Abstract: The present invention provides a veterinary treatment method for animals suffering from a high arousal state. The treatment employs a class of pharmacologically active compounds having a pyrimidinyl-piperazine ring structure of which the most preferred member is buspirone. These compounds are administered to a variety of different domestic animals and household pets exhibiting behavioral problems which often are refractory to other modes of treatment.
Abstract: The present invention provides unique prepared immunogens, site-specific polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies against the DNA-binding domain of estrogen receptor protein, and immunoassay to determine the functional status of estrogen receptors in a cellular sample. Collectively or individually the component parts of the invention provide the ability not only to identify accurately the presence of human estrogen receptor but also the capability of determining whether the estrogen receptor exists in a functional or non-functional state.
Abstract: The present invention provides a closed, fluid-modulating receiving system for the conveyance, modulation, and collection of fluid matter from its source. The receiving system may be employed under both in vivo and inanimate use conditions for the collection and disposal of fluids which may be infectious, hazardous, or toxic in and of themselves.
Abstract: The present invention provides a unique fiber optic sensor which is able to provide a visual examination of a sample and its surrounding environment concurrent with the ability to conduct chemical sensing and detection of at least one ligand of interest. The present invention also provides apparatus for making precise optical determinations and measurements for the ligand of interest which can be correlated with specific parameter or other ligands for specific applications and purposes.
Abstract: The present invention provides a garment to be worn externally on the female person and a method for positioning and securing a radiotherapeutic appliance internally within the female genital organs during local radiation therapy. The garment provides at least one supporting band of material to be worn around the female body and provides access on-demand to the vulva of the person. The garment also provides at least one extensible member for positioning and securing the radiotherapeutic appliance such that the appliance is maintained in position and secured against movement during the radiation therapy.
Abstract: The present invention provides a methodology for forming an electrically conductive contact on the external surface of superconductive materials. The methodology is employed using any Noble metal to form the conductive contact; and is used with any superconductive material conventionally known. The resulting conductive contact provides a low electrical resistance and firm point of electrical junction for the superconductor with any conductive material in any electrical circuit or use.

Abstract: A laser treatment method is provided which removes pigment containing lesions, both normal and abnormal medically, from the skin of a living human. The methodology comprises a carefully controlled irradiation of the chosen treatment site on the skin of a living human; avoids the creation of cosmetically disfiguring scars; and eliminates the typical hypopigmentation as well as the pitting and other changes in skin texture normally accompanying conventionally known laser treatment techniques.

The receiving system may be employed under both in vivo and inanimate use conditions for the collection and disposal of fluids which may be infectious, hazardous, or toxic in and of themselves.
Abstract: Unique methods for treating interleukin-mediated edemas in living subjects are provided comprising administering an effective amount of a composition selected from the group consisting of phallotoxins, phallotoxin analogues, antamanide, or an antamanide analogue to the subject. The methods offer prophylactic and therapeutic modes of treatment for both localized and systemic interleukin-mediated edemas. The compositions of choice may be applied topically or given parenterally; and may be employed with other diverse agents for treatment of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory edemas.
Abstract: The present invention provides a one-piece, open-seam garment which encompasses the head, covers and conforms to the body and limbs of the wearer, and provides on-demand access to one portion of the covered body and limbs without uncovering the remainder of the body and legs. When worn, the garment provides privacy and protection for the person unlike the conventionally used johnnies and hospital gowns conventionally worn during physical examination or medical treatment in the physician's office or clinic.

Abstract: The present invention provides a chemical class of active compounds to be used as efficacious drugs in the treatment of sickle cell disease. The active compounds include imidazole derivatives, nitroimidazole derivatives, and triazole derivatives. These compounds are to be administered by any preferred route of administration including oral, intramuscular, intravenous, and any other parenteral route. If desired, these drugs may also be administered transmucosally, or subcutaneously, or using a dermal patch on the skin. In addition, the methodology is effective for both long term and short term therapy; may be employed prophylactically and/or therapeutically; and may be used in emergency, acute crisis clinical situations.
Abstract: A variety of conjugated compositions and methods for the detection of an analyte of interest in a fluid sample is provided which relies upon an intramolecular energy transfer between a conjugated fluorophore and a chromophoric light-absorbing ligand for qualitative and quantitative results. The detection methods preferably employ fiber optic sensors in combination with analyte-insensitive fluorophores and analyte-sensitive absorber ligands in conjugated form. The methods and compositions rely upon the ability of the absorbing ligands to absorb energy which is transferred non-radiatively by the fluorophore when in an excited state.
Abstract: An improved fiber optic sensor, sensing apparatus, and methods for making optical detections are provided. The fiber optic sensor employs a fiber optic strand to convey light energy, an immobilized polymeric reaction matrix, and at least one controlled release polymeric carrier within said reaction matrix comprising a controlled release polymer material and a releasable reagent formulation able to react with the analyte of interest. The optic sensors and sensor construction have been demonstrated to be both functionally useful and long serving in duration.
Abstract: The present invention provides a unique fiber optic sensor which is able to conduct multiple assays and analyses concurrently using a plurality of different dyes immobilized at individual spatial positions on the surface of the sensor. The present invention also provides apparatus for making precise optical determinations and measurements for multiple analytes of interest concurrently and provides methods of detection for multiple analytes of interest which can be correlated with specific parameters or other ligands for specific applications and purposes.
Abstract: The present invention provides fiber optic sensors, apparatus, methods of optical detection, and methods of sensor manufacture for detection of organic analytes having a fixed polarity. The sensor requires an optical fiber strand; an immobilized polarity-sensitive dye; and an immobilized polymeric material which not only contains the polarity-sensitive dye but also absorbs and partitions the organic analyte of interest.

Abstract: The present invention provides a therapeutic methodology for the treatment of chronic pain from its earliest stages to the most severe and intractable stage in a living subject. The therapeutic methodology is able to provide substantial pain relief over long time duration to patients afflicted with chronic pain; and relief from chronic pain and improvement of all symptoms coincidental with chronic pain begins immediately upon treatment. The therapeutic procedure must be performed by a properly trained medical practitioner or clinician within the confines of a hospital setting. Nevertheless, the therapeutic method provides pain relief for chronic pain sufferers, especially those persons who have been unable to obtain relief from chronic pain despite drastic medication and other pain relief techniques.
Abstract: A variety of methods and apparatus for the detection of an analyte of interest in a fluid sample is provided which relies upon the interaction of a fluorophore and a chromophoric light absorbing compound for qualitative and quantitative results. The methods preferably employ fiber optic sensors in combination with fluorophores and/or proto-absorber substances in mobile and immobilized modes of use. The methods and apparatus rely upon the ability of the light absorbing compositions to absorb energy which is transferred either radiatively or non-radiatively by the fluorophore when in an excited state.
