  • Patent number: 6607394
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for hot-pluggable electronic component connection. In one embodiment of the present invention, ground and power line couplings with a system are formed by moving the component in one direction while signal line couplings with the system are formed by moving the component in another direction. In one embodiment, a guide rail system causes a hot-pluggable component to move in a direction which couples, first, the ground line and, then, the power lines to the system. After the ground and power lines are connected, the guide rail system causes the component to move in another direction which couples the signal lines to the system. In another embodiment, a latching mechanism holds the component in place once the signal lines are coupled to the system. In this embodiment, an ejection system releases the latching mechanism and allows removal of the component.

  • Patent number: 6606287
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for compression rate selection. One embodiment of the present invention automatically selects a compression rate for a media signal. The embodiment determines an optimal compression rate for a media signal, compresses the signal at that rate, and stores the signal for later playback. An optimal compression rate is one which stores the media signal in the least amount of storage space without unacceptably degrading the media signal. One embodiment uses information about the media signal to determine a compression rate. In one embodiment, the information is automatically generated. One embodiment automatically generates the information using meta-information (e.g., channel, genre, etc.). Another embodiment automatically generates information using natural language parsing of a media signal description. In another embodiment, the information is generated through manual entry.

  • Patent number: 6602169
Abstract: A method of assembly, tightening and locking fixed weight dumbbells and barbells which is commonly provided with weight plates whether individual or one piece styles, a handle or bar with or without an end plate and a locking female member to retain plate(s) to the handle or the bar. The locking member consists of a spring steel oblong threaded insert that can be installed in any shape body i.e. hex, square, round etc. The insert threads over a threaded handle or bar and retains the plates in different size weight configurations. The threaded insert goes on under light hand tool pressure and conforms to the threaded handle or bar. Once applied pressure ceases it locks into position. It may be adjusted as needed and will riot loosen under shock or vibration. It will lock wherever it is left and is considered tension adjustable. It will adapt to wear and may be tightened or loosened as many times as the circumstances require.

  • Patent number: 6604203
Abstract: An arrangement and a method for synchronizing data to a local clock. The invention incorporates a self-tested self-synchronous two-phase input port, wherein a line or an element of parallel data is tested for data read failure using two different phases or edges of the local clock. If a data read failure is detected using one phase, the other of the two phases is selected for reading the data. The arrangement includes a data read device for reading parallel elements of the data stream using one of two different phases or edges of the local clock, a data read error detecting device arranged to sample at least one element of the data stream using the two different phases or edges of the local clock, and a decision making device.

  • Patent number: 6602251
Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for treating a uterine disorder which receive its blood supply from a uterine artery. In particular, uterine fibroids are effectively treated by occluding the uterine arteries using trans-vaginal, trans-uterine, transrectal, or retroperitoneal approaches. The devices and methods are advantageous because the inventive procedures may be performed by a patient's gynecologist in the course of treatment, avoiding the need for referrals to specialist practitioners and for more radical treatments, such as hysterectomies. The methods include both temporary and permanent occlusion of the arteries. A cannula carries an imaging device and a member which will easily penetrate tissue, the member including a device which partially or completely, and temporarily or permanently, occludes a uterine artery.

  • Patent number: 6594912
Abstract: Disclosed are electronic plumb indicators for monopoles, survey poles, global positioning antennas and the like. A exemplary plumb indicator comprises a substrate, a plumb bob suspended by a thread (e.g., wire, cable, string, etc.) and disposed over a first surface of the substrate, and a probe. The substrate has an array of conductive pads disposed over its first surface, preferably in a regular pattern. The probe has a first body portion held by the plumb bob but allowed to move freely in the vertical direction, and a conductive tip disposed between the plumb bob and the first surface of the substrate. The probe tip makes contact with the first surface of the substrate, and contacts one or more pads in normal operation. The pads may be scanned electronically to determine the location of the probe tip and plumb bob with respect to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6580065
Abstract: A light diverting channel for use in a scanner. The channel is incorporated into the cover of a flat bed scanner and transmits light from the lamps positioned longitudinally along the scanner, up through the side of the channel, and through a central region or sheet of the channel, and then down through objects to be scanned. The light diverting channel thereby more efficiently uses the light generated by the lamps and more evenly disburses the light over and through the object to be scanned.

  • Patent number: 6572907
Abstract: A method for drying nuts that includes removing, acids, particularly tannins, and stopping enzymatic activity within the nut prior to drying provides a novel approach to processing nuts that has many useful characteristics. In one embodiment, walnuts are first blanched in water for 3 to 5 minutes to remove acids and stop enzymatic activity without causing the nut oils to react and are then reduced to a partially dehydrate state of 2% water. Nuts so prepared are dried without inducing rancidity producing reactions that normally occur when drying tannin-containing nuts and have less of a bitter taste associated with the tannins. Additionally, the nuts may be glazed to form a protective coating that inhibits oxidative reactions between the atmosphere and the nut, and which provides a convenient and tasty snack food.

  • Patent number: 6567649
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for reducing or eliminating the transmitter signal leakage, i.e., transmitter noise, in the receiver path of an RF communications system operating in full duplex mode. In an embodiment of the present invention, a noise cancellation loop produces an estimated transmitter signal leakage and cancels it from the receiver path to produce a received signal with little or no transmitter noise. Some of the advantages are that there is significant improvement in the isolation between the transmitter/receiver circuits, the size of the RF communications circuitry may be reduced, and the RF transmit module along with the RF receive module may be incorporated into a single RF IC chip.

  • Patent number: 6564304
Abstract: A memory processing system and method for accessing memory in a graphics processing system are disclosed in which memory accesses are reordered. A memory controller arbitrates memory access requests from a plurality of memory requesters (referred to as “masters”). Reads are grouped together and writes are grouped together to avoid mode switching. Instructions are reordered to minimize page switches. In one embodiment, reads are given priority and writes are deferred. The memory accesses come from different masters. Each master provides memory access requests into its own associated request queue. The master provides page break decisions and other optimization information in its own queue. The masters also notify the memory controller of their latency requirements. The memory controller uses the queue and page break decisions to reorder the requests from all queues for efficient page and bank access while considering latency requirements. A sort queue may be used to reorder the requests.
