  • Patent number: 5235615
Abstract: A method for establishing and communicating synchronous, code division multiple access communications between a base station and a plurality of remote units. A plurality of remote-communications signals which have spread-spectrum modulation are transmitted from the plurality of remote units and arrive simultaneously at the base station. The method includes transmitting repetitively from the base station a access signal having spread-spectrum modulation and receiving the access signal at an accessing-remote unit. The accessing-remote unit transmits an echo signal which has spread-spectrum modulation. The echo signal is received at the base station and a time delay is measured between the access signal and the received echo signal. A protocol signal which has spread-spectrum modulation is transmitted to the accessing-remote unit, with the protocol signal communicating a chip codeword and the time delay measured at the base station.

  • Patent number: 5228119
Abstract: A method and system for displaying a function in two dimensions where the function is made up of numerous independent variables and at least one dependent variable. A new independent variable value can be defined having values which correspond to the multiple dependent variables. The variable values are read into a computer and the independent variables are then ranked by the user from fastest- to slowest-running variable. Each dependent variable corresponding to the new independent variable is plotted along the Y-axis. The independent variable values are plotted along the X-axis in a hierarchical manner. The hierarchical manner involves a nesting of fastest-running variables within slower-running variables. Rectangles are then drawn to correspond to each variable value. Each rectangle horizontally encloses the faster-running variables associated with it.

  • Patent number: 5224120
Abstract: A dynamic capacity allocation spread spectrum CDMA communications system for overlaying, at least in part, geographically and in frequency a radio-relay system. A first receiver, located near the relay receiver of the radio-relay system, measures a first power level within the relay bandwidth of the radio-relay system. A second receiver, located near the relay receiver, measures a second power level outside the relay bandwidth of the radio-relay system. The first power level is compared to a predetermined threshold. A ratio signal is generated from the first power level and the second power level. When the first power level exceeds the predetermined threshold, the ratio signal is used to regulate the power level and dynamically allocate the capacity transmitted from each spread-spectrum-base station.

  • Patent number: 5189416
Abstract: A chordal keyboard method and apparatus for generating a key code using a plurality of keys coupled to a controller with a first set of registers and a second set of registers. A user depresses at least one of the plurality of keys. The controller detects, which of the plurality of keys are in a depressed position and which of the plurality of keys are released from the depressed position. The controller sets in the first set of registers and sets in the second set of registers, bit locations of respective depressed keys, and clears in the second set of registers bit locations of respective released keys. When the controller detects that all of the plurality of keys are in a released position, a key code is generated which corresponds to bit locations set in the first set of registers. After generating the key code, the controller clears the first set of registers.

  • Patent number: 5164958
Abstract: A method for handling off a transitioning-remote unit from a first microcell having a first base station communicating with a first plurality of remote units, to a second microcell having a second base station communicating with a second plurality of remote units. The first base station communicates to the first plurality of remote units using synchronous, code division multiple access at a first carrier frequency and a first power level. The second base station communicates simultaneously to the second plurality of remote units using synchronous, code division multiple access at a second carrier frequency and a second power level. The second power level is typically greater than the first power level. While the transitioning-remote unit transitions from first microcell to the second microcell, the second base station detects a power level of the remote-communications signal, exceeding a predetermined threshold, transmitted from the transitioning-mobile unit.
