Abstract: A torque coupling device of the synchronous reluctance type having a magnetic flux generating device and concentric rotors, each rotor having a sleeve of diamagnetic material including a plurality of flux windows, the diamagnetic sleeves on the two rotors cooperating to provide a reluctance gradient within a magnetic circuit, thereby variably magnetically linking the two rotors.
Abstract: A non-jamming rotary mechanical actuator for aircraft control surfaces includes a pair of fixed ring gears separated by a moving ring gear. An end plate having a central bore therethrough and a bearing member for rotatably supporting a shaft is mounted at each outer side of said pair of fixed ring gears. Each ring gear has an internal gear surface. The shaft includes an integral inner cam member having a first offset and an outer cam member having a second offset. In driving relationship with said outer cam member is a compound gear having three sets of gear teeth for intermittent contact with said internal gear surfaces of the three ring gears. When a shear member located between the two cam members is broken due to torque overload, the cam members rotate relative to each other so that the compound gear loses contact with the ring gears, thus preventing jamming.
Abstract: A stator for use with a permanent magnet rotor electrical machine is disclosed which stator eliminates ferromagnetic teeth previously used in stator cores. The stator of the present invention uses a winding support structure made of non-magnetizable, non-conductive material to support the stator windings, which may advantageously be prewound prior to installation on the winding support structure. The stator is easily adaptable to liquid cooling, and has substantially reduced losses due to its toothless design.
Abstract: A monolithic solid oxide fuel cell of the type characterized by a plurality of fuel and oxidant passageways extending through the core of the fuel cell. The fuel cell is constructed only of anode, cathode, electrolyte and interconnect materials and is formed with integral manifolding for parallel flow through the core. The cell is constructed using alternatively stacked electrolyte walls and interconnect walls which are themselves multilayer tapes formed by roll milling individual tapes of a desired material, and then roll milling the multilayer tape from the tapes of a single material. A manufacturing process is also disclosed.
Abstract: An aircraft emergency power unit having a high pressure air storage tank, an aviation fuel storage tank, and a combustor which combusts pressurized air and aviation fuel in a stochiometrically fuel rich ratio to produce a motive combustion gas.

Abstract: A method of forming an underspring for a foil thrust bearing from a uniform thickness sheet. The underspring is formed by chemically etching a plurality of slots in the disk and then stamping the tabs formed by the slots.
Abstract: A circuit is disclosed which provides power isolation between the initializing and driven circuit, allowing the logic of a wide pulse width signal to be effectively transmitted across pulse transformers and faithfully reproduced.
Abstract: A roller for use in the cargo bay of an aircraft is disclosed which is constructed with chopped fiber strands incorporated into the rubber and oriented in a substantially circumferential direction around the hub of the roller to provide reinforcement to the rubber portion of the roller.
Abstract: A two pole permanent magnet rotor which utilizes a single cylindrical two pole permanent magnet mounted between two end pieces and surrounded by a retaining hoop. The cylindrical two pole permanent magnet, which is made of high energy product material, is "straight through" diametrically magnetized to provide a sinusoidal air gap flux distribution which eliminates losses due to harmonics. The cylindrical two pole permanent magnet may be made of a plurality of smaller magnet blocks which are stacked and machined to form cylindrical configuration.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting the output of a polyphase AC machine into a DC current by capacitor assisted line commutation within the rectifying circuitry.
