  • Patent number: 6230669
Abstract: In a heat transfer system (10), an upper coolant chamber (31) and a lower coolant chamber (24) of a typical engine, such as an internal combustion engine, fuel cell, boiler, or other engine for converting fuel to thermal energy, are formed adjacent to the heat-rejecting components of the engine and are hermetically sealed to prevent exposure of heat-transfer liquid within the chambers to the engine's ambient atmosphere. The heat-transfer liquid is preferably a substantially anhydrous, boilable liquid having a saturation temperature higher than that of water, and the heat-transfer liquid is pumped at a predetermined flow rate, and distributed through the heat-transfer fluid chamber so that the liquid within the chambers substantially condenses the heat-transfer liquid vaporized by the heat-rejecting components of the engine.

  • Patent number: 6222437
Abstract: A blank formed from electrically conductive sheet material defines a continuous conductive path which includes two terminal ends and at least three loops disposed along the path. The blank is foldable at preselected folding locations on the path to position the loops in overlying relation to one another, and the blank is preferably formed with the loops disposed along the conductive path in substantially the same plane. The blank is used to form a multi-turn planar winding for a magnetic device such as, for example, an inductor or transformer which may be incorporated into electrical circuits such as power supplies. The planar magnetic device provides a low overall volume and profile, as well as a substantially higher volume or surface area of conductive material per turn of the winding compared to conventional wire or etched windings to provide a higher current carrying capacity and fewer turns compared to conventional windings.

  • Patent number: 6219613
Abstract: A vehicle position determination system for determining the position of a moving vehicle having a transponder includes a first and second antennas operable to receive periodic radio frequency data signals from the transponder when the transponder is moving through a first or second predetermined coverage zone, respectively. The first and second coverage zones partially overlap and each have a width that is orthogonal to the travel path of the moving vehicle and a length that is parallel to the travel path of the moving vehicle. A processor counts the number of periodic data signals received by each of the antennas from the transponder during a time period and determines based on the count a probable location of the vehicle. The vehicle location information can be provided to an imaging system to discriminate between transponder and non-transponder equipped vehicles.

  • Patent number: 6208050
Abstract: In a motor and bearing structure for a motor, a shaft is rotatably mounted on a fixed support, and a radially-extending rotor is connected to the shaft and rotatable therewith. A ball bearing assembly having an inner race, an outer race, and at least one ball bearing seated between the inner and outer races, is mounted between the shaft and the support for rotating the shaft and rotor relative to the support. A stator is radially spaced relative to the rotor, and fixedly mounted relative to the rotatable shaft and rotor. An approximately arc-shaped preload magnet is fixedly mounted on the support, and is axially spaced adjacent to the rotor to magnetically attract the rotor in the axial direction of the shaft and, in turn, apply a preload to the ball bearing assembly to prevent vibrations, wobbling or other rotational instability of the rotor. A ring-like, oil-impregnated bearing also rotatably supports the rotor and the shaft to further enhance the rotational stability of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 6201355
Abstract: The apparatus is a gas filled ultraviolet generating lamp for use as a liquid purifier. The lamp is powred by high voltage AC, but has no metallic electrodes within or in contact with the gas enclosure which is constructed as two concentric quartz cylinders sealed together at their ends with the gas fill between the cylinders. Cooling liquid is pumped through the volume inside the inner quartz cylinder where an electrically conductive pipe spaced from the inner cylinder is used to supply the cooling liquid and act as the high voltage electrode. The gas enclosure is enclosed within but spaced from a metal housing which is connected to operate as the ground electrode of the circuit and through which the treated fluid flows. Thus, the electrical circuit is from the central pipe, and through the cooling liquid, the gas enclosure, the treated liquid on the outside of the outer quartz cylinder, and to the housing.
