  • Patent number: 6341171
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scanning and storing an optical representation of a finger's papillary lines reduces the amount of information for storing in memory by eliminating gray scale regions of the image. An image of the finger's papillary lines is created by a scanning device. The image is then converted to an electrical signal and filtered to reduce the image's resolution. The resulting pattern is then converted to n bytes of digital information. A processor then selects y byte sequences, each byte sequence having m bytes, wherein the product of m and y is less than n. The selected byte sequences are stored such that when the byte sequences are detected out of the n bytes, the identity of the individual is confirmed.

  • Patent number: 6332094
Abstract: A heartbeat rate monitor that uses a sensor to detect a person's heartbeats and circuitry for providing pulses indicative of these heartbeats. A transmitter wirelessly transmits these pulses, along with an identification (ID) signal, to a receiver. The ID signal identifies the transmitter and can be pulses providing a code. In the receiver, a circuit uses the ID signal to determine if the received pulses are from the transmitter. If they are from the transmitter, the pulses representing heartbeats are used to calculate hearbeat rate. Any received signal from a source other than the transmitter is rejected in the receiver. If there is transmission interference, the monitor can calculate an approximate heartbeat rate. The frequency over which wireless transmission occurs can be changed by the person, or automatically by the monitor.

  • Patent number: 6330456
Abstract: Mobile stations in communication with several base stations in a cellular CDMA system (as when undergoing soft handoff) do not use the conventional “or of the downs” rule for assessing power control commands from base stations. Mobile stations assess the link quality of the links from the base station. If any base station displays link quality above a predetermined threshold and if that base station is requesting power reduction, power is reduced by a predetermined amount, delta. Otherwise, power is adjusted up or down by an amount less than or equal to delta according to the received power control signals from each base station in conjunction with a weight determined from the signal quality of the link from each base station.

  • Patent number: 6330316
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for determining whether a CPS should employ a standard interface or an unreliable network for routing telephone calls. The invention includes a telephone call switching apparatus which includes a routing engine configured to receive a telephone call from a terminal connected to the call switching apparatus and a switching matrix connected thereto. The telephone call includes a destination code. The routing engine is configured to receive the telephone call from a terminal or trunk line, determine an unreliable network route for the telephone call based upon the destination code, and provide a message to a call manager associated with the unreliable network route (via the switching matrix). The message includes the destination code. The routing engine is also configured to receive a response from the call manager; and route the call over the unreliable route if the response is affirmative.

  • Patent number: 6324953
Abstract: A device for forming a cutting blade for prints is disclosed. The device of this invention forms cutting blades by appropriately bending and cutting a metal strip into desired blades through integrated work regardless of a difference in the size of metal strips. The device is also provided with changeable jigs, thus being capable of forming bridge notches having different intervals, widths and configurations. The device has one vertically movable bending pin and one swing cutter. The bending pin is capable of quickly bending a metal strip into a desired configuration, while the swing cutter finely and precisely cuts the metal strip into cutting blades. The device also quickly produces high precision cutting blades, thus improving productivity and reducing the cost of the cutting blades.

  • Patent number: 6320898
Abstract: A CDMA base station servicing a plurality of mobile stations in a plurality of sectors monitors the reverse-link signal strength received by each antenna for each mobile station, and accordingly determines an optimum combination of antennas for forward-link transmission to each mobile station, whereby transmission to each mobile station may be accomplished with lower power, and whereby the dropped-call rate is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6317422
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating spreading codes in a CDMA system are disclosed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention wherein the system includes a pseudonoise (PN) code generator and a logic device configured to replace a portion of a PN code generated by the PN code generator with at least one zero or to add at least one zero to a PN code generated by the PN code generator. The PN code generator generates a PN code made up of chips. One or more of these chips may be replaced by zeros or one or more zeros may be inserted between chips. Thus, when combined at a chip level with a substantially orthogonal code such as a Walsh code the resulting spreading code will be less effected and in some instances not effected at all by certain time delays inserted into the system (i.e time lag from multi-path dispersive transmissions).

  • Patent number: 6311070
Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for controlling transmission power of a mobile unit in a wireless communication system which minimizes transmission power overshoot caused by counteracting the effects of deep fading. The power control bits are received by the mobile unit then examined on an individual basis and also as a block of bits. Initially, each time a request to increase power is received the mobile unit increases the transmission power by 1 dB. When the mobile unit determines that a predetermined number of bits in a block each indicates a request to increase power is received the mobile unit increases the transmission power by 2 dB. After the block of increase requests, if the mobile receives a request to decrease the transmission power it increases the transmission power by 2 dB, then decreases the transmission power for the next two power control periods by 3 dB each.
