Patent number: 4773916Abstract: The octane requirement increase phenomenon in a spark ignition internal combustion engine is controlled by introducing with the combustion charge a fuel composition containing an octane requirement increase-inhibiting amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of fused aromatics having at least 2, preferably between 3 and 5, aromatic rings with no heteroatoms substituted in the rings. The polynuclear aromatics can be either unsubstituted or substituted with groups other than an alkyl group. Usually the polynuclear aromatic is added to the fuel in an amount between about 0.1 and 5.0 weight percent of the fuel. In particular, anthracene and phenanthrene, and their non-alkyl derivatives, provide effective octane requirement increase-inhibiting additives for unleaded gasoline.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventors: Michael C. Patent number: 4767734Abstract: A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst useful for converting hydrocarbon feeds to midbarrel products is prepared by calcining a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having cracking activity in the presence of added steam at a water vapor partial pressure greater than about 2.0 p.s.i.a. under conditions such that the unit cell size of the zeolite is reduced to a value between about 24.32 and about 25.45 Angstroms while the water vapor sorptive capacity of the zeolite is decreased to a value between about 5 and about 15 weight percent of the zeolite at 25.degree. C. and a p/p.degree. value of 0.10. The moderately stream calcined zeolite is mixed with a porous, inorganic refractory oxide component and the resultant mixture is extruded to form particles which are broken into extrudates normally ranging in length between 1/16 and 1/2 inch. The extruded particles are then calcined in the presence of added steam at a water vapor partial pressure greater than about 2.0 p.s.i.a.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1985Date of Patent: August 30, 1988Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventor: John W. Patent number: 4762813Abstract: A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst useful for converting hydrocarbon feeds to midbarrel products is prepared by extruding a mixture of a porous, inorganic refractory oxide component and a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having cracking activity to form extrudates which are broken into particles normally ranging in length between 1/16 and 1/2 inch. The extruded particles are then calcined in the presence of added steam at a water vapor partial pressure greater than about 2.0 p.s.i.a., preferably greater than about 5.0 p.s.i.a.
