.degree. apart around the sleeve. Such measurements are utilized to identify the radial direction of any electrical anisotropy in the core sample, particularly under differing fluid saturation conditions.

  • Patent number: 5105042
Abstract: There is provided a sulfated layered titanium oxide catalyst. Relatively long chain alkyl aromatic compounds are prepared by alkylating an alkylatable aromatic compound with a relatively long chain alkylating agent under alkylation reaction conditions in the presence of this sulfated layered material as alkylation catalyst. The layered material contains titanium oxide in the layers and oxide pillars separating the layers. The alkylation activity of the catalyst is increased by including sulfate ions in the layered material. This increased alkylation activity may be obtained by contacting the layered material with an aqueous solution of a sulfate compound such as sulfuric acid.

  • Patent number: 5104579
Abstract: It has now been discovered that oligomers of C.sub.6 - C.sub.20 alpha-olefins, such as 1-decene, with branch ratios below 0.19 and high viscosity indices (HVI) can be functionalized to provide unique phosphite derivatives. Functionalized polyalpha-olefin lubricants compositions are prepared with superior properties by adding functionalized organophosphites to the olefinic bond of HVI-PAO. The invention encompasses a process for the preparation of lubricant range hydrocarbons containing phosphonate functional groups, comprising;reacting olefinic C.sub.20 + polyalpha-olefin oligomers having a branch ratio of less than 0.19 and phosphite ester in a mixture with peroxide catalyst at elevated temperature whereby phosphite ester adduct of said polyalpha-olefin is formed;separating said reaction mixture products and recovering said adduct.

  • Patent number: 5103907
Abstract: A method for controlling the profile of a formation where temperatures higher than 400 degress F. are encountered. An aqueous solution of potassium silicate is injected into a zone of greater permeability in a formation. Afterwards, an alcoholic solution of hydrated calcium chloride is injected into the greater permeability zone. Calcium silicate is formed in-situ thereby substantially reducing the permeability of the higher permeability zone. Thereafter, a steam-flooding or fire-flooding operation is commenced in a lower permeability zone.

  • Patent number: 5102955
Abstract: There is disclosed a low density polymer having a broad molecular weight distribution, such that its melt flow ratio (MFR) is about 50 to about 250, and a substantially constant melt index-corrected density. The polymer, produced e.g., by blending a first polymer component of high molecular weight with a second polymer component of low molecular weight, with both polymer components having substantially the same melt index-corrected density, produces films having improved strength properties and low hexane extractables, as compared to films made from comparable individual polymer components. There is also disclosed a low density polymer, also having MFR of about 50 to about 250, having substantially no polymer chains having low molecular weight and short chain branches, which is prepared by blending a first polymer component of low density and high molecular weight with a second polymer component of relatively high density and relatively low molecular weight.

  • Patent number: 5102428
Abstract: A process is disclosed for integrating etherification to produce diisopropyl ether (DIPE) with processes to convert oxygenates and hydrocarbons to gasoline boiling range hydrocarbons in a manner which eliminates the requirement to recycle unreacted C.sub.3 hydrocarbons to the DIPE etherification zone. In the novel integrated process the unreacted C.sub.3 hydrocarbons are separated as vapor and passed to a conversion zone in contact with acidic metallosilicate catalyst. Depending on the conversion conditions the unreacted C.sub.3 hydrocarbons are converted to gasoline, distillate and/or aromatics, preferably in conjunction with additional feedstock containing lower oxygenates, olefins or paraffins. Also, isopropanol (IPA) and minor by-product dimers and trimers of propene from the DIPE reaction are separated and passed as a feedstream to the oxygenates and hydrocarbon conversion zone.

  • Patent number: 5103428
Abstract: A method and apparatus for laboratory simulation of the dynamic formation of sand arches in production of oil and/or gas from unconsolidated or poorly consolidated wells is disclosed. An ultrasonic transducer is disposed opposite a perforation in a member simulating the casing of a well and the simulated well is operated at conditions approximating those of interest in the field. The acoustic transducer is moved incrementally across the perforation and measurements of the distance between the transducer and the formation are measured. These can then be used to generate a profile of the surface of the formation behind the perforation. Preferably, an ultrasonic transducer which emits a focussed beam of acoustic energy is employed.

  • Patent number: 5101901
Abstract: A method for forming a gravel pack in a washed-out interval is provided where a borehole penetrates an unconsolidated or loosely consolidated oil or gas reservoir which is likely to introduce substantial amounts of sand into the borehole. After perforating the borehole's casing at a washed-out interval of the formation, sand is introduced into the interval. Afterwards, an aqueous solution of potassium silicate is injected into said interval. Thereafter, an alcoholic solution of hydrated calcium chloride is injected into the interval. A permeability retaining calcium silicate cement is formed in the interval thereby making a gravel pack. Injection of the potassium silicate and hydrated calcium chloride solutions is continued until the porosity of the interval has been reduced by the calcium silicate cement to an extent sufficient to exclude formation fines and sand.

  • Patent number: 5100535
Abstract: Nitrogenous compounds especially bases such as amines are used to control the operation of a hydrocracker. Catalyst activity and selectivity may be controlled by addition of the base to the feed, for example, to control the balance between isomerization and conversion in an operation using a zeolite beta catalyst. Runaway conditions may be controlled by the addition of nitrogenous compounds and if they are added at intermediate points along the length of the reactor, the temperature profile within the reactor can be effectively regulated.
