  • Patent number: 5088555
Abstract: A sand consolidation method is provided for use in a borehole having an unconsolidated or loosely consolidated oil or gas reservoir which is likely to introduce substantial amounts of sand into the borehole and cause caving. After perforating the borehole's casing at an interval of the formation where sand will be produced, an aqueous solution of potassium silicate is injected into said interval. Thereafter, an alcoholic solution of hydrated calcium chloride is injected into the interval. A permeability retaining calcium silicate cement is formed in the interval. Injection of the potassium silicate and hydrated calcium chloride solutions is continued until the interval has been consolidated by the calcium silicate cement to an extent sufficient to prevent sand migration and thereby prevent caving.

  • Patent number: 5089150
Abstract: A novel method of injecting or squeezing a cross-linked scale inhibitor down a well into a subterranean formation which significantly lengthens its effective life is accomplished by cross-linking a carboxylic acid-containing polymeric or organophosphorus-containing inhibitor with a polyalcohol. The significant extension of life afforded by cross-linking with a polyalcohol improves the overall economics of oil production in fields prone to mineral scale.

  • Patent number: 5086643
Abstract: A system and method for determining multi-phase relative permeability characteristics of a porous media sample obtained from a subterranean reservoir. The porous media is placed in a confining flow cell assembly and the pressure drop across the porous media is measured during multi-phase fluid flooding. A computed tomography (CT) scanning system provides images of the density distribution within the core sample. Fluid saturation is determined from these CT images as well as from material balance and pressure drop data to determine the relative permeability of the subterranean reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5086956
Abstract: A food storage container for dry or liquid foods and other open air perishable products provides a leak-resistant seal when the lid is in a closed position and easy pouring of contents when in the open position. The container is easy to open, employing rocker points to allow for a rocking action effective to release the lid from a closed position when a downward force is exerted upon an upper surface of the lid thereby providing an effective opening for pouring. A leak-resistant seal is achieved through the use of a plug section of the lid having a continuous outer peripheral surface which effects a close conforming fit with a similarly positioned surface area on the container body in a continuous and positive manner.

  • Patent number: 5087371
Abstract: Barium sulfate scale is dissolved by contacting the scale with an aqueous solvent having a pH of about 8 to about 14, containing a chelating agent comprising a polyaminopolycarboxylic acid or salt of such an acid, and a synergist anion. The aqueous solvent containing the dissolved scale is regenerated by first acidifying the aqueous solvent sufficiently to generate free alkaline earth metal ions. The aqueous solvent is then mixed with a liquid membrane emulsion enveloped around droplets of an internal aqueous phase containing an anion that forms an insoluble precipitate with the free alkaline earth metal ions. The scale-free aqueous solvent is separated from the emulsion by gravity and recovered for reuse. In another embodiment, the internal aqueous phase may contain a chelating agent to remove the free alkaline earth metal ions by forming a stable complex with the ions.

  • Patent number: 5087782
Abstract: The disclosure reveals that aromatic structures can be introduced into the molecular structure of polyalpha-olefin lubricant oligomers by subjecting the polyalpha-olefin to a dehydrocyclization reaction which converts a portion of the pendant or branching alkyl groups in the recurring polymeric unit of PAO to aromatic structures. When the starting material for dehydrocyclization is PAO prepared by oligomerization of C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alpha-olefins in contact with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on porous support the dehydrocyclization reaction produces a lubricant oligomer with increased aromaticity without significantly degrading the viscometric properties of the feedstock lubricant, particularly the high VI of the starting material. The aromatic structures introduced lend increased thermal stability, wear resistance and solubilizing characteristics to the liquid lubricant oligomers so modified.

  • Patent number: 5085762
Abstract: Emission of noxious nitrogen oxides with the flue gas from the regenerator of a fluid catalytic cracking plant are reduced by incorporating into the circulating inventory of cracking catalyst separate additive particles that contain a copper-loaded zeolite material having a characteristic structure with a defined X-ray diffraction pattern. The preferred material of this type is zeolite MCM-22. The copper may be exchanged onto the zeolite or impregnated into the catalyst. In addition, the catalyst may include titanium or zirconium to provide stability and further improvements in stability may be obtained with the addition of rareearth metal cations, especially cerium or yttrium. NOX and CO emissions from the regenerator are reduced, and the gasoline produced in the unit may have an improved octane number.
