  • Patent number: 6755166
Abstract: The present invention provides a means to reduce holding current and driving current of EMVD's effectively and practically and to provide soft landing of a valve. The invention incorporates a nonlinear mechanical transformer as part of an EMVD system. The nonlinear mechanical transformer is designed for the spring and the inertia in the EMVD to have desirable nonlinear characteristics. With the presently disclosed invention, the holding current and driving current are reduced and soft valve landing is achieved. The nonlinear characteristics of a nonlinear mechanical transformer can be implemented in various ways. The concept of the invention can be applied not only to EMVD's but also to general reciprocating and bi-stable servomechanical systems, where smooth acceleration, soft landing, and small power consumption are desired.

  • Patent number: 6748312
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, an adaptive cruise control system includes a radio frequency (RF) transmit receive (TR) sensor module (or more simply “sensor”) disposed such that a detection zone is deployed in front of a vehicle. The sensor includes a sensor antenna system which comprises a transmit antenna for emitting or transmitting an RF signal and a receive antenna for receiving portions of the transmitted RF signal which are intercepted by one or more objects within a field of view of the transmit antenna and reflected back toward the receive antenna. With this particular arrangement, a detection system that detects objects in a region about a front of a vehicle is provided. If the system determines that the vehicle is approaching an object or that an object is approaching the vehicle, then the sensor initiates steps that are carried out in accordance with a set of rules that control an accelerator of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6728205
Abstract: A Bi-directional Link Self-healing Network (BLSN) for implementing bi-directional link automatic protection switching (APS) for an arbitrary edge or node redundant network and a technique for implementing APS recovery in response to an edge or node failure in a network is described. The BLSN technique does not require permanent allocation of spare capacity for each connection and allows sharing of capacity among many network connections by allocating capacity for use only in the event of a failure. The described technique allows loopback protection to be performed over node or edge redundant networks and operates such that the remains connected after the failure of a node or an edge in the network. The technique makes use of connected directed subgraphs of the network. Also described are techniques for generating the directed subgraphs on node and edge redundant networks having an arbitrary network topology.
