Abstract: The invention defines a propulsion system for an underwater vehicle. More particularly, the invention describes a turbo-hydroduct propulsion system which operates on stored, high energy fuel. The fuel is combusted and powers a turbopump which pressurizes ingested water to a very high pressure. The pressurized water is subsequently exhausted from the vehicle to produce thrust.
Abstract: The invention discloses a dynamoelectric machine having a two piece split-stator for assembly about a shaft mounted rotor. The dynamoelectric machine may readily be incorporated into the design of a device having a rotating shaft such as a jet engine to provide electrical output power.
Abstract: An air cycle machine for use within an Environmental Control System (ECS) operating in conjunction with a turbine engine. The air cycle machine includes two turbines commonly mounted on a shaft with a compressor. The air cycle machine is designed to directly receive high temperature, high pressure bleed air from the turbine engine and maximize energy extraction and utilization of the bleed air.
Abstract: An annular recuperator for use with a combustion power plant and in particular with a turbine engine. The annular recuperator is constructed from a plurality of stacked formed plates alternately sandwiching radially aligned exhaust passageways with partially radially, partially circumferentially aligned air passageways, in heat exchange relationship. The air passageways containing generally Z shaped finned passageways interconnecting axially aligned inlet and outlet manifolds within the annular core.
Abstract: A dynamoelectric machine having a superconducting magnet rotor and a method of magnetizing the superconducting magnet rotor. The superconducting magnet rotor provides a very strong magnetic field, potentially exceeding the field strength of high energy product permanent magnets.
Abstract: This invention relates to transducers for indicating position. In particular, this invention relates to circuitry for accurately measuring either rotary or linear displacement of an inductive coupling member within a voltage displacement transformer (LVDT or RVDT).

Abstract: A magnetic domain strain gage and method of digitally measuring strain or fatigue within a ferromagnetic material by measuring the time required for an increasing magnetizing force to cause magnetic domains to flip orientation in a ferromagnetic material as a function of strain or stress within the material. The magnetic domain's maximum rate of flip is measured as a time differential by a high frequency digital oscillator which provides a digital signal indicative of the strain thereby providing increased compatibility with digital data acquisition systems and having a superior signal to noise ratio in comparison with present low signal level analog resistance strain gages.
Abstract: A fuseable torsion shaft for use within an aircraft flight control surface actuation system. The fuseable torsion shaft includes a shear tube which exhibits high strength elastic characteristics during normal operation up to a predetermined shear torque level. Thereafter, a torsion shaft having lower strength plastic characteristics provides torque transmission capability for a limited deflection.
Abstract: An advanced Environmental Control System (ECS) for use in conjunction with a turbine engine to provide conditioned, pressurized air to an enclosed space such as an aircraft cabin, as well as cooling capacity for the aircraft avionics. The ECS features a dual turbine air cycle machine to minimize the amount of bleed air or power required from the turbine engine.

Abstract: A double clutch mechanism is disclosed for use within a starter assembly for selectively coupling power to start a turbine engine. The invention includes a primary engagement assembly and a secondary engagement assembly, either of which may be of the pawl and ratchet type or the sprag type, for coupling power to the engine and preventing overrunning of the starter assembly.
Abstract: A monolithic solid oxide fuel cell of the type characterized by a plurality of fuel and oxidant passageways extending through the core of the fuel cell. The fuel cell is constructed only of anode, cathode, electroylte and interconnect materials. The cell is constructed using multilayer tapes formed by first roll milling four individual tapes of cathode, electrolyte, anode, and interconnect material, and then roll milling the multilayer tape from the four tapes of a single material. Passageways are formed within the cathode and anode layers by roll milling elongated organic fibers into the tapes and burning out the fibers during the binder removal, sintering process. A manufacturing process is also disclosed.

Abstract: A hydrodynamic process or gas bearing is disclosed which includes an integral thrust disk defining a plurality of foil elements, the radially outer edge of the disk being displaced from the major bearing surface to form a circumferential step having a varying height profile. The integral thrust disk may in the alternative or in addition, include a plurality of radially outwardly extending tabs to locally increase the flexural rigidity of the disk.
