Patent number: 4868121Abstract: A method of producing intact islets of Langerhans in an insulin producing condition uses a mixture of Hank's solution and 10% by volume fetal calf serum to ductally distend the human pancreas. The exocrine tissue of the pancreas is digested at about 37.degree. C. by an enzyme preparation of collagenase, trypsin and proteolytic enzyme present in the mixture at a level of about 0.2% by weight. The digestion is monitored at regular intervals during the process. The digested pancreas is comminuted, filtered and intact islets of Langerhans are recovered. The recovered islets retain their insulin producing properties.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1985Date of Patent: September 19, 1989Assignees: McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Washington UniversityInventors: David W. Patent number: 4859983Abstract: A traffic barricade of the A-frame type constructed of a lightweight material such as plastic to have a forbidding appearance. The barricade members are unitarily constructed to be interchangeable and with integral hinge mechanisms. The hinge mechanisms have detenting elements for improving the resistance to winds tending to cause the closure of the "A" stance of the barricade. The barricade permits a damaged hinge element to be readily replaced. Ballast may be added to a storage compartment arranged adjacent the supporting surface for the barricade. The design of the plastic barricade permits a warning light to be directly secured by a mounting bolt functioning as a hinge pin. The individual barricade members may be stacked with substantially no relative movement of the stacked members.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1988Date of Patent: August 22, 1989Assignee: Signal, Inc.Inventors: Jack H. Kulp, Carl L. Erwin

Patent number: 4859087Abstract: A journal bearing block (10) has opposed sides (62, 63) received in sliding relation between the opposed sides defined by gibs (14, 16) of a slot (18) of a printing press sideframe (12). One of the gibs (14) has an elongate groove (54) and one of the bearing block sides (62) has an adjacent elongate groove (74). A key (86) is received by the bearing block groove (64) and includes an outstanding portion (90) extending into the gib groove. The key includes a threaded opening (70) and is connected to the bearing block by a rotatable adjustment screw (74). The key is narrower than the bearing block groove but substantially the same thickness as the gib groove, whereby rotation of the adjustment screw causes the key to travel laterally in the bearing block groove with the result that the bearing block, with its rotary die journal travels laterally relative to the sideframe (12).Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1988Date of Patent: August 22, 1989Assignee: Allied Gear and Machine Co., Inc.Inventor: Larry J. Patent number: 4852364Abstract: This expansion valve includes a valve body providing an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber separated by a compound valve. The compound valve includes a check valve seat defining a valve port receiving a check valve element and the check valve element includes a control valve port receiving a control valve element. During normal refrigerant flow conditions when the pressure in the inlet chamber is greater than the pressure in the outlet chamber, the check valve remains seated while the control valve element meters refrigerant flow between the two chambers. During reverse refrigerant flow, when the pressure in the inlet chamber is less than the pressure in the outlet chamber, the check valve is urged away from the check valve seat to provide for relatively unrestricted refrigerant flow between the two chambers.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1987Date of Patent: August 1, 1989Assignee: Sporlan Valve CompanyInventors: G. Patent number: 4819952Abstract: In a sealing and wiper arrangement, a sealing ring (5), which may also serve a wiper function, and a stressing ring arrangement (6) are accommodated in a groove (4) of a first machine part (1). The stressing ring arrangement (6) is positioned between the sealing ring (5) and the base of the groove and urges the sealing ring against the surface of a second machine part (2) which is capable of a movement relative to the first machine part (1), in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the groove (4). The sealing ring (5) is in contact with a second machine part (2) by a wiper web (8) and an edge (11) provided on its high-pressure side. The edges (10, 11) provided on the sealing ring (5) are loaded independently of each other. This is achieved by giving the stressing ring arrangement (6) the form of two separate portions of a stressing ring. In one embodiment two completely separate stressing rings (61, 62) are provided. In another embodiment a Quad-ring (40) is provided.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1988Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: Busak + Luyken GmbH & Co.Inventor: Roy Edlund

Patent number: 4807820Abstract: A coal crusher roll includes a smooth tubular cylindrical back-up roll having a series of regularly spaced tapped radial holes to receive bolts by which eight identical shell segments may be fastened on the back-up roll. The holes at the axial ends of the segments are undercut to provide a rabbet into which fits the tang of a special lifting hook by which the segment can be easily handled by a lightweight crane. A recess in the central part of the segment defined by a peripheral berm around the backside of the segment reduces the weight of the segment, provides a place for receiving balancing weights, and simplifies the face fit machining for the segment with the back-up roll.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1986Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: T.J.
