  • Patent number: 5268998
Abstract: A system which enables the user to visualize directly an object in 3-D Lobachevskian, 4-D Euclidean, or other geometries. The system includes an input device (10), a transducer (11), a processing device (11), and an output device (12). The transducer (11) determines incident angles of light rays from each object point with respect to the coordinate axes of the system eye, employing geometric relationships to the alternative geometry. Then, using those incident angles, it defines new rays which produce an image constituting a direct representation on the human retina of the original object in the space of the alternative geometry. The processing device (11) them assembles the image points and delivers them to an output device (12) to be viewed by the user.

  • Patent number: 5263700
Abstract: Apparatus for feeding flexible sheets singly from the top of a stack of sheets comprises a pick-up device which includes a gas deflector and gas supplying holes for directing a stream of gas at the topmost sheet on the stack to cause the sheet to separate from the stack. One of the gas supplying holes also directs a further gas stream at the gas deflector, with this further gas stream attaching itself to the gas deflector by the Coanda effect and entraining the topmost sheet into contact with the gas deflector.

  • Patent number: 5259394
Abstract: An endocardiac lead of the type including a conductive spiral winding 2 placed inside a sheath 1 made of a flexible material being insensitive to body fluids. This spiral winding 2 is electrically connected to an electrode 3 intended for being brought into contact with the inner wall of the heart. The electrode 3 is hollow and accommodates along its centerline a deformable helix 6 intended for fastening the lead into the heart muscle. The inner diameter of the electrode 3 is smaller than the outer diameter of the undeformed helix 6. The helix 6 presents a sufficient longitudinal elasticity modulus for being retractable inside the electrode 3 with a mechanical deformation, while the helix will substantially recover its initial shape during its extraction out of the electrode and secure the electrode to the tissue. The helix 6 may be made of a nickel-titanium based alloy.

  • Patent number: 5256250
Abstract: In a thin film evaporator for the evaporation of solutions, colloids, suspensions, or the like, to concentrates, which has a heatable cylindrical evaporator casing coupled with a rotary drive, which evaporator casing has a feed inlet at one end, in the form of a feed distributor that runs on bearings and is coupled with a rotary drive, and at the other end has a concentrate discharge, the axis of the evaporator casing is arranged horizontally. The distal end of the feed distributor can reach the inside surface of the evaporator casing to within less than 2 cm. Wiper elements can work together with the effective surface of the evaporator casing. This thin film evaporator makes possible an optimal setting of the retention time of the process material to be treated in the evaporator casing and has the effect that the thickness of the layer of the process material changes very little over the entire axial length.

  • Patent number: 5255673
Abstract: An inflatable pressure vessel (1), which may be a decompression chamber for treating divers, has a flexible elongate casing (2) made of a silicone elastomer material reinforced with windings of reinforcing filaments and one or more removable end members (7,8) to provide access. An end member may be a rigid plate which seals against a frame (3,4) defining the entrance under internal vessel pressure. A transparent plastic plate gives illumination and allows inspection of a diver under treatment in a decompression chamber. Two pressure vessels (31,32) may be connected by a linking element (24) comprising a male part (25) which seals within a female part (33,34) under internal pressure and which has inter-engaging projections (29,35) and depressions (30,36) to prevent the parts from sliding apart axially under that pressure.

  • Patent number: 5249572
Abstract: Controlling a cardiac pacemaker wherein the cardiac pacing rate is controlled according to a measure of the metabolic demand. The average minute ventilation MV-8-0 is measured over the eight last breathing cycles (first one to eighth one), and it is compared with the average minute ventilation MV-8-1 over the previous eight breathing cycles (ninth one to sixteenth one), and it is determined that an effort phase is present when MV-8-0>MV-8-1, and that a recovery phase is present when MV-8-0<MV-8-1. These determinations are used to determine whether sensed changes in the ventilation correspond to transitions between the effort and recovery or ventilation gaps or artifacts so that the cardiac pacing rate is not decreased during an effort.

  • Patent number: 5250186
Abstract: A high angle light scattering detector using classical Rayleigh scattering. A high intensity arc light source, filtered to leave only one wavelength illuminates a flow cell. Through the flow cell, very small particles such as biological proteins flow in solution after separation by HPLC or some other means. A UV detector generates data regarding the weight concentration of the eluting particles and a scattered light detector collecting scattered light at angles of approximately 90.degree. generates a scattered light signal. The incident light intensity is also measured. The average molecular weight is then computed using the scattered and incident light data, the weight concentration data and a simplified mathematical relationship from which the size factor P and the viral coefficients have been eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5251284
Abstract: An optimal parametric signal processor, which receives autocorrelation coefficients, provides lattice coefficients in an optimal manner, and allows the use of any number of available parallel processing units. The signal processor may be implemented in a fully parallel or fully sequential manner, or in a "parallel-partitioned" implementation which provides the benefits of parallel processing, manageable hardware complexity, and optimal signal processing for a given number of available processors. By using a "lattice basic cell" structure, hardware complexity is minimized.
